News & Peace: Looking for Peace in the 901? Here Are 10 Practical Ways to Find Rest Amidst Global Chaos

Finding peace in a chaotic world requires anchoring your soul in the unchanging presence of Christ through prayer, community, and intentional rest. Amidst global uncertainty, you can experience quietness and confidence by shifting your focus from the headlines to the Heart of God.

The Weight of the World in the 901

It is no secret that the world feels heavier than it did even a year ago. As we navigate the summer of 2026, the headlines are filled with a relentless cycle of global conflict, economic shifts, and the rapid rise of technology that often leaves us feeling more disconnected than ever. Whether it is political instability abroad or the local stressors right here in Memphis and the greater 901 area, the "noise" of the world is at an all-time high.

According to recent global health data, nearly 1 in 5 people living in areas impacted by conflict or high social instability will experience a significant mental health disorder. Even if you aren't on the front lines, the phenomenon of "continuous traumatic stress", the feeling that a threat is always around the corner, can take a massive toll on your spiritual and emotional well-being.

As a Spirit-filled community at First Assembly Memphis and our global family at Boundless Online Church, we believe that peace isn’t the absence of trouble; it is the presence of a Person. That Person is Jesus Christ, and His Spirit is the Comforter promised to us for times exactly like these.

10 Practical Ways to Find Peace Today

If you are feeling overwhelmed, you aren't alone. Here are ten practical, biblically-grounded steps you can take today to reclaim your peace.

1. Practice a "Digital Fast"

The constant pings of news alerts and social media updates keep our nervous systems in a state of high alert. Try silencing your phone for one hour each morning and evening. Use that time to talk to God instead of listening to the world.

2. Anchor Your Day in Scripture

Before you check the news, check the Word. Start your day with a Psalm of trust (like Psalm 91 or Psalm 23). When we fill our minds with God’s promises first, the world’s problems find their proper perspective. If you need a starting point, check out our guide on how to quiet your anxiety each morning.

3. Breathe Through Prayer

The Holy Spirit is often compared to "breath." When anxiety spikes, take a moment to breathe deeply and pray a simple "breath prayer," such as: "Lord Jesus, You are my peace," or "Holy Spirit, I trust You." This physical and spiritual practice helps regulate your body and spirit simultaneously.

4. Find Your "901" Community

Isolation is the enemy of peace. Whether it's a small group in Cordova, a prayer meeting in Bartlett, or a digital small group via Boundless, being with others who love Jesus reminds you that you aren't carrying the weight of the world alone.

5. Prioritize the Sabbath

God designed us for a rhythm of work and rest. Set aside a 24-hour period each week where you stop "doing" and start "being." Sabbath isn't just about sleeping; it's about delighting in what God has provided.

6. Serve Someone Locally

Peace often comes when we shift our focus from our own fears to someone else’s needs. Volunteer at a local Memphis food pantry, check on a neighbor, or serve in a ministry at FA Memphis. Acting in love is a powerful antidote to fear.

7. Step Into Nature

God’s creation has a way of speaking peace to our souls. Take a walk through Shelby Farms or simply sit in your backyard. Romans 1:20 reminds us that God’s invisible qualities are seen in what He has made.

8. Engage in Audacious Worship

Put on a worship playlist and sing along, even if you don't feel like it. Worship shifts our gaze from the mountain of our problems to the Majesty of our God. At FA Memphis, we believe worship is a weapon against despair.

9. Practice Daily Gratitude

Each evening, write down three things you are grateful for. This simple habit retrains your brain to look for God’s goodness in the midst of global chaos.

10. Seek Professional Support

As an Assemblies of God-aligned community, we believe God works through both prayer and professional care. If your anxiety feels unmanageable, seeking a Christian counselor is a healthy, faith-filled step toward wholeness.

Peace is a Pathway, Not a Destination

In John 14:27, Jesus says, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

Notice that Jesus distinguishes His peace from the world's peace. The world’s peace depends on favorable circumstances, a good economy, political harmony, or personal health. But the peace of Jesus can exist right in the middle of a storm. It is a peace that "surpasses all understanding" (Philippians 4:7).

In the 901, we have a unique opportunity to be a "city on a hill." When we live with a peace that doesn't make sense to the world, people notice. They start to ask where that hope comes from. This is our witness: that even when the headlines are dark, the Light of the World is still shining.

Finding peace isn't a one-time event; it’s a daily decision to walk with the Holy Spirit. Whether you are walking through the doors of our campus in Memphis or joining us from the other side of the globe, we want to help you take that next step toward rest.
