The Joy of Service: Serving Christ Through Others

Serving others is one of the clearest ways I live out the love of Jesus, and according to Matthew 25:40, it is also one of the clearest ways I serve Christ Himself. Real service is not about earning approval. It is about loving people well, reflecting Jesus, and finding deep joy in faithful obedience.

Have you ever helped someone and walked away feeling like you were the one who received a gift? That warm, full feeling in your chest: that's the joy of service. It's one of the most beautiful paradoxes of faith: when we give, we receive. When we serve others, we're actually serving Christ Himself.

Welcome home, friend. Whether you're new to the Boundless community or you've been walking this journey with us for a while, today we're diving into something that can transform not just your faith, but your entire outlook on life.

Let's explore how serving others can become one of the most joy-filled parts of your spiritual journey.

Bible Study: Matthew 25:40 : Seeing Christ in Everyone

Collage of Church Life

Our anchor verse today comes straight from Jesus's own words:

"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'" : Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

Take a moment to let that sink in. Jesus isn't saying service is like serving Him. He's saying when you help someone in need: when you offer a meal, a listening ear, a ride, or even just a smile: you are literally serving Christ.

This changes everything, doesn't it?

That coworker who's struggling? That's Jesus asking for encouragement. The elderly neighbor who needs help with groceries? That's Jesus inviting you into relationship. The stranger who seems invisible to everyone else? That's Jesus waiting to be seen.

Reflection Questions for Your Bible Study:

  1. When was the last time you served someone without expecting anything in return?

  2. How might your daily interactions change if you truly saw Christ in every person you met?

  3. What barriers (time, energy, fear) keep you from serving more freely?

The beautiful thing about this passage is that it removes all excuses about qualification. You don't need a ministry degree. You don't need to be "further along" in your faith. You simply need to show up with a willing heart.

Why Service Brings Joy (Not Depletion)

Here's something the world gets wrong about serving: they think it drains you. They picture exhaustion, burnout, and endless sacrifice with nothing to show for it.

But Jesus offers us a different picture entirely.

Service that flows from Christ's love is "messy, rewarding, exhausting, and joy-filled all at once." It shifts our focus from self-interest to genuine care for others. And here's the paradox Jesus taught: "It is more blessed to give than to receive."

When we serve others:

  • We stay grounded : Service keeps us connected to what really matters

  • Our empathy grows : We begin to understand others' struggles

  • Joy fills us : Not the fleeting happiness of getting, but the deep satisfaction of giving

  • Our faith becomes visible : Actions speak louder than any sermon we could preach

Serving others reminds us that life is fundamentally about relationships and love rather than material accumulation. When we pour out in healthy, Christ-centered ways, God meets us with grace, wisdom, and strength. Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails.

Life Hack: The Service Snapshot

Ready for a practical way to build a habit of service? Try the Service Snapshot.

Here's how it works:

Why does this work? Because it creates accountability, builds community, and inspires others to serve too. When someone in our Boundless family sees your act of kindness, it might be exactly the encouragement they need to step out and serve someone in their own life.

Small acts of service, multiplied across our community, create waves of Christ's love that reach further than we'll ever know.

Movie Review: 'Pay It Forward' : Small Acts, Big Impact

Illustration of a diverse Memphis community joining hands in acts of kindness, symbolizing the ripple effect of Christian service.

If you're looking for a film that beautifully illustrates the ripple effect of service and kindness, add 'Pay It Forward' (2000) to your watchlist.

The movie follows a young boy named Trevor who creates a social studies project with a simple but revolutionary idea: instead of paying back a favor, pay it forward to three new people. Each person helped must then help three others, creating an exponential chain of kindness.

What makes this film powerful for believers:

  • It shows how one person's choice to serve can transform entire communities

  • It demonstrates that children can lead the way in radical love

  • It reminds us that we never know the full impact of our actions

  • It illustrates how kindness conquers cynicism and despair

While the film has its heartbreaking moments, its core message aligns beautifully with Matthew 25:40. Every act of service matters. Every kindness counts. You might never see the full chain reaction of love you set in motion: but God sees it all. If you choose to watch it, I recommend using a family-safe filter option like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way,” and I also encourage online safety and accountability tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes.

Family Discussion Questions After Watching:

  • What would happen if our Boundless community started a "pay it forward" challenge?

  • Who in your life might need someone to "pay it forward" to them this week?

  • How does Trevor's faith in people reflect Christ's faith in us?

Practical Ways to Serve Right Where You Are

Worship Service

You don't need to travel across the world to serve: though that's beautiful too. Service starts exactly where you are, with exactly what you have.

Top 5 Ways to Serve This Week:

  1. Reach out to someone who's been quiet : A text, a call, or a video chat can remind someone they're not forgotten

  2. Serve at your local church or mission : Soup kitchens, children's ministries, and outreach programs always need helping hands

  3. Offer practical help to a neighbor : Yard work, grocery runs, or just sitting and listening

  4. Mentor or encourage someone younger in faith : Your experience matters more than you realize

  5. Volunteer your skills : Whether you're good with numbers, tech, cooking, or conversation, there's a place for your gifts

Jesus demonstrated servant leadership by washing His disciples' feet and telling them, "Do as I have done for you." This wasn't just for pastors or missionaries: it's for all of us. The Bible teaches that everyone is called to serve God by serving others.

Your Daily Affirmation

Speak this over yourself today:

"I find joy in serving others as if serving Christ."

Write it on a sticky note. Set it as your phone wallpaper. Let it become the lens through which you see every interaction this week.

You are never forgotten. You are never alone. You are deeply loved by God: and you carry that love to everyone you serve.
