The Boundless Daily: Day 10 – The Church and Its Mission

It's 2 a.m. on a Tuesday.

You're halfway through your shift at the warehouse, the hospital, or maybe behind the wheel of your truck somewhere between cities.

Everyone else is asleep.

And you're wondering: Does church even fit into my life?

Here's what we've learned after years of ministry in Memphis and connecting with people around the world: The church isn't just a Sunday morning building.

It's a mission.

And you're part of it, even if you've never set foot in a traditional service.

What Is the Church's Mission, Really?

The church exists to do what Jesus told us to do before he left earth.

We call it the Great Commission.

Right before Jesus ascended to heaven, he gave his followers their marching orders:

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20)

That's it.

That's the mission.

Make disciples. Tell people about Jesus. Gather them into communities where they can grow. Help them learn to follow him.

It sounds simple.

But it changes everything.

Three Parts to One Mission

The church's mission breaks down into three connected pieces:

Creating new converts through sharing the gospel.

This is the starting point. People need to hear about Jesus. They need to know that God loves them, that Jesus died for their sins, and that the Holy Spirit can transform their lives.

That happens through conversation, through online messages, through podcasts at 3 a.m., through a coworker who lives differently.

Establishing new communities through local churches.

Once someone meets Jesus, they need a place to belong. A community where they can worship together, learn together, and encourage each other.

This happens in traditional church buildings, yes. But it also happens in living rooms, in online groups, and in creative spaces where believers gather.

Nurturing these communities through teaching and leadership.

New believers need guidance. They need solid biblical teaching. They need mentors who can help them grow.

This is why pastors and leaders exist: not to do all the work, but to equip everyone else to live out their faith.

Why This Matters for You

Maybe you work nights.

Maybe you're caring for a loved one in hospice and can't leave the house.

Maybe you live in a place where going to church could put you in danger.

Here's the good news: The mission of the church doesn't depend on you showing up to a building at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The mission happens wherever believers are.

When you text a coworker about what God's been teaching you: that's the mission.

When you join a Bible study online during your lunch break: that's the mission.

When you pray for your neighbors while you're stocking shelves at 4 a.m.: that's the mission.

The church isn't limited by geography, time zones, or work schedules.

God sends his people everywhere. And everywhere his people go, the mission goes with them.

It's Not Just What We Do: It's Who We Are

Here's something important: The church's missionary nature isn't just one of its activities.

It's part of our identity.

Theologians call it missio Dei: the mission of God.

God the Father sent Jesus.

Jesus and the Father sent the Holy Spirit.

Now the Spirit sends the church.

We're not trying to drum up our own program or build our own empire.

We're joining what God is already doing in the world.

That changes how we think about everything.

Our jobs aren't interruptions to ministry: they're mission fields.

Our neighborhoods aren't just where we sleep: they're places God has sent us.

Our online connections aren't less real than in-person ones: they're part of how the Spirit is reaching people today.

The Memphis Connection

Boundless Online Church started with a simple observation in Memphis:

Thousands of people wanted to connect with God, but traditional church schedules didn't work for them.

Nurses working the night shift at the hospital.

Warehouse workers loading trucks at 11 p.m.

Single parents caring for kids with disabilities.

People who felt too broken, too messy, or too far behind to walk into a church building.

So we asked: What if church came to them?

What if the mission of making disciples could happen through a screen at 2 a.m., through a text message prayer line, through a podcast during a long drive?

That's how Boundless started.

And we've learned that when you remove the barriers, people are hungry for Jesus.

The mission doesn't change. But the methods can adapt.

Digital Church, Real Community

Some people worry that online church isn't "real" church.

We get it.

But here's what we've seen: The mission of the church: making disciples, gathering believers, teaching them to follow Jesus: happens just as powerfully online as it does in person.

Maybe more powerfully, because it reaches people who would never walk into a building.

That said, we never want digital to replace local.

Our goal is to be a bridge.

If you're connecting with us online and you're in Memphis, we want to help you find a local church community where you can worship in person.

If you're somewhere else in the world, we want to help you connect with believers near you.

If you're in a place where that's not safe or possible right now, we want to be your church family until circumstances change.

The mission is bigger than any one model.

It's about making sure every person, everywhere, has access to the gospel and a community of faith.

What This Means Today

So what does the church's mission look like in your life today?

It might mean having a conversation with a coworker about why you have hope.

It might mean joining our Bible Study Club and engaging with other believers online.

It might mean watching our Sunday Live Worship during your break.

It might mean praying for someone you've never met who lives halfway around the world.

The mission doesn't require a title, a stage, or a seminary degree.

It just requires willingness.

God is already at work in the world. He invites us to join him.

Wherever you are: on a loading dock, in a hospital room, behind a computer screen, driving through the night: you're part of the mission.

Tomorrow: Standing Firm

In Day 11, we'll talk about baptism: what it means, why it matters, and how it marks the beginning of your journey with Jesus.

But for today, remember this:

You're not outside the mission because your schedule is unconventional or your circumstances are hard.

You're exactly where God can use you.

The mission of the church is happening everywhere, all the time.

And you're part of it.
