The Boundless Daily: Day 9 – Sanctification

You know that feeling when you're working the night shift and you catch yourself handling a tough situation differently than you would have a year ago?
More patience. Less anger. A little more grace.
That's sanctification at work.
And it's what we're diving into today.
What Sanctification Actually Means
Sanctification sounds like a big church word that belongs in a theology textbook.
But here's what it really is: God making you more like Jesus over time.
That's it.
It's the process of becoming who God created you to be. Not perfect. Not fake. Not trying to white-knuckle your way into being a better person.
It's God's Holy Spirit working in you, day by day, shift by shift, breath by breath.
The word comes from the Greek hagiasmos, which means "holiness" or "set apart." You're being separated from your old way of living and transformed into something new.
And here's the beautiful part: it's not something you do alone.

Three Snapshots of the Journey
Sanctification happens in three movements, and understanding them helps you see where you are right now.
Past: The Starting Line
When you first said yes to Jesus, something happened instantly. You were declared holy. Set apart. Made righteous in God's eyes.
This is justification. It's done. Complete. You can't add to it or take away from it.
You were saved from the penalty of sin.
Present: The Daily Walk
This is where most of us live. The middle. The messy. The everyday grind of choosing God's way over the old way.
This is progressive sanctification. You're being saved from the power of sin.
It's the Holy Spirit working in you while you work the overnight shift. While you're caring for an aging parent. While you're navigating a difficult relationship. While you're dealing with chronic pain.
You're changing. Growing. Becoming.
Future: The Finish Line
One day, when you see Jesus face to face, sanctification will be complete. You'll be fully transformed. Fully healed. Fully restored.
You'll be saved from the very presence of sin.
Until then, you're somewhere in the middle. And that's exactly where you're supposed to be.
What Changes When God's at Work
Sanctification isn't just about behavior modification. It's about transformation from the inside out.
Your Heart Changes
You start wanting different things. Your desires shift. What used to excite you doesn't anymore. What used to bore you becomes beautiful.
You find yourself wanting to love God and love people. Not because you have to. Because you want to.
Your Mind Changes
You start thinking differently. Seeing differently. Understanding differently.
You begin to see the world the way God sees it. You recognize truth. You spot lies. You understand yourself and others with more clarity.
Your Body Will Change
Not yet. But one day.
Sanctification will eventually touch every part of who you are, including your physical body. Complete healing. Complete restoration.
That's the promise. That's where we're headed.

How It Actually Happens
Here's what sanctification is not: you trying really hard to be good enough for God.
Here's what it is: God working in you while you cooperate with Him.
God Does the Heavy Lifting
The Holy Spirit is the one who transforms you. He convicts. He guides. He empowers. He produces the fruit.
You can't manufacture holiness. You can't earn it. You can't force it.
You Respond and Cooperate
But you're not a robot. You have choices.
You choose to read Scripture. You choose to pray. You choose to obey. You choose to say no to the old way and yes to the new way.
You put off the old self. You put on the new self.
God provides the power. You provide the willingness.
It Takes Time
Sanctification is a process, not an event.
You won't wake up tomorrow fully transformed. You won't finish a Bible study and suddenly be perfect.
It's slow. Sometimes frustratingly slow.
But it's steady. Consistent. Faithful.
God finishes what He starts.
What It Looks Like in Real Life
Let's get practical.
You're working third shift at the hospital. A coworker snaps at you for something that wasn't your fault. Six months ago, you would have snapped back. Today, you take a breath and respond with kindness.
That's sanctification.
You're caring for a family member with dementia. It's exhausting. Some days you feel like you're drowning. But you find yourself praying more. Depending on God more. Finding strength you didn't know you had.
That's sanctification.
You're struggling with an addiction. You've relapsed. Again. But instead of giving up, you reach out for help. You confess. You keep moving forward.
That's sanctification.
It's not always dramatic. Most of the time, it's quiet. Subtle. The kind of change that others notice before you do.

The Role of Suffering
Here's something we don't talk about enough: sanctification often happens through hard things.
Suffering has a way of refining us. Of stripping away what doesn't matter. Of revealing what's really in our hearts.
God doesn't waste your pain.
He uses it to shape you. To mold you. To make you more like Jesus, who suffered for you.
This doesn't mean God causes suffering. It means He redeems it. He transforms it. He brings beauty from ashes.
If you're in a hard season right now, know this: God is at work. The Holy Spirit is using even this to grow you. To deepen you. To strengthen you.
You're not alone in it.
The Standard Is Jesus
When we talk about sanctification, we're talking about becoming like Christ.
Jesus is the pattern. The standard. The goal.
Not a list of rules. Not a religious checklist. Not trying to impress people at church.
Jesus.
His character. His love. His humility. His obedience. His trust in the Father.
That's what we're being shaped into.
And the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, working to conform you to His image.
That's a game-changer.
You're Not Done Yet
If you're breathing, God's not finished with you.
Sanctification continues until the day you see Jesus face to face.
You're going to mess up. You're going to stumble. You're going to have days where you feel like you're going backward instead of forward.
That's okay.
Progress, not perfection.
The goal isn't to arrive. The goal is to keep walking. Keep trusting. Keep cooperating with what the Holy Spirit is doing in you.
God is patient with you. He's not giving up. He's not frustrated. He's not surprised by your struggles.
He's committed to finishing the work He started in you.
And He will.

Keep Moving Forward
Sanctification is both a gift and a journey.
You don't earn it. You receive it. And then you walk it out, one day at a time.
So if you're working the night shift tonight, know that God is at work in you. If you're caring for someone, changing bedpans and missing sleep, know that you're being transformed. If you're in a season of suffering, know that nothing is wasted.
The Holy Spirit is faithful.
And He's making you more like Jesus every single day.
