Safe Harbor: How to Connect with Jesus in Unsafe Places

Some of you are reading this from places where following Jesus could cost you everything.

Your family doesn't know you've been praying. Your neighbors can't discover the Bible app on your phone. Even searching for "how to become a Christian" feels dangerous.

You're not alone.

And Jesus sees you.

The Promise That Matters Most

Let's be honest about something hard: Following Jesus doesn't guarantee physical safety.

The center of God's will might actually be one of the most dangerous places you could imagine. Corrie ten Boom and her family rescued nearly 800 Jews during the Holocaust. They were doing exactly what Jesus called them to do. And the Gestapo still arrested them in 1944.

But here's what never changed, even in a concentration camp: God's presence.

That's the promise that holds when everything else falls apart. Not that you'll avoid danger. Not that persecution won't come. But that He will never leave you or stop loving you.

Ever.

The Secret Power You Carry

Here's where Assemblies of God theology offers something beautiful for those in unsafe places: the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus left earth, He didn't leave His followers defenseless. He sent the Holy Spirit, God Himself, to live inside every believer.

This isn't just theological theory. This is power for right now.

The Holy Spirit doesn't need a church building. Doesn't need a public worship service. Doesn't need anyone else around.

He lives in you. Privately. Secretly. Powerfully.

Jesus told His disciples in Acts 1:8: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you." That power is for witnessing, yes. But it's also for enduring. For staying faithful when everything around you says to quit.

When you can't speak your faith out loud, the Spirit prays for you "with groanings too deep for words" (Romans 8:26). When you're isolated from other believers, He becomes your counselor, your comforter, your constant companion.

No government can legislate Him away. No family member can forbid Him. No employer can fire Him.

He's yours. Forever.

Connecting with Jesus When No One's Watching

So how do you actually grow in faith when it has to stay hidden?

Find Your Secret Place

Jesus had one. Matthew 6:6 says, "When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen."

Your secret place might be a literal room. Or it might be a daily walk where no one follows you. A bathroom where you lock the door. The few minutes before everyone else wakes up.

Wherever it is, make it sacred. That's where you meet Jesus face-to-face, with no performance, no pretense, no fear.

Use What's Already on Your Phone

Bible apps can look like anything else on your screen. Reading plans can happen in the Notes app. You can listen to worship music with headphones while doing something else.

We live in a time when God's Word can hide in plain sight. Use that gift.

The Boundless Online Church website offers resources that don't require registration or public interaction. You can listen, read, and learn privately. No one has to know.

Pray Without Ceasing

Paul's instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 wasn't meant for monks in monasteries. It was for regular people living regular lives.

You can pray with your eyes open. While making dinner. While walking to work. While sitting in a meeting.

Your thoughts can be prayers. Your heart's cries can be worship. No one around you has to know you're having a conversation with the God of the universe.

Memorize Scripture

What's hidden in your heart can never be taken away.

Start small. One verse. Then another. Let God's Word become part of your internal dialogue, shaping how you think and respond to everything around you.

Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." But it also protects you. Strengthens you. Reminds you who you belong to when everything else says otherwise.

Biblical Safe Harbor

Scripture gives us two powerful images of protection.

First, the cities of refuge in the Old Testament. When someone's life was in danger, they could run to a designated city and find safety. It was a legal, physical place of protection.

God Himself is that refuge now. Psalm 46:1 declares, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."

You might not have a physical safe place. But you have a spiritual one. And it's more secure than any building.

Second, Jesus calming the storm. When His disciples thought they were going to die in a boat during a violent storm, Jesus spoke to the wind and waves: "Quiet! Be still!"

And immediately, everything was calm.

He has authority over the chaos threatening you. Even when the storm doesn't stop physically, He can give you supernatural peace in the middle of it.

The Community You Can't See

One of the hardest parts of hidden faith is the isolation.

You might be the only believer in your family. Your workplace. Your entire community.

But you're not alone globally.

Right now, at this exact moment, believers around the world are praying. Worshiping. Reading the same Scriptures. Following the same Jesus.

You're part of a family that spans every nation, language, and time zone. The Church isn't just the people who can meet publicly. It's everyone who belongs to Jesus, whether anyone else knows it or not.

Hebrews 12:1 talks about a "great cloud of witnesses" surrounding us. That includes every believer who's gone before, every one living now, and everyone who will come after.

You belong to them. And they belong to you.

When Following Jesus Means Risking Everything

Some of you face a choice: stay silent and stay safe, or speak up and face consequences.

We can't make that choice for you.

But we can remind you what Jesus said: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it" (Matthew 16:24-25).

Following Jesus has always cost something. For some, the cost is reputation. For others, it's relationships. For some, it's everything.

Only you and the Holy Spirit can discern what obedience looks like in your specific situation. But know this: whatever you give up for Jesus, you gain something infinitely greater.

You're Not Forgotten

God sees you right where you are.

He knows your name. Knows your fears. Knows every risk you take just to seek Him.

And He's proud of you.

You might feel forgotten by the world. But heaven is cheering you on. Every prayer you whisper in secret is heard. Every step of faith you take in the dark is seen.

You matter to the Kingdom in ways you won't understand until eternity.
