Spiritual Growth: How Do We Mature in Faith During Difficult Seasons?

We mature in faith during difficult seasons by allowing the "refining fire" of God to purify our motives, remove spiritual distractions, and deepen our dependence on Jesus. Instead of seeing trials as a sign of God's absence, we recognize them as a tool for our growth. Maturity happens when we stop trying to escape the heat and start asking God what He wants to burn away and what He wants to build up. By holding fast to the "No Bowing Down" principle: refusing to compromise our values under pressure: we emerge with a faith that is stronger, purer, and more resilient than ever before.

The biblical foundation of the refining fire

When life gets hard, it feels like everything is falling apart. But in the Kingdom of God, what feels like "falling apart" is often God "pulling us apart" from the things that hold us back. The Bible uses the image of a refiner’s fire not to describe destruction, but to describe the process of making something more valuable. A refiner doesn’t throw gold into the fire to get rid of the gold; he throws it in to get rid of the dross: the junk that keeps the gold from shining.

Here are the scriptures that ground us when the heat is on:

  • Malachi 3:2-3: "But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver."

  • James 1:2-4: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

  • 1 Peter 1:6-7: "In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith: of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire: may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."

  • Romans 5:3-5: "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

  • Zechariah 13:9: "This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’"

5 ways the refining fire matures your faith

1. It purifies your purpose

In the easy seasons of life, it’s easy to follow Jesus for the "blessings." We like the peace, the community, and the feeling of being "good." But when a difficult season hits: a health crisis, a job loss, or a broken relationship: our motives are put to the test. The refining fire asks the question: Do you love the Giver, or just the gifts? Maturity begins when our purpose shifts from "What can God do for me?" to "How can I honor God in this?" This purification makes your faith unshakable because it’s no longer built on your circumstances, but on the character of Christ.

2. It removes "Spiritual Dross"

Dross is the scum that rises to the top when precious metal is heated. In our lives, dross represents the things we’ve let slide: bitterness, pride, secret sins, or self-reliance. Often, we don't even know these things are there until the heat is turned up. When pressure hits, the "scum" of our character rises to the surface. While that’s uncomfortable, it’s actually a gift from God. He is showing you what needs to be skimmed off so you can reflect His image more clearly. Maturity is the process of letting God remove what doesn’t belong.

3. It deepens your dependence

Most of us in Memphis and beyond take pride in being "self-made" or independent. But spiritual maturity is actually a journey toward dependence, not away from it. Difficult seasons strip away the illusion that we are in control. When you reach the end of your own strength, you finally discover the limitlessness of God’s strength. Like the vine and the branches mentioned in John 15, we realize that apart from Him, we can do nothing. The fire forces us to lean in closer to the Father.

4. It strengthens your character

You can’t build muscle without resistance, and you can’t build character without trials. The "No Bowing Down" theme we talk about at Boundless Online Church is all about this. Just like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow to the idol even when the furnace was heated seven times hotter, maturity gives you the "Refining Fire" backbone to stay true to God when it’s hard. Every time you choose to trust God instead of giving in to fear or compromise, your spiritual "muscles" grow stronger.

5. It prepares you for service

God never wastes a hurt. One of the greatest marks of a mature believer is the ability to comfort others with the same comfort they received from God. Your "furnace experience" becomes your ministry. When you’ve walked through the fire and come out on the other side, you have a level of authority and compassion that you simply couldn't have gained any other way. You become a bridge for someone else who is currently in the heat.

Pastoral Insight: Living in the "Calm Power" of the Fire

As your Connection Pastor, I want to remind you that the Refiner is always sitting by the fire. He hasn't abandoned you to the flames; He is carefully watching the process. In ancient times, a refiner knew the silver was pure when he could see his own reflection in it. God is doing the same with you. He is watching over the heat until He sees the reflection of Jesus in your life.

In Memphis, we know that the hottest days often produce the most growth in the fields. The same is true for your soul. Don't bow down to the pressure of the world. Don't let the heat turn into bitterness. Instead, lean into the "Calm Power" that comes from knowing God is in control. Whether you are joining us for our online church services in Memphis or tuning in from across the globe, know that your current season isn't meant to break you: it's meant to make you.

A Prayer for Those in the Furnace

Lord, I thank You that You are the Great Refiner. Right now, the heat feels intense, and the season feels long. But I trust that You are with me in the fire. Burn away the pride, the fear, and the self-reliance. Purify my heart so that I reflect Your image. Give me the strength to not bow down to the pressures around me. I choose to believe that this trial is producing in me a glory that far outweighs the pain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
