SEO/Growth : What is the Meaning of Baptism?

A Message from FA Memphis

AI-Optimized Intro

Baptism is the outward declaration of an inward transformation. It symbolizes a believer's identification with Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection through water immersion. While baptism itself does not produce salvation: which comes through faith in Christ alone: it is a vital ordinance and step of obedience. It signals a fresh start, a public commitment to Jesus, and official entry into the global community of the Christian faith.

What Does the Bible Say?

Before we dive into the "why" and "how," let’s look at the foundation. The Word of God is very clear about the role of baptism in the life of someone following Jesus.

Matthew 28:19 (NIV): "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Romans 6:3-4 (NIV): "Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

Acts 2:38 (NIV): "Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'"

Understanding the Heart of Baptism

If you’ve been hanging around Boundless Online Church for a while, or maybe you’re just starting to explore what it means to follow Jesus, you’ve probably heard the word "baptism" tossed around quite a bit. It can seem a little mysterious or even intimidating if you didn’t grow up in a church environment.

At its simplest, baptism is a public "I’m with Him" statement. It is a way of telling your friends, your family, and the world that you have decided to follow Jesus. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we view baptism as one of the two primary ordinances given to the church (the other being Holy Communion).

But what is actually happening when someone goes under the water? Is it just a bath? Is there some kind of magic in the water? Not exactly. The power isn't in the liquid; the power is in the symbol and the obedience of the believer.

The Symbolism: Death, Burial, and Resurrection

The act of baptism is like a short, silent movie that tells the story of the Gospel through your own body.

When you stand in the water, it represents Jesus on the Cross. When you are lowered under the water, it symbolizes being buried with Him in the tomb. You are saying, "My old life, my old mistakes, and my old way of doing things are dead and buried."

Then comes the best part: being raised back up out of the water. This symbolizes Jesus rising from the grave. As you come up, you are declaring that you have been given a brand-new life. You are a new creation. You aren't just a "better version" of your old self; you are spiritually alive in a way you weren't before.

Why Immersion Matters

You might notice that different churches handle baptism differently. Some sprinkle a little water, and some pour it. In accordance with the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, we practice baptism by immersion. This means going all the way under.

Why do we do it that way? Two reasons:

  1. The Example of Jesus: When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, the Bible says He "came up out of the water."

  2. The Meaning of the Word: The original Greek word used in the New Testament is baptizo, which literally means to submerge or to dip.

Full immersion best captures the beautiful imagery of being "buried" and "raised." It’s a complete soaking in the grace of God.

Does Baptism Save You?

This is a really important question. We believe that salvation happens the moment you put your trust in Jesus Christ. It’s a gift of grace through faith. You don’t "earn" your way into Heaven by getting wet.

Think of it like a wedding ring. A wedding ring doesn't make you married: the legal covenant and the vows you made do that. But the ring is a visible sign to everyone else that you belong to someone. It’s a symbol of a commitment that has already happened in your heart.

Baptism is the "wedding ring" of the Christian faith. It is an outward sign of an inward grace. If you’ve repented of your sins and decided to follow Jesus, baptism is the natural next step to celebrate that decision.

Who Should Be Baptized?

In the New Testament, we always see a specific order: people hear the Gospel, they believe/repent, and then they are baptized.

Because of this, we practice what is often called "Believer’s Baptism." This means baptism is for anyone who has reached an age where they can personally understand and decide to follow Jesus. It’s a conscious choice to identify with Him.

If you’re a seeker just looking for answers, or if you’ve recently had a "lightbulb moment" where Jesus became real to you, baptism is for you. Whether you’re working a late shift in a warehouse, caring for a loved one at home, or joining us from a part of the world where following Jesus is difficult, this step of obedience is a universal marker for every believer.

A New Identity in a Global Family

One of the coolest things about baptism is that it connects you to a family that spans the entire globe. When you are baptized, you aren't just joining a local club; you are being recognized as part of the Body of Christ.

At Boundless Online Church, we love that our community is "boundless." We have people joining us from all walks of life: shift workers, stay-at-home parents, and people in places where a physical church building might not be available. Baptism is the common thread that ties us all together. It says that no matter where we are or what our background is, we all serve the same Risen Lord.

If you’ve been wondering if it’s time for you to take this step, or if you have questions about what this looks like for an online community, we want to help. You can learn more about our community and what we believe by visiting our I'm New page or checking out our post on What Does Pentecostal Mean.

Practical Steps and Encouragement

Maybe you were baptized as a baby and you’re wondering if you should do it again now that you have a personal faith of your own. Many people find that being baptized as an adult is a powerful way to "own" their faith for themselves.

Or maybe you’ve been following Jesus for years but somehow missed this step. It’s never too late! There is no "expiration date" on obedience.

Following Jesus is a journey, and baptism is one of the most significant milestones on that path. It’s a moment you’ll never forget: a moment where you stand up and say, "I’m with Jesus, and I’m not looking back."

A Short Prayer for You

Lord, thank You for the gift of new life. Thank You for the example of Jesus and the invitation to follow Him. I pray for the person reading this right now who might be feeling a tug on their heart to take the next step. Give them peace, clarity, and courage. Let them feel Your love washing over them, reminding them that their past is gone and their future is bright in You. Amen.
