Question: How Do We Mature in Faith During Difficult Seasons? 5 Steps to Growing in the Refining Fire

We mature in faith during difficult seasons by choosing to remain in the "refining fire" rather than running from the heat. Growth happens when we bring our raw, honest pain to God, anchor our identity in the unchanging truth of Scripture, and resolve that we will have a "No Bowing Down" attitude toward fear or cultural pressure. By leaning into community and maintaining consistent spiritual rhythms, we allow the Holy Spirit to transform our character and prove the genuineness of our faith.
Life has a way of turning up the heat when we least expect it. Whether it’s a sudden loss, a health crisis, or just a long season of feeling stuck, these "fires" aren't meant to consume us; they are meant to refine us. Here at Boundless Online Church, we believe that your faith doesn't have to break under pressure. In fact, that pressure is often exactly what God uses to make your faith stronger than ever before.
The Purpose of the Refining Fire
In the ancient world, a goldsmith would put gold into a furnace to melt it down. As the metal heated up, the impurities, the "dross", would rise to the surface. The goldsmith would skim that dross away, repeating the process until he could see his own reflection in the liquid gold.
God does the same with us. The trials we face aren't a sign of His absence; they are often a sign of His active work in our lives. He is skimming away the things that hold us back, pride, self-reliance, and fear, until the character of Jesus is clearly visible in us.
Scriptural Foundations for the Fire
1 Peter 1:6–7 (NIV): "In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith, of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
James 1:2–4 (NIV): "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
Daniel 3:17–18 (NIV): "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it... But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."
Romans 5:3–5 (NIV): "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

Choose Obedience (No Bowing Down), 5. Maintain Rhythms of Relationship. Website: www.boundlessonlinechurch.org centered at bottom.
1. Bring Your Honest Heart to God
Maturity doesn't mean putting on a "church face" and pretending everything is fine. In fact, real growth starts with radical honesty. If you’re hurting, angry, or confused, God can handle it. He prefers your honest "Why?" over a fake "Hallelujah."
In Memphis, we know about "keeping it real." The same applies to your prayer life. Use the Psalms as your guide. Many of them are "laments", prayers that cry out to God in the midst of pain. When you bring your honest heart to Him, you aren't pushing Him away; you’re inviting Him into the very center of your struggle.
Practical Step: Start a prayer journal. Don't worry about being poetic. Just write down exactly how you feel and what you’re asking God to do. This keeps your heart soft and prevents bitterness from taking root.
2. Stay Anchored in Scripture, Not in Circumstances
When the fire gets hot, your emotions will scream. They will tell you that God has forgotten you or that the situation will never change. This is why you must anchor yourself in something louder than your feelings: The Word of God.
Faith matures when we learn to trust what God has said more than what we see. Biblical authority isn't just a doctrine; it's a lifeline. When life feels like a storm, Scripture is the anchor that keeps you from drifting into despair.
Practical Step: Pick three "lifeline" verses. Write them on sticky notes, put them on your phone's lock screen, or memorize them. When the "smoke" of your circumstances gets thick, recite those truths out loud.
3. Remember and Record God’s Faithfulness
Suffering gives us spiritual amnesia. We forget that the same God who came through for us last year is the same God standing with us today. In the Bible, people built "Ebenezers", monuments made of stone, to remind them of where God had helped them.
You need your own "trust fund" of memories to draw from. When you look back and see how God provided, comforted, or delivered you in the past, it gives you the confidence to stand firm in the present. He hasn't changed, and He isn't starting now.
Practical Step: Make a "Faithfulness Timeline." Mark the major moments in your life where you felt God’s presence or saw His hand at work. Refer to it whenever you start to doubt.

4. Choose Obedience and the "No Bowing Down" Mindset
This is where the rubber meets the road. In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced a literal furnace. They were told to bow down to an idol or burn. Their response is a masterclass in mature faith: Even if God doesn't rescue us, we still won't bow.
Maturity is deciding that your obedience to Christ is not conditional on your comfort. We live in a culture that pressures us to bow down to all sorts of things, fear, compromise, and popular opinion. But a refined faith stands tall. It says, "I love the truth more than I love my own safety."
When you choose to do the right thing even when it hurts, you are growing "faith muscles" that cannot be developed any other way.
Practical Step: Identify one area where you’ve been tempted to "bow down" to fear or compromise. Make a conscious decision today to choose Christ-centered integrity instead.
5. Keep Rhythms of Relationship: With God and With Others
Isolation is the enemy of maturity. When we’re in the fire, our instinct is often to pull away and hide. But the refining process works best in the context of community. You weren't meant to walk through the furnace alone.
At Boundless Online Church, we emphasize that we are a global family. Whether you are in Memphis or halfway across the world, you need the strength of other believers. Stay connected to your online small groups, join the live services, and let people pray for you.
Consistency in your spiritual rhythms, prayer, worship, and fellowship, creates a stable environment for growth, even when the world around you is shaking.
Practical Step: Reach out to one person today. Text a friend or a member of your online group and simply say, "I'm going through a tough season, would you pray for me?"

A Prayer for the Refining Season
Lord, I thank You that You are with me in the fire. I ask that You would use this difficult season not to consume me, but to refine me. Help me to be honest with You, to stay anchored in Your Word, and to remember Your faithfulness. Give me a "No Bowing Down" spirit so that I may stand firm in the truth. Strengthen my connection with Your people and let my life reflect Your image more clearly every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
