Revival & Gen Z: Is God Doing Something New Among the Next Generation?

The local coffee shop is quiet, but the hearts of those inside are anything but, there is a quiet, persistent whisper moving through the 901 and across the digital landscape that something is shifting.

Is God really pouring out His Spirit on Gen Z right now?

Yes. Through spontaneous outpourings like Asbury 2023, the UniteUS movement, and campus-wide awakenings at Southeastern University (SEU) in 2026, God is responding to the authentic hunger of a generation that values truth over production and presence over programs.

While headlines often focus on the "rise of the nones" and the decline of traditional religion, a deeper story is being written in the hearts of young adults in Memphis and around the world. We are witnessing a generation, Gen Z, that isn't walking away from God; they are walking away from empty religion in search of an encounter with the Living Christ.

The Anatomy of an Awakening: From Asbury to Memphis

In February 2023, a simple chapel service at Asbury University didn't end. It stretched into weeks of 24/7 prayer, worship, and repentance. There were no flashing lights, no celebrity speakers, and no high-tech marketing. There was only the presence of God and a group of students who were willing to wait.

This "Asbury Awakening" was a spark. It wasn't just about one school in Kentucky; it was a signal that the "sons and daughters" mentioned in the book of Joel are rising up.

"And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions." , Joel 2:28

Why Gen Z is Primed for Revival

Gen Z (born between roughly 1997 and 2012) is often described as the most lonely and anxious generation in history. They have grown up in a digital-first world, navigating a pandemic, social unrest, and the constant pressure of a curated online life. But where the world sees "low-wattage nihilism," the Holy Spirit sees a harvest field.

As we look toward the UniteUS movements and the SEU 2026 campus gatherings, we see that this generation isn't interested in "church as usual." They are looking for:

  1. Unapologetic Worship: They want to worship with everything they have, without worrying about how it looks.

  2. Radical Repentance: There is a deep desire to be holy and to deal with sin through confession and restoration.

  3. Biblical Authority: In a world of "your truth" and "my truth," they are hungry for THE Truth found in the Word of God.

Definition: Repentance Biblically, repentance (metanoia) is a change of mind and heart that leads to a change of direction. It is turning away from sin and toward God.

Revival is not an event you attend; it is a presence you carry.

The Assemblies of God Perspective: Spirit-Empowered Living

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that revival isn't just a feeling; it’s a functional empowerment. According to our Assemblies of God framework, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience that empowers the believer for witnessing and service.

When we see thousands of students gathering at Auburn for UniteUS or filling the arenas for the Forrest Frank Jesus Generation Tour, we see more than just a concert. We see a generation being "endued with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). This isn't just about emotional highs; it's about a permanent shift in identity.

Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit An experience following salvation where the believer is empowered by the Holy Spirit for life and service, often accompanied by the initial physical sign of speaking in tongues.

Practical Steps for Those Seeking Revival

If you feel a stirring in your heart for something more, you don't have to wait for a massive event to come to Memphis. Revival starts with a single "Yes" in your bedroom, your dorm, or your office.

  • Pray with Humility: As 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, we must humble ourselves, pray, and seek His face. Revival is God’s response to our hunger.

  • Get into the Word: Don't rely on clips or TikTok theology. Read the Bible for yourself. Let the Word of God define your reality.

  • Find Community: Whether it's at FA Memphis in the 901 or through Boundless Online Church, you were not meant to follow Jesus alone.

  • Expect the "New": God said in Isaiah 43:19, "See, I am doing a new thing!" Don't be so attached to how things "used to be" that you miss what God is doing right now.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? Isaiah 43:19
