News & Peace: How Do We Find Peace When the World Feels on Fire?

The headlines are heavy, the smoke is literal for some and metaphorical for others, and the weight of a world in crisis can feel like it’s pressing the very air from our lungs.
How can a Christian maintain inner peace when global crises, climate anxiety, and political tensions feel overwhelming?
True peace is found not in the absence of trouble, but in the presence of Jesus Christ. By grounding our identity in Scripture, limiting digital "doomscrolling," and engaging in life-giving community, we can experience a "peace that surpasses understanding" even when the world feels on fire.
The Weight of the Headlines: July 2026
As we look at the news today, July 25, 2026, the world feels particularly fragile. In Europe, the massive wildfires sweeping across France and Spain have forced over 200,000 people from their homes. The images of orange skies and scorched earth are more than just news, they are a source of profound "climate grief" for millions.
Closer to home, the rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran have reignited fears of global instability. For Gen Z and young families, this isn't just "the news", it’s the backdrop of their lives. When you combine ecological disaster with the threat of international conflict, it’s no wonder that mental health statistics are reaching a breaking point.
But as followers of Jesus, we are called to a different response. We aren't called to ignore the fire, but we are called to know the One who walks through it with us.

Understanding the Terms of Peace
To find our way forward, we need to clarify what we mean when we talk about faith in a crisis. Here are a few "Definition Blocks" to help anchor our conversation:
Term | Biblical Meaning |
Peace (Shalom) | Not just the absence of war, but a state of wholeness, safety, and prosperity in God’s presence. |
Repentance | A change of mind and direction; turning away from fear or self-reliance and turning toward God’s sovereignty. |
Sanctification | The lifelong process where the Holy Spirit makes us more like Jesus, helping us respond to crisis with grace rather than panic. |
Divine Healing | God's power to restore not just the physical body, but the mind and the spirit from the trauma of global anxiety. |
Why "Climate Anxiety" is Real (and Valid)
If you find yourself staring at your phone, feeling a pit in your stomach as you read about the 2026 wildfires, you aren't "weak in faith." You are human. Climate anxiety is the persistent fear of environmental doom, and for many in the 901 and around the world, it feels like the future is being stolen.
The Bible doesn't tell us to be stoic or unfeeling. In fact, the Psalms are full of "lament", the holy act of crying out to God when things are broken. We can lament the loss of forests in France and the instability in the Middle East. God is big enough for your questions and your fears.
The Biblical Anchor: Walking Through the Fire
There are three specific promises that serve as our "fireproofing" when the world feels like it’s burning.
1. The Promise of Presence (Isaiah 43:2)
God told His people, "When you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you." Notice He didn't say we wouldn't have to walk through the fire. He promised that the fire wouldn't have the final word because He is in it with us.
2. The Command to Guard (Philippians 4:6-7)
We are told to "not be anxious about anything." This isn't a suggestion; it’s a pathway to protection. When we bring our specific fears, about the environment, about war, about our children’s future, to God in prayer, He stands like a sentry at the door of our hearts.
3. The Reality of Victory (John 16:33)
Jesus was incredibly honest. He said, "In the world you will have tribulation." He didn't sugarcoat the human experience. But He followed it with the ultimate zinger: "But take heart; I have overcome the world." The fires of 2026 are temporary; His victory is eternal.

Practical Steps: How to Reclaim Your Peace Today
Knowing the Truth is the foundation, but practicing the Truth is how we survive the week. Here is a practical "Top-List" for navigating global crisis:
Audit Your Inputs: If your news alerts are causing heart palpitations, turn them off. Give yourself a "Digital Sabbath." You cannot carry the weight of the whole world; only Jesus can do that.
Focus on "Local Hope": While you can't personally extinguish a fire in Spain, you can serve a neighbor in Memphis or Bartlett. Action is the enemy of anxiety.
Pray the Headlines: Instead of just reading a headline and worrying, turn it into a ten-second prayer. "Lord, be with the families in France." "Lord, give wisdom to the diplomats."
Stay in Community: Crisis thrives in isolation. Whether it’s at First Assembly Memphis or through our Boundless Online community, don't process your fear alone.
