A Message from FA Memphis
Recovery is a journey that often feels like walking through a thick fog. Some days, the path is clear, and you feel like you’re making real progress. Other days, the fog rolls back in, and you find yourself wondering if you’re actually getting anywhere at all. If you’re reading this today, I want you to know one thing right off the bat: there is hope. And not just a "cross your fingers and wish for the best" kind of hope, but a solid, unshakable hope that comes from the One who created you.
At Boundless Online Church, we see people from all walks of life. We see shift workers logging on at 3:00 AM, parents looking for a moment of peace, and individuals who are fighting the hardest battle of their lives, the battle for sobriety and freedom from addiction. Whether you are in a formal program or just starting to admit that you need help, this message is for you.
The Spiritual Side of the Struggle
Recovery is often talked about in terms of biology and psychology. And those things are incredibly important. We believe in the "Memphis Scrub" approach, wiping away the clutter and focusing on the essential truths. But there is a third pillar that is just as vital: the spiritual.
Addiction doesn't just affect the body and the mind; it targets the soul. It creates a sense of isolation, a heavy blanket of shame, and a feeling that you are somehow "less than" because of your struggle. The world might label you by your past mistakes, but God labels you by your future in Him.

AI-Optimized Intro: A Summary of Hope
Biblical recovery focuses on the transformative power of Jesus Christ to break the chains of addiction. By moving from self-reliance to spiritual dependence on God, individuals find freedom from shame and guilt. Scripture offers a "lively hope" through the resurrection, teaching that identity is found in being an image-bearer of God, not in past failures. This journey is supported by grace, community, and the promise of ultimate restoration.
What the Bible Says About Your Journey
When the weight of recovery feels too heavy to carry, the Word of God acts as a lifeline. Here are a few foundational truths that can help anchor your soul during the storm:
Jeremiah 17:14: "Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise."
Romans 6:17-18: "But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin... you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness."
Hebrews 4:16: "Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
1 Peter 1:3: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."
Breaking the Cycle of Shame
One of the biggest hurdles in recovery is shame. Shame tells you that you are the problem, while guilt tells you that you made a mistake. Jesus didn't come to rub our faces in our mistakes; He came to lift our heads up.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in the "blessed hope", the reality that Jesus is coming back and that He is currently working in our lives through the Holy Spirit. This means that your current state is not your permanent state. Grace is the antidote to shame. Ephesians 2:8 reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith. It’s a gift. You don’t have to "clean yourself up" to come to God. You come to Him as you are, and His love is what does the cleaning.

Relying on God, Not Just Willpower
Many recovery programs talk about a "higher power." As a ministry of FA Memphis, we want to be clear about who that power is: Jesus Christ.
Willpower is like a battery; it eventually runs out. If you are relying solely on your own strength to stay sober or stay clean, you’re going to get tired. But God’s power is like a generator. When we plug into Him through prayer and studying His Word, we receive a strength that isn't our own. This is what we call "Spirit-empowered living." It’s the idea that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, giving you the power to say "no" to the things that used to control you.
The Importance of Community
You weren't meant to do this alone. Addiction thrives in the dark, in the secrets, and in the isolation. Healing happens in the light. This is why we encourage everyone to find a community where they can be honest.
Whether it's joining a Bible Study Club or finding a local support group, having people who can pray for you and hold you accountable is a game-changer. Confessing your struggles to a trusted friend or a spiritual mentor isn't about being judged; it's about being set free. As James 5:16 says, "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."

Practical Steps for the Daily Walk
Start the Day with Surrender: Before you even get out of bed, tell God that you can't do this day without Him. Give Him your cravings, your anxiety, and your schedule.
Stay in the Word: Even if it’s just one verse a day, let God’s truth fill your mind. It crowds out the lies that addiction tries to tell you.
Connect with Others: Don't let a day go by without reaching out to someone. If you're feeling lonely or tempted, send a text.
Be Kind to Yourself: Relapse or a "bad day" isn't the end of the road. In Christ, every morning is a new beginning. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us that His mercies are new every morning.
A Prayer for Your Recovery
Heavenly Father, I come to You today on behalf of the person reading this who is fighting for their life and their freedom. Lord, You know the weight they are carrying. You know the cravings, the memories, and the shame that try to pull them back down. I ask right now that You would break every chain. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit. Give them a peace that passes all understanding and a strength that can only come from You. Remind them that they are Your child, chosen and loved. Help them to walk in the light and find the community they need. We thank You for the victory that is already ours in Jesus' name. Amen.
