The Strength of Three

Keeping God at the center of a new marriage

If you are newly married, congratulations. You have stepped into one of the most beautiful relationships God ever designed. You have also stepped into something that will stretch you, teach you, and grow you in ways you never expected.

The early years of marriage are full of joy, and they are also full of learning. You are figuring out how to share a home, a budget, a schedule, and a life. You are learning how the other person thinks, what they need, and how they love. That takes time, grace, and a whole lot of patience.

One verse often shared at weddings holds a powerful truth for every season of marriage: "And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12, KJV)

A cord made of two strands can hold. But a cord made of three strands is much stronger. In a Christian marriage, that third strand is God Himself. When a husband and wife both draw close to Him, they naturally draw closer to each other.

So how do you keep God at the center? Start simple. Pray together, even for just a minute before bed. Go to church together. Read a short passage of Scripture together and talk about it. When conflict comes, and it will, invite God into the conversation before you try to win the argument.

Remember that your spouse is not your enemy. You are on the same team. Choose kindness. Say thank you often. Be quick to forgive and quick to ask for forgiveness.

The habits you build now will shape the years ahead. Build them on God, and your marriage will have a foundation that can stand through every storm.

Reflection Question: What is one simple habit you and your spouse can start this week to keep God at the center of your marriage?
