Prayer & Hope: Why Does God Allow Suffering? — When Pain Doesn't Make Sense

God allows suffering not because He is indifferent, but because we live in a fallen world where free will and spiritual brokenness exist. While pain is never His primary desire, He promises to be intimately present in our tears, using even the darkest trials to produce ultimate good and eternal character.

This article explores the theological and pastoral heart of the most difficult question in faith: how a good God can exist alongside real pain. We will look at Scripture, finding God’s nearness in the valley and discovering how He redeems what was meant for harm.

The Question That Echoes Through Every Heart

If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why do bad things happen? It is the question that keeps people from faith, keeps believers awake at night, and often feels like a wall between us and the peace we crave. Whether it is a sudden loss, a chronic illness, or a global tragedy, suffering feels like an intrusion: because, in a very real sense, it is. We were created for a garden, not a graveyard. We were designed for connection, not isolation. When we experience pain, our souls are crying out against the brokenness of a world that is not yet fully restored.

At Boundless Online Church, we see this question every single day on our Prayer Wall. People aren't just looking for a theological lecture; they are looking for hope that doesn't ignore their hurt. They are looking for a God who doesn't just watch from a distance but steps into the mess with them. To find that hope, we have to look past the surface of our circumstances and into the heart of the One who made us.

He is Near to the Brokenhearted

The Reality of a Fallen World

The first step in understanding suffering is acknowledging that we live in a world that is "groaning," as the Apostle Paul describes in the book of Romans. Theology tells us that suffering entered the human experience through the fall. Because humanity was given the gift of free will: the ability to choose love and obedience: the possibility of choosing the opposite also became real. Much of the suffering we see is the result of human choices, while other forms are simply the result of living in a creation that is currently out of sync with God’s perfect design.

However, the existence of suffering does not prove the absence of God; rather, it highlights our desperate need for Him. In our post on surviving the refining fire, we discuss how God uses the heat of our circumstances to bring the "gold" of our faith to the surface. He doesn't always stop the fire, but He always walks through it with us.

Psalm 34:18: The Promise of Divine Proximity

One of the most comforting verses in all of Scripture is Psalm 34:18: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Notice that the promise isn't that God will always keep us from being brokenhearted. The promise is that when the breaking happens, He is closer than ever. For many, suffering becomes the thin space where they finally encounter the reality of Jesus Christ. When our worldly supports are stripped away, we find the "Everlasting Arms" mentioned in Deuteronomy.

If you are feeling "crushed in spirit" today, know that God is not disappointed in your pain. He is not impatient with your grief. He is a "Man of Sorrows, acquainted with grief" (Isaiah 53:3). Because Jesus suffered, He can empathize with your every weakness. You are never alone in the valley.

Purpose in Every Trial

Romans 8:28: The Redemptive Power of God

Often misquoted but deeply powerful, Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This verse does not say that all things *are* good. Cancer is not good. Divorce is not good. Grief is not good. However, it promises that God is a Master Weaver. He can take the black threads of our lives and the jagged edges of our pain and weave them into a larger tapestry that ultimately reflects His glory and our ultimate good.

The "good" mentioned here isn't necessarily temporal comfort or financial success. The context of Romans 8:29 clarifies that the goal is being "conformed to the image of His Son." God uses our trials to make us more like Jesus: more compassionate, more patient, and more anchored in eternity. This perspective is vital for families walking through hard seasons, as it helps children and parents alike see that their current struggle is not the end of their story.

The Gift of Community in the Midst of Pain

Suffering has a way of isolating us, but God designed the Church to be the "hands and feet" of His comfort. When we are too weak to pray, others pray for us. When we cannot see the light, others hold the torch. This is why digital discipleship and online community are so critical. If you are homebound, traveling, or simply overwhelmed, joining a Bible Study Club or an online small group can provide the relational lifeline you need to stay afloat.

Real life change often starts when we stop hiding our scars and start sharing our testimonies. As we noted in our guide to understanding your testimony, your greatest point of pain often becomes your greatest platform for ministry. God doesn't waste a single tear; He uses your experience to bring hope to someone else walking a similar path.

You Are Not Alone

How to Pray When You Feel Numb

When suffering is heavy, words often fail us. If you don't know what to say to God, start with honesty. The Bible is full of "laments": prayers that ask "How long, O Lord?" and "Why?" God can handle your questions. He can handle your anger. He simply wants your heart. Try these three steps when you feel stuck:

1. **Read the Psalms.** Let the words of David and the other psalmists give voice to your frustration and your hope.

2. **Sit in Silence.** Sometimes the best prayer is simply sitting in God’s presence and acknowledging that He is God and you are not.

3. **Ask for Help.** Reach out to a community of believers. Submit a request to the Prayer Wall and let our global community stand in the gap for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does God cause suffering as a punishment? While the Bible shows that actions have consequences, most suffering is a result of living in a fallen world rather than a direct "lightning bolt" of punishment for specific sins. Jesus specifically addressed this in John 9, stating that a man’s blindness wasn't due to sin, but so that the works of God might be displayed.

Why doesn't God answer my prayer for healing? This is one of the hardest mysteries of faith. We believe God has the power to heal and often does, but when He chooses not to, it is because He has a higher purpose that we cannot yet see. His silence is not His absence.

How can I find hope when everything feels hopeless? Hope isn't a feeling; it is a person. By fixing our eyes on Jesus and the promise of eternity, we find a "sure and steadfast anchor for the soul" (Hebrews 6:19) that holds even when the storm is raging.

Where is God when I am hurting? He is right there with you. He is the "Comforter" who walks alongside you, the Shepherd who carries you through the valley, and the Savior who has already defeated the ultimate cause of all suffering: sin and death.

A Pastoral Prayer for Your Heart

Lord Jesus, we come to You with heavy hearts and many questions. For the one reading this who is in the middle of a dark valley, I pray that You would make Your presence felt right now. Wrap Your arms around the brokenhearted. Provide the strength they need for just the next hour, and the next day. Help us to trust that You are working all things for good, even when we can't see it. Remind us that we are seen, loved, and never alone. Amen.
