Spiritual Warfare: Understanding the Battle and Your Victory in Christ

Spiritual warfare is the ongoing spiritual conflict between God’s kingdom and the forces of darkness. While the battle involves unseen spiritual enemies like Satan and temptation, believers are not fighting for victory, but from a position of victory secured by Jesus Christ. By putting on the full armor of God and relying on the Holy Spirit, we can stand firm against spiritual opposition and live in the freedom Christ provides.
Bible Verses to Anchor Your Heart
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." : Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds." : 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 (NIV)
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." : James 4:7 (NIV)
Understanding the Reality of the Battle
If you’ve ever felt like you were facing an uphill climb that had nothing to do with your physical circumstances, you might have been experiencing spiritual warfare. In the Christian life, we recognize that there is more to our world than what we can see, touch, or hear. There is a spiritual dimension where a real battle is taking place.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe in the authority of Scripture, and the Bible is very clear: we have an adversary. However, spiritual warfare isn’t about living in fear or seeing a demon behind every bush. It’s about being sober-minded and aware. It’s about recognizing that our real "enemy" isn't our boss, our neighbor, or a difficult family member. The real struggle is spiritual.
This battle is two-fold. Externally, there are forces that want to hinder the spread of the Gospel and distract you from your purpose in God. Internally, we face the "flesh": those old habits, selfish desires, and doubts that try to pull us away from the peace of Christ. Understanding this helps us stop fighting the wrong battles with the wrong weapons.

The Strategy of Our Adversary
To stand firm, we have to understand how the opposition works. The Bible describes the enemy primarily as a "deceiver" and an "accuser." He doesn't usually show up with a pitchfork; he shows up with a whisper. He uses lies to make us doubt God’s goodness, distractions to keep us from prayer, and accusations to make us feel unworthy of God’s love.
In our 16 Fundamental Truths, we affirm that man fell into sin, which opened the door to this spiritual struggle. But the good news is that while the enemy is a roaring lion, he is a defeated one. His main tactic is to make you forget who you are in Christ. When you know the Truth, the lies lose their power.
Equipping Yourself: The Armor of God
God hasn't sent us into this battle empty-handed. In Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul uses the imagery of a Roman soldier’s gear to describe the spiritual tools available to every believer. These aren't just metaphors; they are practical ways to live out your faith.
The Belt of Truth: This is the foundation. In a world of "your truth" and "my truth," we hang everything on God's Truth. When we live with integrity and stay grounded in the Word, we aren't easily tripped up.
The Breastplate of Righteousness: This protects your heart. It’s not about how "good" you are, but about the righteousness of Jesus covering you. When the enemy whispers that you aren't enough, this breastplate reminds you that you are right with God because of Jesus.
The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: We are called to stand firm. These shoes give us the stability to face trials without losing our peace. They also remind us to be ready to share the hope we have with others, whether we are at work, at home, or online.
The Shield of Faith: Faith is our protection against the "fiery arrows" of doubt, fear, and temptation. It’s a choice to trust God’s character even when our circumstances look messy.
The Helmet of Salvation: This protects your mind. Most spiritual battles are won or lost in the mind. Knowing you are saved and secure in Christ keeps your thoughts aligned with God’s promises.
The Sword of the Spirit: This is the Word of God. It is our only offensive weapon. Just like Jesus did when He was tempted in the wilderness, we use Scripture to cut through the lies of the enemy.

Victory is Already Yours
The most important thing to remember about spiritual warfare is this: The war is already won.
When Jesus died on the cross and rose again, He disarmed the powers of darkness. We don't fight to get victory; we fight from the victory that Jesus already achieved. This is a core part of what we teach in our Sunday Sermons.
As a Pentecostal ministry, we believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to empower us for this life. You aren't meant to white-knuckle your way through spiritual trials. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you. He provides the wisdom, the strength, and the "calm power" to navigate every season of life.
Whether you are a late-shift worker, a family caregiver, or someone seeking God in a place where it isn't safe to be a Christian, know that God’s presence is boundless. You are never fighting alone.
Practical Steps for Spiritual Victory
Stay in the Word: Read the Bible daily. It’s your manual for the battle. If you're looking for a place to start, join us for our Clarion Call Bible Study.
Keep Praying: Prayer is how we stay connected to our Commander. It’s not about fancy words; it’s about honest conversation with God. You can even post your requests on our Prayer Wall.
Community Matters: Don't be a lone soldier. Stay connected with other believers who can encourage you and stand with you when things get tough.
Submit and Resist: As James 4:7 says, submission to God comes first. When we are aligned with Him, we have the authority to resist the enemy’s influence in our lives.
A Prayer for Your Strength
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You have not left me defenseless. Thank You for the victory I have through Jesus Christ. Today, I choose to put on the full armor of God. I gird myself with Your truth and cover my heart with Your righteousness. Help me to stand firm in the peace that only You can provide. When doubts and fears come, help me to lift up the shield of faith and use Your Word to overcome. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit today, and let Your peace rule in my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
