Staying Safe From Online Church Scams
Sadly, some people use faith to trick others online. Here are plain signs of a church scam and simple steps to stay safe.

Online church is a gift. It lets us worship, pray, and learn together from anywhere. But sadly, some people use the internet to trick others. Some even pretend to be pastors or churches.
This is not a reason to be afraid. It is a reason to be wise. Jesus told His followers, "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." (Matthew 10:16, KJV)
We can keep a kind heart and still be careful. Here are some signs that a message may be a scam.
They ask for money in a hurry. A scammer may say someone is in trouble and needs money right now. A real church will not pressure you to give fast.
They ask for gift cards. This is a big warning sign. Churches do not ask people to buy gift cards and send the numbers.
They message you first, out of the blue. Be careful if a "pastor" sends you a friend request or a private message you did not expect, especially if they quickly ask for help or money.
Something looks a little off. The name may be spelled wrong. The photo may be copied. The account may be brand new.
They ask for private information. Never share your bank details, passwords, or Social Security number in a message.
Simple steps to stay safe
Slow down. You never have to answer right away.
Check with the church. Use the phone number or email listed on the church's official website, not the one in the message.
Give only through the church's official website or giving page.
Ask a trusted friend or family member before you send money.
Report and block accounts that seem fake.
The Bible tells us to test what we hear: "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1, KJV)
If you have been tricked, please do not feel ashamed. It happens to wise and careful people. Tell your bank, tell someone you trust, and let your church pray with you.
God is your protector. Being careful online is one more way to care for the life and resources He has given you.
Reflection question: Who is one trusted person you can check with before you answer a message that asks for money?
