Resting in the Secret Place: Finding 11 PM Peace

It's 11 PM. The house is finally quiet. The kids are asleep, the dishes are done (or maybe they're not, no judgment here), and the world has slowed down just enough for you to take a breath. But even in the stillness, your mind might still be racing. Replaying conversations. Worrying about tomorrow. Wondering if you did enough today.
Friend, this moment, right here, right now, is sacred. And it's exactly where God wants to meet you.
Welcome to the secret place.
What Is the "Secret Place"?
You've probably heard the phrase before, maybe in a worship song or a sermon. But what does it actually mean to dwell in the secret place of the Most High?
Psalm 91:1 says it beautifully: "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
The secret place isn't a physical location. It's not a specific prayer closet or a particular church pew. It's a spiritual state, a place of deep rest, honest communion, and complete surrender to God. It's where your soul finds peace, protection, and refuge, no matter what chaos swirled around you during the day.
And here's the beautiful thing: at 11 PM, when the world goes quiet, you have a perfect opportunity to enter that place.
You aren't just going to sleep. You are abiding in His shadow.

The Difference Between Visiting and Dwelling
Here's something Pastor Dr. Layne McDonald often reminds our Boundless community: there's a difference between visiting God's presence and dwelling there.
Visiting is quick. It's a rushed morning prayer or a hurried "thank you" before a meal. And those moments matter, don't get me wrong. But dwelling? That's different. Dwelling means making His presence your home.
To dwell in the secret place means being fully transparent with God. It means giving Him all of who you are, your fears, your failures, your hopes, and your future. It means not hiding the messy parts of your day or pretending you have it all together.
When you dwell, you receive something incredible in return: peace, protection, and the presence of God Himself.
At 11 PM, you have a choice. You can scroll through your phone, replay anxious thoughts, or let the weight of tomorrow steal your rest. Or you can choose to dwell. To enter the secret place. To rest under the shadow of the Almighty.
A Life Hack for Restless Nights: The Weighted Blanket Effect
Let's get practical for a moment. If your mind races at night (and whose doesn't sometimes?), here's a simple tip that can help your body catch up with your spirit.
Try a weighted blanket.
Weighted blankets, or even just an extra-heavy comforter, can actually lower cortisol levels (that's your stress hormone) and help your body feel grounded and safe. There's science behind it: the gentle pressure mimics the feeling of being held.
And spiritually? It mirrors the feeling of being held by God.
Think about it. Psalm 91 talks about being covered by His feathers, finding refuge under His wings. That's not just poetic language, it's a picture of being wrapped up, protected, and secure.
So tonight, as you pull that blanket up, let it be a physical reminder: I am held. I am covered. I am safe in His presence.

A Movie to Watch Before Bed: "The Lion King" (1994)
Okay, this might seem like an unexpected recommendation for a faith blog: but hear me out.
"The Lion King" is a beautiful story about finding your place and trusting that there's a larger plan at work. Simba runs from his past, carries guilt and shame, and tries to build a life far from where he belongs. But eventually, he hears the voice of his father calling him back. Reminding him of who he is. Inviting him home.
Sound familiar?
Before you sleep tonight, remember: you are part of God's "great circle" of care. He hasn't forgotten you. He's calling you back to rest in His presence. You belong in the secret place: not because you've earned it, but because you're His.
The Practice: The Final Surrender
Here's one of the most powerful things you can do at 11 PM. It only takes a moment, but it can transform how you sleep.
The Final Surrender.
As you close your eyes and settle into bed, physically open your hands at your sides. Palms up. Fingers relaxed. And then say these words: out loud or in your heart:
"I release today to You, Lord."
That's it. Simple, right? But it's a powerful physical act of letting go.
You're telling God: I don't need to carry this anymore. The mistakes, the stress, the unfinished tasks, the worries about tomorrow: I'm placing them in Your hands. I'm choosing to rest.
This isn't about ignoring your problems or pretending they don't exist. It's about acknowledging that God is bigger than every single one of them. And He's inviting you to sleep in peace while He stays awake, watching over you.

Your 11 PM Affirmation
Words matter. What you speak over yourself before you sleep can shape your rest and even your tomorrow. So tonight, try this biblical affirmation:
"I am hidden in the secret place of the Most High. I am safe, I am loved, and I am resting under the shadow of the Almighty."
Say it slowly. Let it sink in. Believe it: because it's true.
You are never forgotten. You are never alone. You are deeply, unconditionally loved by God. And right now, in this quiet moment, He's inviting you to rest in that love.
