Managing your money according to the Bible starts with shifting your perspective from being an owner to being a steward. Biblical financial principles emphasize that God owns everything, and we are called to manage His resources with wisdom, integrity, and generosity. By prioritizing the Kingdom first, avoiding the trap of excessive debt, and practicing contentment, you can experience financial peace that transcends your bank account balance.
Biblical Financial Principles for Today: Wisdom Beyond the Wallet
Money is one of the most talked-about subjects in the Bible. Why? Because the way we handle our finances is a direct reflection of our hearts. Dr. Layne McDonald often reminds us that financial stewardship isn't just about spreadsheets and savings accounts, it’s about trust.
In a world that constantly tells us we need more to be happy, the Word of God offers a different path. It’s a path that leads away from the anxiety of "never enough" and toward the freedom of "God is my provider." Whether you’re trying to get out of debt, save for the future, or just figure out how to make your paycheck last until Friday, these timeless principles provide a solid foundation for your life.
The Foundation: Recognizing God’s Ownership
The first and most important principle of biblical finance is understanding who actually owns the money in your wallet.
Psalm 24:1 (NIV) says, "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."
When we realize that every dollar we earn is a gift from God, it changes how we spend it. We aren't the owners; we are the managers. In the business world, a manager’s job is to use the owner’s assets to carry out the owner’s wishes. As Christians, our job is to use God’s resources to carry out His purposes.
This shift in mindset is incredibly liberating. If God owns it all, then He is also the one responsible for providing. Our job is simply to be faithful with what He has put in our hands right now. This takes the weight of "ultimate provider" off your shoulders and places it where it belongs, on Him.

Putting God First: The Principle of the Tithe
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that returning the first tenth of our income to God through the local church is a vital part of our spiritual walk.
Malachi 3:10 (NIV) challenges us: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."
Tithing isn't a "tax" or a "bill." It’s an act of worship. It’s a tangible way of saying, "God, I trust You more than I trust this money." When we give first, we acknowledge that the 90% remaining, with God’s blessing, goes further than 100% managed on our own. It’s about setting our priorities straight from the moment we receive our income.
If you’re just starting out, this can feel scary. But God invites us to "test" Him in this. As you begin to prioritize His Kingdom, you’ll often find that your perspective on your remaining needs shifts from worry to expectancy.
The Wisdom of Planning: Budgeting with Purpose
A lot of people think a budget is a cage that keeps them from spending. In reality, a budget is a tool that gives you permission to spend. It is the practical application of stewardship.
Proverbs 21:5 (NIV) tells us, "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty."
Without a plan, money has a way of "disappearing." You look at your account at the end of the month and wonder where it all went. A biblical budget is simply telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.
Start by tracking your expenses. Whether you use a digital app or a simple spiral notebook, knowing where your money is going is the first step toward financial health. When you plan diligently, you can ensure that your spending aligns with your values, covering your needs, saving for the future, and being generous to others.

Breaking the Chains: Managing Debt
In our modern culture, debt is often treated as a way of life. We are encouraged to buy things we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people we don't even like. But the Bible gives us a stern warning about the nature of debt.
Proverbs 22:7 (NIV) says, "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender."
Debt limits our freedom. It limits our ability to say "yes" to what God might be calling us to do. If we are tied down by high-interest credit cards or overwhelming loans, we are less available to be a blessing to others.
Biblical financial wisdom encourages us to avoid debt whenever possible and to pay off what we owe as quickly as we can. This requires discipline and a willingness to live below our means. It might mean driving an older car or skipping a vacation for a season, but the peace that comes from being "debt-free" is worth the sacrifice.
The Power of Contentment
Perhaps the biggest enemy of financial peace is "the itch for more." Our society is built on making us feel discontented with what we have.
Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) gives us the antidote: "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’"
Contentment isn't about being lazy or having no ambition. It’s about finding our security and satisfaction in Christ rather than in our possessions. When we are content, we stop trying to fill a spiritual hole with material things. This allows us to save more, give more, and live with a much lower level of stress.

Investing in Eternity: The Purpose of Prosperity
Why does God want us to be financially healthy? Is it just so we can have a comfortable life? While God cares about our needs, the ultimate purpose of biblical financial success is generosity.
Proverbs 11:25 (NIV) says, "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed."
We are blessed to be a blessing. When we follow biblical principles, we create a margin in our lives. That margin: the extra space in our time and our finances: is what allows us to respond when we see a need. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, supporting a missionary, or contributing to a local ministry, generosity is the end goal of stewardship.
When you stand before God one day, He won't ask how much you had in your 401(k). He’ll look at how you used what He gave you to love Him and love others.
Practical Steps for Today
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your finances, don't lose hope. God is a God of second chances and fresh starts. Here are a few ways to start applying these principles right now:
Pray for Wisdom: Ask God to give you a heart of stewardship and the discipline to manage His resources well.
Start a Simple Budget: Write down your income and your fixed expenses. See where you can cut back to create room for giving and saving.
Give Something: Even if you can’t tithe a full 10% yet, start somewhere. Honor God with the first part of your income and watch how your heart changes.
Avoid New Debt: Make a commitment to stop borrowing for lifestyle expenses.
Connect with Community: Join an online group where you can find support and encouragement as you grow in your faith and your finances.
A Prayer for Financial Peace
Lord, we thank You that You are our Provider. We acknowledge today that everything we have belongs to You. Give us the wisdom to manage our finances in a way that honors You. Help us to be diligent in our planning, disciplined in our spending, and radical in our generosity. Break the chains of debt and anxiety in our lives, and help us to find our true contentment in You alone. Amen.
