Sharing Your Faith: How to Witness with Love and Boldness

Sharing your faith shouldn’t feel like a high-pressure sales pitch. In this guide, we explore how to witness effectively by balancing deep Christian love with Holy Spirit-inspired boldness. You’ll learn how to overcome the fear of rejection, rely on the Spirit’s power, and share your personal testimony in a way that is both gentle and life-changing for those who hear it.

Foundation in the Word

To witness with confidence, we first look to the instructions left for us in Scripture. These verses serve as our compass when we step out to share the Good News.

Acts 1:8 (NIV) "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

Witnessing: A Blend of Grace and Truth

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that every believer is called to be a witness. However, many of us feel a knot in our stomachs at the very thought of "evangelism." We worry about saying the wrong thing, being asked a question we can't answer, or losing a friendship.

The secret to effective witnessing isn't a better script; it's a better foundation. When we align ourselves with the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, specifically the mission of the church to seek and save that which is lost, we realize that witnessing is simply an overflow of our relationship with Christ.

The Heart of the Matter: Love as the Engine

Witnessing begins with love. If we try to share the Gospel without genuine love for the person in front of us, our words can sound like "a clanging cymbal."

Think about the people you encounter daily, the person working the late shift at the hospital, the weary parent in the grocery line, or the neighbor who seems isolated. Do we see them through the eyes of Jesus?

Boldness without love is harsh. Love without boldness is silent. To witness like Jesus did, we need both. Love provides the "why," and boldness provides the "how." When you truly love someone, you want them to have the same peace, hope, and eternal security that you have found in Christ.

Boldness through the Holy Spirit

One of our core beliefs is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, which provides believers with an endowment of power for life and service. This isn't just a theological concept; it's a practical reality for witnessing.

You don't have to manufacture boldness on your own. Acts 1:8 promises that the Spirit gives us the power to be witnesses. When you feel that nudge to speak to someone, that’s often the Holy Spirit opening a door. You can pray right then and there: "Lord, give me Your words and Your courage."

Boldness doesn't mean being loud or confrontational. It means having the "calm power" to speak the truth even when your hands are shaking. It’s the willingness to be uncomfortable for the sake of someone else's eternity.

Practical Steps for Sharing Your Faith

So, how do we actually do this in our daily lives? Here are a few practical ways to witness with love and boldness:

1. Start with Prayer Before you talk to people about God, talk to God about people. Ask the Lord to soften hearts and create opportunities. If you have a specific friend or family member on your heart, you can even post a request on our Prayer Wall to have our community join you in interceding for them.

2. The Power of Listening Often, the best way to share the Gospel is to listen first. People need to know they are heard. When you listen to someone's struggles or joys, you earn the right to speak into their life. Ask open-ended questions. "How are you really doing?" "What's been on your mind lately?"

3. Share Your Story (Your Testimony) You don't need a theology degree to share what Jesus has done for you. Your personal story is one of the most powerful tools you have. No one can argue with your experience.

  • What was your life like before Christ?

  • How did you meet Him?

  • How is your life different now?

Keep it simple and focused on Jesus. You are a witness, not a judge or a lawyer. Your job is simply to tell what you have seen and heard.

4. Season Your Speech with Grace As 1 Peter 3:15 says, we should always be ready to give an answer, but with "gentleness and respect." We aren't out to win arguments; we are out to win souls. If a conversation becomes heated, it’s okay to step back. The goal is to leave the door open for future conversations.

Utilizing Resources

Sometimes, the best first step is an invitation. If you find it difficult to start the conversation, invite someone to watch our Sunday Sermons with you online. It’s a low-pressure way for them to hear the Word of God from the comfort of their own home.

For those who want to dive deeper into understanding the Word so they can explain it better, our Clarion Call Bible Study is a great place to sharpen your own understanding. The more grounded you are in the Truth, the more naturally it will flow out of you.

Overcoming the Fear of Rejection

It’s important to remember that if someone rejects the message of the Gospel, they aren't rejecting you: they are responding to God. Our responsibility is to plant the seed; God is the one who makes it grow.

Jesus told us that the world might not always receive our message. But He also promised to be with us "always, to the very end of the age." You are never alone when you are witnessing. You are part of a global family of believers, and you are backed by the power of the Living God.

A Prayer for Boldness

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord, I ask that You fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Give me a heart that breaks for the things that break Yours. Help me to see the people around me with love and compassion.

Remove the spirit of fear and replace it with Your power, love, and a sound mind. Grant me the boldness to speak when You open a door and the wisdom to use words that are seasoned with grace. Let my life be a reflection of Your goodness, and use me to help others find their way home to You. Amen.
