When Jesus Washed Feet
There's a moment in the Gospel of John that changes everything we think we know about greatness.
Jesus, the Son of God, the Creator of the universe, gets down on His knees.
He wraps a towel around His waist and begins washing the dusty, dirty feet of His disciples.
Peter protests. This doesn't make sense. Leaders don't serve like this.
But Jesus says something revolutionary: "I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you" (John 13:15).
Service isn't a side project in the Kingdom of God.
It's the way of Jesus.

The Upside-Down Kingdom
We live in a world that measures success by how many people serve us.
The bigger the platform, the more assistants you have, the more power you hold, that's the ladder everyone's climbing.
But Jesus flipped the script entirely.
"Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave, just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:26-28).
In God's Kingdom, the way up is down.
The path to greatness runs through service.
And it's not about earning favor or building a reputation. It's about reflecting the heart of Jesus.

What Does Real Service Look Like?
Service doesn't always require a stage or a spotlight.
Sometimes it's quiet. Simple. Unseen.
It looks like:
Holding the door for a stranger carrying groceries
Texting a friend who's been on your heart
Volunteering at a food bank on your day off
Listening, really listening, when someone needs to talk
Helping a neighbor with yard work
Praying for someone who'll never know you prayed
Jesus didn't serve for applause. He served because He loved.
And when we serve others, we're not just being nice. We're showing them a glimpse of Jesus.
Paul wrote, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10).
You were made for this.
Service isn't optional in the life of a believer. It's our design.
The Power of Small Acts
You don't have to start a nonprofit or move overseas to make a difference.
Sometimes the most powerful acts of service are the smallest ones.
A cup of cold water given in Jesus' name.
A kind word spoken at the right moment.
A meal delivered to someone who's struggling.
Jesus said, "Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me" (Matthew 25:40).
When you serve others, you're serving Jesus Himself.
Every act of kindness matters. Every gesture of love counts.

Service Flows From Love
Here's the truth: we can't manufacture genuine service on our own.
If we're running on empty, service becomes exhausting. A burden. A box to check.
But when we're connected to Jesus, when we're abiding in Him, service flows naturally.
"As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love" (John 15:9).
We love because He first loved us.
We serve because He first served us.
The more we experience God's grace, the more we want to extend it to others.
That's why spending time with Jesus isn't separate from serving others. It's the fuel.
When you're filled with His love, serving doesn't drain you. It overflows from you.
Start Where You Are
Maybe you're reading this and thinking, "I'm not sure where to start."
That's okay.
Service doesn't require a master plan. It starts with paying attention.
Ask yourself:
Who in my life needs help right now?
What need has God been laying on my heart?
What's one small thing I can do today?
Sometimes God will lead you to big opportunities. Other times, He'll nudge you toward the person standing right in front of you.
Both matter.
The key is being available. Willing. Open to being used by God.
"And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith" (Galatians 6:9-10).

Serving in a Digital World
We live in a unique moment in history.
You can serve people across the globe without leaving your house.
That might look like:
Encouraging someone in an online group
Sharing a helpful resource with a friend who's struggling
Praying for someone who posts a request on social media
Supporting a missionary or ministry financially online
Joining a virtual Bible study to help others grow
The tools have changed, but the heart behind service remains the same.
Boundless Online Church exists to help people meet Jesus and grow in faith, no matter where they are in the world.
Service knows no borders. Love transcends screens.
A Prayer for Today
Jesus, thank You for showing us what true greatness looks like.
You didn't come to be served, but to serve, and to give Your life for us.
Help us follow Your example today.
Open our eyes to the needs around us. Give us hearts that are quick to love and hands that are ready to help.
Remind us that when we serve others, we're serving You.
Fill us with Your Spirit so that service flows from a place of joy, not obligation.
We want to reflect You in everything we do.
In Jesus' name, amen.
If you need prayer or encouragement today, text us at 1-901-213-7341 (message & data rates may apply). Not for emergencies.
