News & Peace: Love Isn’t About Bowing Down

The humidity in Orlando this week is thick, but it’s nothing compared to the weight of the conversations happening inside the convention center. As thousands of messengers gather for the SBC annual meeting in Orlando, the air is filled with more than just the typical buzz of old friends reuniting. There is a sense that we are at a crossroads: a moment where the definition of cooperation and the foundation of truth are being weighed in the balance.

For many watching from home or scrolling through social media, the headlines feel heavy. The debate over women pastors and the proposed amendment on doctrinal clarity can feel like a clash of personalities or a battle of politics. But for those of us who love the church, it’s about something much deeper. It’s about whether we believe that love means bowing down to the pressures of the culture or standing firm on the design of the Creator.

The Tension of the Moment

Let’s be honest about why this feels so difficult. We live in a world that tells us love is synonymous with total affirmation. If you don't adjust your beliefs to match the current trends, you’re often labeled as "unkind" or "exclusionary." This creates a deep internal pain for many Christians. You want to be welcoming. You want to be a bridge. You want to show the love of Jesus to a world that is desperately lonely and hurting.

But then you open the Scriptures. You see a design for leadership: specifically the role of the pastor/elder/overseer: that is rooted not in cultural capability, but in biblical order.

The "pain" many are feeling right now is the tension between wanting to be "nice" and wanting to be "faithful." It’s the fear that by holding to biblical orthodoxy, we might be closing doors to people who need the Gospel.

Truth and Unity: The Path Forward

At the SBC annual meeting in Orlando, a proposed amendment focused attention on doctrinal clarity and the meaning of friendly cooperation within the Southern Baptist Convention. The discussion centered on whether cooperating churches should share a clear understanding of the pastoral office and how that conviction should be expressed in convention life.

To some, this feels like an unnecessary fence. To others, it is a necessary foundation.

The truth is, unity cannot exist without truth. You can have a crowd without truth, but you cannot have a unified body without a shared foundation. True love for our neighbors: and for the women and men in our churches: includes being honest about God’s design for leadership.

When we bow down to cultural expectations in an attempt to be "more loving," we actually do a disservice to the people we are trying to reach. We offer them a version of faith that changes with the wind, rather than a solid rock they can build their lives upon.

1. Honesty is a form of love. Telling the truth about what Scripture says isn't an act of hate; it’s an act of stewardship. We love people enough to point them to God’s way, even when it’s not the popular way.

2. Biblical roles don't mean less value. In the Kingdom of God, your value is determined by the blood of Jesus, not your title. Women and men both play vital, indispensable roles in the mission of the church.

3. Orthodoxy leads to outreach. When we are clear about who we are and what we believe, we can be more effective in reaching those who are lost. Confusion never led anyone to Christ; clarity does.
