Tech & Faith: How Can Parents Keep Kids Safe in a Digital World?

To keep your kids safe in a digital world, you must move from a strategy of mere surveillance to a strategy of intentional digital discipleship. While filters and monitoring apps are helpful tools, they are not a replacement for a heart-level connection. You protect your children by building a foundation of trust, setting clear biblical boundaries, and teaching them that their identity is found in Jesus Christ: not in the number of likes, views, or followers they receive on a screen.
The digital world is a mission field, and your home is the primary training ground. As parents, we are called to lead our children through the "refining fire" of modern culture without bowing down to its pressures. This means teaching them how to use technology as a tool for God’s glory rather than being used by it.
Bible Verses for Digital Safety
Proverbs 22:6 (ESV): "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
Ephesians 5:15-16 (ESV): "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil."
Psalm 101:3 (ESV): "I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me."
Philippians 4:8 (ESV): "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
Pastoral Insight: The Battle for the Heart
In Memphis and across the globe, we see the same struggle: technology is moving faster than most families can keep up with. It can feel like you’re trying to hold back a flood with a screen door. But here is the good news: God’s Word is timeless, and His Spirit provides the wisdom we need for every "update" the world throws at us.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe in "No Bowing Down." This means we don't let the culture dictate our family’s values. If the culture says kids need unlimited access to every app by age ten, we stand on the truth that stewardship of a child’s soul is more important than their digital "status." We aren't just trying to keep kids away from "bad stuff"; we are trying to lead them toward "Great Stuff": the life-changing presence of Jesus.
Safety isn't just about what you block; it's about what you build. You build a "Refining Fire" in your home when you have the tough conversations, when you set the phone down to pray together, and when you demonstrate that your own life isn't ruled by a blue-light glow.
The Family Digital Covenant
One of the most practical steps you can take is creating a "Family Digital Covenant." This isn't just a list of "don'ts." It’s a shared commitment to honor God with the tools He has placed in our hands. It moves the conversation from "I'm watching you" to "We are walking together."

When you sit down to write this out, include these five core pillars:
Shared Passwords: No secrets in a Christian home. Parents have access to all devices: not to snoop, but to protect.
Common Area Charging: Devices sleep in the kitchen or living room, never in the bedroom. This protects sleep and prevents late-night temptations.
Tech-Free Meal Times: We value faces over screens. Dinner is for discipleship and connection.
Kindness in Comments: Every word typed should reflect the character of Christ. We do not participate in bullying or gossip.
The No-Penalty Truth Rule: If a child sees something "weird," scary, or sexual, they can come to you immediately. If they are honest, there is no punishment: only help. This keeps the lines of communication wide open.
Digital Discipleship: Training the Heart
We have to teach our kids that they are digital citizens of a different Kingdom. The internet wants them to believe they are what they post. Jesus says they are who He says they are: chosen, loved, and redeemed.

When we train the heart, we help them develop "spiritual eyes." We teach them to ask: "Does this app make me more like Jesus? Is this video honoring to God? Am I using my time to build others up or just to entertain myself?" This is how we raise a generation that doesn't just survive the digital age but leads in it.
Tools and Resources for Parents
While the heart is the goal, the "fence" is still necessary. Here are some trusted tools to help you manage the digital environment in your home:
Bark: An AI-powered monitoring tool that alerts you to signs of bullying, depression, or inappropriate content without you having to read every single text.
Net Nanny: One of the best web filters available for families.
Google Family Link / Apple Screen Time: Built-in tools that allow you to set "bedtimes" for devices and approve every app download.
Covenant Eyes: A powerful accountability tool, especially for older teens and adults, that uses screen-monitoring to help stay pure online.
RightNow Media: Think of it as "Christian Netflix." It’s a great way to put "Great Stuff" in front of your kids.
