News & Peace: When the World Feels Like It's Burning — Finding Refuge in Jesus

This week, Europe is burning.

It’s not just a headline or a figure of speech. As we move through June 2026, the continent is gripped by a record-shattering heatwave that feels less like a summer day and more like a refining fire. France recently recorded its hottest day in history: temperatures soaring past 43°C (over 109°F) in places like Châteaumeillant. The UK Met Office has issued rare Red Extreme Heat warnings, a "danger to life" signal that has sent a shiver of concern through even the most stoic communities.

Schools have shuttered their doors across multiple countries. Tens of thousands in western France have lost power, leaving families without the relief of fans or refrigeration. And most heartbreakingly, at least 40 drownings have been linked to people seeking desperate relief in rivers and lakes not meant for swimming.

It’s the kind of news that makes you stop and catch your breath. It’s the kind of heat that doesn't just stick to your skin; it settles in your spirit.

On top of the rising mercury, the global headlines remain heavy. We see the continued conflict in Lebanon, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and political turmoil simmering across the Middle East. Closer to home, right here in Memphis, the air is thick with more than just humidity. We are navigating school takeovers, local flooding, and community tensions that make the future feel uncertain.

It can feel like the world is groaning under the weight of it all.

And honestly? It is.

The Groaning of Creation

When we see the earth literally heating up and the nations in an uproar, we aren't just seeing weather patterns or political cycles. We are seeing the reality described in Romans 8:22: "For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now."

This "groaning" is a theological truth. It reminds us that the world as it currently exists is not the world as God intended it to be. The extreme heat, the flooding in the Mid-South, and the persistent roar of war are all reminders that creation is longing for restoration.

But here’s the beautiful tension of our faith—we don’t grieve without hope. We don’t face the heat without a shadow. We don’t fear the news cycle without a refuge. At Boundless Online Church, we believe in a "24/7 Church When Life Doesn’t Pause," because we know that when the world feels like it’s burning, you need more than a platitude—you need the presence of Jesus.

Where Do We Run When the Mountains Fall?

When the news feels heavy—whether it’s a heatwave across the Atlantic or a hard situation in your own kitchen—there is only one place that holds steady.

Psalm 46:1-2 gives us a blueprint for these moments: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea."

Notice the phrasing. It doesn't say "if" the earth gives way. It acknowledges that sometimes, the ground beneath us really does feel like it's shifting. The "mountains" of our security—our health, our power grids, our political stability—can feel like they are tumbling into the sea.

Yet, the Psalmist is emphatic: "Therefore we will not fear."

This isn't a bravado born of human strength. It’s a confidence born of divine proximity. God isn't just a refuge we have to travel to; He is an ever-present help. He is in the heat with us. He is in the flood with us. If you are looking for real life change, it begins by recognizing that your safety isn't found in a cooler climate or a better headline—it’s found in the person of Jesus Christ.

What Can We Do Today?

When the world feels unstable, our natural reaction is often to freeze or to panic. But as followers of Jesus, we are called to a different rhythm. We are called to be the peacemakers, the pray-ers, and the hands and feet of Christ.

Here are four practical ways to navigate this season of "heat" in the world:

1. Pray Specifically for the Vulnerable

Right now, families across Europe are struggling without power in extreme conditions. The elderly are at high risk, and parents are scrambling to keep children safe and hydrated.

  • Action: Take five minutes today to pray for the Church in Europe. Pray that Christians there would be a source of relief and that the Holy Spirit would provide supernatural protection over the most vulnerable.

2. Check Your Own Community

Extreme weather doesn’t just happen overseas. We’ve seen the impact of flash flooding in the Mid-South this week, and we know the Memphis summer is just beginning.

  • Action: Who is your "neighbor" today? Is there an elderly person on your block who needs a case of water? A family whose basement flooded? A ride to a cooling center? Our faith is most visible when it carries a cup of cold water (Matthew 10:42).

3. Anchor Your Family in Truth

The news cycle spins fast, and for children, the world can feel like a scary place when they hear adults talking about "the world burning."

  • Action: Turn off the screen for thirty minutes. Read a Psalm together at the dinner table. If you're struggling for family discipleship ideas, start with the basics—pray for the nations with your kids. Let them see you turn to Jesus when life feels wobbly.

4. Don't Lose Your Hope

Jesus was incredibly honest with us. He didn't promise a life without heatwaves or heartaches. In fact, He said, "In this world you will have trouble" (John 16:33). But He didn't stop there. He finished with the ultimate anchor: "But take heart! I have overcome the world."

  • Action: Whenever you feel the "heat" of anxiety rising, speak that promise out loud. You aren't serving a God who is surprised by the news. You are serving the Overcomer.

Understanding the "Refining Fire"

Sometimes, God allows the heat of the world to reveal the strength of our foundation. In our walk of faith, we often talk about the refining fire. This isn't a fire meant to consume us, but to purify us.

When the external world feels like it's on fire, it forces us to ask: What am I trusting in?

  • If we trust in the economy, we will be anxious when it dips.

  • If we trust in the weather, we will be frantic when it changes.

  • But if we trust in the Lord, we become like trees planted by the water, which do not fear when the heat comes (Jeremiah 17:8).

A Prayer for Today

Lord, the world feels hot and heavy right now. We lift up our brothers and sisters across Europe facing this brutal heatwave. Protect the vulnerable, strengthen those serving, and bring physical and spiritual relief. We pray for our own city of Memphis—for those recovering from flooding and those navigating local tensions. Protect our children’s hearts from fear. Be our refuge, Lord. When the news shakes us, anchor us in You. We trust that You hold the whole world—and our families—in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Stay safe out there, friends. Drink your water. Check on your neighbors. And rest in the God who never sweats—and never sleeps.
