Have you ever felt like you were called to do something big, but you didn't quite have the right tools in your belt?
We’ve all been there.
Whether it's trying to fix a leaky faucet without a wrench or starting a new project without a clear plan, the lack of resources can be frustrating.
In the Kingdom of God, we have a massive mission.
At Boundless Online Church, we often talk about our core purpose: We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.
But how do we actually do that? How does a stay-at-the-home parent, a late-shift worker, or someone living in a remote area contribute to a global movement?
The answer lies in the gifts of the Spirit.
These aren't just "nice-to-have" extras. They are the essential tools for the modern mission.
Understanding the Mission
Before we look at the tools, we have to look at the job site.
In the Assemblies of God, our ninth Fundamental Truth focuses on The Church and Its Mission.
It reminds us that the Church is the "Body of Christ." We aren't just a social club or a weekly gathering. We are a living, breathing expression of Jesus on earth.
Our mission is three-fold:
To be an agency of God for evangelizing the world.
To be a corporate body in which man may worship God.
To be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son.
That’s a big job description!
To fulfill this mission: especially in a world that is increasingly digital and disconnected: we need more than human talent. We need spiritual empowerment.

What Are Spiritual Gifts?
Spiritual gifts are extraordinary powers given by the Holy Spirit to followers of Jesus.
The most important thing to remember is that these are gifts.
They aren't earned through long hours of service, and they aren't awarded based on how long you’ve been a Christian. They are divinely bestowed abilities, freely given by God according to His sovereign choice.
In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul makes it clear that while there are different kinds of gifts, they all come from the same Spirit.
Think of it like a single source of light that hits a prism.
The light is one, but it breaks off into a beautiful spectrum of colors. Each color has a different frequency and a different purpose, but they all originate from the same light.
Tools for the Common Good
One of the biggest misconceptions about spiritual gifts is that they are for the individual.
We might think, "I have the gift of prophecy so I can feel special," or "I have the gift of healing so I can be famous."
But Scripture tells a different story.
"To each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7).
The gifts are tools meant to build up the Church and reach the lost. They are meant for service, not for status.
When you use your gift, you are acting as an ambassador of Christ. You are helping to fulfill the mission of seeking and saving the lost.
Proclamation Gifts: Strengthening the Faith
In the modern mission, communication is everything.
Gifts like prophecy, teaching, and exhortation are tools of proclamation.
They help us communicate the truth of the Gospel in ways that resonate with people's hearts. In an era of "fake news" and digital noise, the gift of teaching allows us to provide clarity and depth.
If you find yourself able to explain complex biblical truths in a way that makes sense to a seeker, you might be using a tool of proclamation.
Compassion Gifts: Meeting the Need
The mission isn't just about what we say; it's about what we do.
Gifts like mercy, healing, and giving address the suffering and material needs of the world.
For the person in a hospice facility or the caregiver who is exhausted, a word of mercy or an act of supernatural kindness is a lifeline.
These gifts show the world that God isn't just a theory: He is a Father who cares about our pain.

The Gift of Discernment in a Tech-Driven World
As we navigate the modern mission field, technology provides incredible opportunities.
We can reach people in closed nations and connect with shift workers in the middle of the night.
However, the digital world also comes with its own set of challenges. This is where the gift of discernment becomes vital.
Discernment allows the Church to distinguish God’s guidance from deception.
It helps parents protect their families as they navigate the internet, and it helps leaders guide their communities away from false teachings.
In the modern mission, being "tech-savvy" is good, but being "Spirit-discerned" is essential for safety and growth.
Service and Leadership: Organizing the Work
The mission requires coordination.
Gifts of administration and leadership are often overlooked, but they are the "connective tissue" of the Body of Christ.
They help organize the work so that every member can function effectively.
Whether it's managing a World Ministries and Mission Leaders group or coordinating volunteers, these gifts ensure that the Church’s resources are used wisely for the glory of God.

Activating Your Gift
You might be wondering, "How do I know what my gift is?"
The best way to find out is to get involved in the mission.
Gifts are rarely discovered in isolation. They are discovered in action.
When you step out to serve, you’ll begin to notice where the Holy Spirit "breathes" on your efforts.
Do you feel a particular burden for those who are hurting? (Mercy/Healing)
Do you have a knack for organizing messy situations? (Administration)
Do you find yourself naturally encouraging people who are ready to give up? (Exhortation)

A Call to Ministry Leaders
For those of you in leadership, your role is to be a "tool-distributor."
Your job isn't to do all the work yourself, but to empower the people in your care to use their spiritual gifts.
When we allow the Holy Spirit to distribute His gifts as He sees fit, the Church becomes a powerhouse of modern mission.
We stop being a "one-man show" and start being a "multi-gifted movement."
Your Next Steps
The mission is big, but you aren't alone.
The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit who provides the tools you need today.
Whether you are a seasoned leader or someone who is new and just checking things out, there is a place for you in this mission.
Don't let your tools sit in the box.
Sharpen them. Use them.
The world is waiting to see the "manifestation of the Spirit" through your life.
Do you have questions about how to identify or use your spiritual gifts?
We’d love to hear from you.
Reach out, join a group, and let’s grow in this mission together.
