Welcome home, friend! Whether you've grown up in the Assemblies of God tradition or you're just beginning to explore what Spirit-filled faith looks like, you've probably heard the phrase "speaking in tongues" at some point. Maybe you've witnessed it in a worship service, heard about it from a family member, or you're simply curious about what it all means.
Here's the beautiful thing: you don't have to feel confused or intimidated by this topic.
We're going to walk through it together, what it is, why it matters, and how it connects to your personal journey with God. Sound good? Let's dive in.
What Exactly Is Speaking in Tongues?
At its core, speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift, a supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit that allows a believer to speak in a language they've never learned. It's not something you practice or memorize; it's something that flows from the Spirit working through you.
In Pentecostal and Assemblies of God churches, we believe that speaking in tongues serves as the initial physical evidence that a person has been baptized in the Holy Spirit. That phrase might sound a little formal, but let me break it down for you.

Think of it this way: when something significant happens, there's usually a sign that confirms it. When you graduate, you get a diploma. When you get married, you exchange rings.
When the Holy Spirit fills a believer in a powerful, transformative way, speaking in tongues is often the first outward sign that something incredible has taken place on the inside.
Where Does This Belief Come From?
Great question! This isn't something we made up, it's rooted directly in Scripture, specifically in the Book of Acts.
On the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), the disciples were gathered together when the Holy Spirit descended upon them. What happened next was extraordinary: they began speaking in languages they had never learned, and people from all different nations could understand them. It was the first external, observable sign that the Spirit had arrived in power.
But it didn't stop there. Throughout the Book of Acts, we see this pattern repeat:
When Philip baptized believers in Samaria, the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 8)
When Peter visited Cornelius's household, the Spirit fell and they spoke in tongues (Acts 10)
When Paul encountered believers in Ephesus, they received the Spirit and spoke in tongues (Acts 19)
This consistent biblical pattern is why the Assemblies of God holds speaking in tongues as a foundational belief. It's not about being weird or different, it's about being biblical.
Understanding "Initial" Evidence
Here's something important: when we say tongues are the initial evidence, we're not saying it's the only evidence of the Holy Spirit's work in your life. Not at all!

The word "initial" simply means it's the first sign. Think of it like the first domino in a beautiful chain reaction. After the initial evidence of tongues, other manifestations of the Spirit follow, things like the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness), spiritual gifts like prophecy and healing, and a transformed character that looks more and more like Jesus.
Speaking in tongues opens the door, but it's just the beginning of a Spirit-empowered life. How exciting is that?
Why Does It Need to Be "Physical"?
You might be wondering: "Can't I just feel the Holy Spirit? Isn't that enough?"
Here's the thing, friend, feelings are wonderful, but they're also deeply personal and hard to verify. You might feel joy, peace, or an overwhelming sense of God's presence, and those experiences are absolutely real and valuable. But they're internal.
Speaking in tongues, on the other hand, is external and observable. It's something that can be seen and heard, not just by you, but by others around you. It provides tangible confirmation that the Holy Spirit has come upon you in a powerful way.
This isn't about showing off or proving something to others. It's about receiving a concrete, biblical sign that you've entered into a deeper dimension of your relationship with God.
What About Believers Who Are Deaf?
This is such an important question, and I love that it comes up because it shows we care about inclusion and accessibility in the body of Christ.
Some Pentecostal denominations, including many in the Assemblies of God family, recognize signed tongues as a valid equivalent for deaf believers. Since a deaf person may not be able to produce or confirm vocal tongue-speaking, signing in an unknown language they've never learned fulfills the same evidential purpose.

Isn't that beautiful? The Holy Spirit meets us exactly where we are. God's gifts aren't limited by our physical circumstances, they're adapted and expressed in ways that honor each person's unique experience.
Common Questions and Concerns
"What if I've never spoken in tongues? Am I less of a Christian?"
Absolutely not. Your salvation is secure in Jesus Christ, and your value as a believer has nothing to do with whether you've experienced this particular gift. Speaking in tongues is about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, a subsequent experience to salvation that empowers you for service and deeper intimacy with God. It's available to every believer, and if you're seeking it, keep pressing in with an open heart.
"Can I seek this gift?"
Yes! In fact, Jesus encouraged His followers to ask for the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13). If you desire to be filled with the Spirit and receive this gift, spend time in prayer, worship, and surrender. Ask God to fill you afresh, and trust His timing.
"What does it feel like?"
Everyone's experience is different. Some people describe a bubbling up from within, while others simply find unfamiliar syllables forming on their lips during prayer. The key is to stay open, relaxed, and focused on Jesus, not on the experience itself.
