The Joy of Serving: Finding Purpose in Giving

Serving others helps me live out the love of Jesus in practical ways, and it often brings deeper joy, stronger purpose, and healthier connection than self-focused living ever can. Galatians 5:13 reminds me that Christian freedom is not just about what I am free from, but how I am free to love, serve, and care for people humbly.

Happy Tuesday, friend. Today, I want to lean into something that can transform everyday life in quiet but powerful ways: the gift of serving others.

Have you ever noticed how good it feels to help someone? That warmth in your chest when you hold the door open for a stranger, or the smile that spreads across your face when you surprise a friend with coffee? That is not just a coincidence. It reflects part of how God designed us. We were created to love people well, and serving is one of the clearest ways that love becomes visible.

The Christian life is not meant to be lived in isolation. We are built for connection, for community, and for pouring into each other’s lives. So grab your favorite cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s explore how serving others can bring deep joy and lasting purpose.

Bible Study: Galatians 5:13

Galatians 5:13 Patriotic Graphic

Let's start with God's Word. In Galatians 5:13, the Apostle Paul writes:

"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."

What a powerful verse! Paul is reminding us that our freedom in Christ isn't a license to live selfishly: it's actually an invitation to love others through service. The word "humbly" here is so important. It means putting others first, getting low so they can be lifted up, and finding joy in the act of giving itself rather than in recognition.

Think about that for a moment. God gave us freedom so we could serve. That might sound backwards to the world, but it's the upside-down kingdom of Jesus. In His economy, the last are first. The servants are the leaders. And those who give the most receive the most in return: not in material things, but in purpose, fulfillment, and deep, lasting joy.

Reflection Questions:

  • How has your freedom in Christ changed the way you view serving others?

  • Is there someone in your life right now who could use your humble service?

  • What holds you back from serving more freely?

The Science Behind the Joy of Serving

Here's something fascinating: science actually confirms what the Bible has taught for thousands of years. When you serve others, your brain releases what researchers call "the fantastic four" hormones:

  1. Endorphins – These create feelings of euphoria and can even reduce physical pain

  2. Dopamine – This boosts your mood and motivation

  3. Oxytocin – This strengthens social bonds and makes you feel connected

  4. Serotonin – This enhances self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment

This is why people talk about experiencing a "helper's high" after acts of kindness. Your brain is literally rewarding you for doing what God designed you to do!

But here's what really matters: the research shows that these benefits are strongest when your motivation is genuine. When you serve because you truly want to help: not to look good or get something in return: that's when the transformation happens. It's about authentic love, just like Jesus modeled for us.

Studies also show that people who consistently help others experience better mood, higher self-esteem, greater life satisfaction, and some research even suggests they may live longer! Serving also reduces stress by lowering cortisol levels, combats loneliness, and can even help with depression and anxiety.

God knew what He was doing when He called us to serve. It's not just good for others: it's good for us.

Tuesday Life Hack: The Random Act of Kindness

Here's your actionable tip for this week, and it's beautifully simple:

Identify one person in your life who needs a lift and do something small for them today.

That's it. No grand gestures required. No elaborate planning needed. Just one person. One small act of kindness.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Send an encouraging text to someone who's been on your heart

  • Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the drive-thru

  • Write a handwritten note of appreciation to a coworker or family member

  • Call that friend you haven't talked to in a while just to check in

  • Offer to help a neighbor with yard work or errands

  • Leave a generous tip and a kind note for your server

  • Donate items you no longer need to someone who could use them

The beauty of random acts of kindness is that they create a ripple effect. When you brighten someone's day, they're more likely to brighten someone else's. You might never know the full impact of your small act: but God does.

I encourage everyone at Boundless to make this a daily practice. Imagine if every member of our community committed to one act of kindness each day. We could change someone’s world, one small moment at a time.

Movie Review: Hacksaw Ridge

If you are looking for a powerful example of serving others and staying true to your faith, Hacksaw Ridge (2016) tells the true story of Desmond Doss, a U.S. Army medic during World War II who refused to carry a weapon because of his Christian convictions.

His fellow soldiers ridiculed him. His commanding officers tried to force him out. But Desmond held firm to what he believed. During one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific theater, he repeatedly went back into danger to help save lives. One of the most memorable lines in the film is his prayer, “Lord, help me get one more.”

What a picture of servant leadership. Desmond did not serve for applause. He served because conviction, courage, and compassion shaped his choices. His story connects deeply with Galatians 5:13 and reminds me that love often looks like sacrifice.

If you choose to watch it, I recommend using a family-safe clean version through VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way.” For online safety and accountability, I also recommend Bark and Covenant Eyes. Please note: this film contains intense war scenes.
