News & Peace: Why Is Gen Z's Anxiety Driving Them Toward Revival?

What if the very thing you're ashamed of — the anxiety that keeps you up at night, the mental health struggle you don't talk about at church — is actually the thing God is using to draw a generation back to Him?

Yes. According to the latest Barna research, 42% of Gen Z say mental health challenges are driving them toward spiritual revival. Anxiety isn't just a struggle — for many young people, it's becoming a doorway to faith.

In February 2026, the Barna Group and Gloo released data that stopped many church leaders in their tracks. Gen Z — often called the most anxious generation in American history — is also the generation most likely to believe a spiritual revival is coming. Thirty-eight percent of Gen Z expect revival within the next year, the highest of any generation surveyed.

But here's the part that changes everything: 42% of Gen Z specifically name mental health challenges as a catalyst pushing them toward God. Thirty-five percent point to anxiety.

Think about what that means. The same generation drowning in doom-scrolling, comparison culture, and 24/7 news cycles is not just surviving — they're searching. They're not running from their pain. They're letting it lead them somewhere.

A 2026 Lifeway study found that Gen Z Protestant churchgoers now attend an average of 6.2 services per month — more than any other generation. They lead in sharing their faith, studying their Bibles, fasting, and inviting others to church. The same generation the internet wrote off as "lost" is showing up.

5 Ways Anxiety Can Become a Doorway to Faith

Life Takeaway

Your anxiety is not a disqualifier. It is not proof that your faith is weak. It may be the signal that you were made for more than this world can give. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27, ESV). His peace is still available right now.
