News & Peace: News Insight - A Pause in the Storm: When Peace Feels Possible

For the first time in nearly two weeks, the night sky over Iran remained quiet last night. After thirteen consecutive nights of U.S. airstrikes aimed at protecting shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, a sudden and welcome lull has settled over the region. While the world holds its breath, wondering if this is a temporary tactical reset or a genuine window for diplomacy, the Christian family has a unique opportunity to lead with a different kind of calm. We don't have to wait for the headlines to tell us when peace is possible; we know the Prince of Peace who stands outside the storm.

Now, a pause in conflict is always a reason to give thanks, but it is also a reminder of how fragile human "peace" can be. In the last twenty-four hours, the news cycle has been a whirlwind of tension: Houthi forces claimed a missile attack on Saudi Arabia, triggering a retaliatory strike on Hodeida. Oil prices have nudged above $100 a barrel, sending ripples of economic anxiety across the globe. Meanwhile, an Omani delegation has arrived in Tehran, and President Trump has noted that while talks continue, the U.S. remains "locked and loaded."

When the "water cooler" conversations turn to the cost of gas or the threat of global conflict, our role as parents and believers isn't to add to the noise. It’s to provide an anchor. Here is how we navigate this week’s headlines with a peacemaker’s posture and a heart stayed on Christ.

Finding Stillness in the Middle East Lull

The "peaceful night" reported by Tehran’s Health Ministry is a mercy. But even in this pause, the underlying tensions remain. The struggle for control over the Strait of Hormuz: a vital artery for one-fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas: is not just a geopolitical chess match; it is a source of profound fear for millions of people.

Think about it: when trade is threatened, everything from the price of the cereal on your breakfast table to the stability of your retirement fund feels vulnerable. It is easy to let that vulnerability turn into secular anxiety. But the Bible tells us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10)

When we see the Omani delegation seeking a diplomatic path in Tehran, we pray for them. We pray for the leaders in Washington, London, and the Gulf. We recognize that while man’s diplomacy is necessary, true security is not found in a Memorandum of Understanding or a London conference. It is found in the sovereignty of a God who "makes wars cease to the end of the earth" (Psalm 46:9).

The Groaning of Creation: Wildfires and War

Beyond the Middle East, the world feels heavy with the "groaning" of creation described in Romans 8. In France and Spain, more than 200,000 people have been forced from their homes as massive wildfires tear through the landscape. The evacuation of Bordeaux’s Cap Ferret peninsula is a stark reminder of how quickly life can be disrupted.

Simultaneously, the Russia-Ukraine war continues to claim lives, with 11 more reported dead in recent attacks. Whether it is the literal heat of a wildfire or the metaphorical fire of war, the human heart cries out for a safe place to hide.

As a 24/7 Church, we believe that God is available when life feels heavy. When we see the smoke from thousands of miles away or read the casualty reports from Eastern Europe, we aren't just consumers of news; we are intercessors. These events aren't just "content" for our feeds; they are calls to remember that our world is broken and in desperate need of the restoration only Christ provides.

Economic Anxiety and the Provider’s Promise

Closer to home for many, the announcement of new U.S. tariffs on the UK, EU, and dozens of trading partners adds another layer of complexity. Combined with oil prices hitting $100, the "economic storm" can feel just as threatening as a military one. Trade wars and tariffs often spark fear of scarcity, job loss, and rising costs.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you (John 14:27)

But here is where our faith becomes practical. Our identity is not tied to our national GDP or our personal net worth. We are citizens of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. When the world talks about trade wars, we talk about the Father who knows we need these things. We shift our focus from the fluctuation of the market to the faithfulness of the Maker.

5 Practical Ways to Lead Your Family Through News Anxiety

How do we help our children navigate these headlines? How do we keep our own hearts from hardening or becoming paralyzed by fear? Here are five steps you can take today:

  1. Filter the Feed: Don't let the news be the first thing you or your children consume in the morning. Start with the Word. Let Scripture set the tone before the headlines set the temperature.

  2. The One-Question Dinner: Ask your kids, "What was something you heard today that made you feel worried, and how can we ask God to help with that?" This normalizes talking about the news in a prayerful context.

  3. Practice Presence: When headlines feel "locked and loaded," remind your family that God is "present and loving." Use the Boundless Family Faith Library resources to find simple stories of God’s protection.

  4. Pray for the "Other": Intentionally pray for families in Tehran, Bordeaux, and Kyiv. This expands your child’s heart from self-protection to global compassion.

  5. Anchor in the Eternal: Remind your family that while tariffs change and oil prices fluctuate, the grace of Jesus Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Blessed are the peacemakers (Matthew 5:9)

A Peacemaker’s Posture

Being a peacemaker doesn't mean we ignore the news. It means we bring the light of the Gospel into the news. It means we respond to "locked and loaded" rhetoric with "kneeling and praying" humility. It means we look at a night without strikes not just as a tactical lull, but as a space where we can ask God to move in the hearts of kings and soldiers alike.

This weekend, as you sit around your kitchen table in Memphis or wherever you may be, remember that the same God who stilled the storm on Galilee is watching over the Strait of Hormuz and the forests of France. He is not surprised by the headlines, and He is not distant from your anxieties.

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You (Isaiah 26:3)

A Family Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus, we thank You for being our Prince of Peace. Today, we pray for the families in the Middle East, in Europe, and in our own neighborhoods who feel the weight of these uncertain times. We thank You for the pause in violence, and we ask that You would turn that pause into a lasting peace. Protect those fleeing fires, comfort those mourning in war, and give us wisdom to steward our resources in a shifting economy. Keep our hearts stayed on You, for You are our only true source of peace. Amen.
