Anxiety can feel like a heavy fog rolling over the Mississippi River, blurring your vision and weighing down your heart until you feel like you can't breathe.
If you are struggling with anxiety, know that you are not alone, and there is a path to peace through the presence of Jesus Christ. By combining biblical truth, the power of the Holy Spirit, and supportive community, you can find lasting freedom from the grip of fear.
The Reality of Anxiety in our 901 Community
In Memphis, we are known for our soul, our grit, and our deep roots, but we are also a city facing significant mental health challenges. Recent data reveals that nearly 1 in 5 people in Memphis are living with a mental health condition, including generalized anxiety and depression. Across the state of Tennessee, approximately 31.3% of adults report symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorders.
If you feel like your "grit" has run out and you are simply surviving each day, please understand that anxiety is not a sign of a "weak faith." It is often a sign that the weight of the world has exceeded the human capacity to carry it alone. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that while anxiety is a real physiological and emotional battle, it is also a spiritual territory where God wants to bring His light.
Understanding the Roots: Sin, Grace, and the Human Condition
In our modern culture, anxiety is often treated only as a chemical imbalance. While medical science is a gift from God, we also recognize that we live in a fallen world where the presence of sin, both our own and the systemic brokenness of the world, creates a baseline of unrest.
However, the Gospel offers something better than just "management." It offers Grace.
Concept | Biblical Truth | The Result |
Sin | Romans 3:23 – Missing the mark of God's design. | Internal unrest and separation. |
Grace | Ephesians 2:8 – God’s unmerited favor and help. | Restoration and internal peace. |
The Spirit | John 14:27 – Peace that the world cannot give. | Strength to overcome fear. |
Repentance Definition Block: Repentance is more than just feeling sorry; it is a "change of mind" and a turning away from self-reliance to trust fully in God’s path. When we repent of trying to carry the world on our own shoulders, we find the freedom of His grace.
A Pentecostal Perspective on Peace
As an Assemblies of God-aligned community, we believe that God has provided a specific "Helper" for our times of trouble: the Holy Spirit. We don't just talk about peace; we believe you can experience it as a tangible presence.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, He promised His disciples that they would not be left as orphans. He sent the Holy Spirit to empower, comfort, and guide us. For many in Memphis, the "901 life" is fast-paced and stressful, but the Baptism in the Holy Spirit provides an internal reservoir of power that the world’s circumstances cannot drain.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit Definition Block: This is an experience following salvation where the believer is empowered by God for service and witness. It often includes an internal "settling" of the soul as the Spirit provides supernatural comfort and peace.
Sanctification Definition Block: The lifelong process of being set apart for God and growing into the likeness of Christ. As we walk through sanctification, the Holy Spirit helps us prune the anxious thoughts of the old life and cultivate the "fruit of the Spirit," which includes peace and self-control.
5 Practical Steps to Finding Peace Today
If you are currently in the middle of an anxiety attack or a season of heavy worry, here is a practical "faith-first" checklist:
Breathe and Name the Truth: Stop and acknowledge, "I am feeling anxious, but God is still on the throne." (Psalm 56:3)
Scripture Saturation: Don't just read the Bible; let it soak in. Memorize Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
The Power of Prayer: Whether you are in Cordova, Bartlett, or downtown Memphis, God hears you. Speak your fears out loud to Him.
Connect with Community: Anxiety thrives in isolation. Join a weekly group where you can be known and supported.
Seek Holy Spirit Empowerment: Ask God to fill you with His Spirit afresh. Sometimes we need a supernatural touch to break a natural cycle of fear.

A Story of a Memphis Miracle
We have seen lives transformed right here in the 901. We remember a local member who struggled for years with debilitating panic attacks that kept them from leaving their house. Through a combination of pastoral care, a small group that refused to let them go, and a powerful moment at the altar where they surrendered their fear to Jesus, they found a "peace that surpasses all understanding." Today, they serve in our recreational sports ministries, helping others find the same joy they once thought was lost forever.
