The Sovereignty of God: Peace in Global Uncertainty

Does it ever feel like the world is spinning just a little too fast?

You pick up your phone, scroll for two minutes, and suddenly your chest feels tight.

There are headlines about global conflicts, economic shifts, and things happening thousands of miles away that somehow feel like they are sitting right on your front porch.

If you’ve been feeling anxious about the state of the world lately, I want you to know something important:

You aren’t alone. And more importantly, you don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.

That’s not your job.

At Boundless Online Church, we spend a lot of time talking about how to find peace in a digital, often chaotic age. Today, I want to lean into a truth that has anchored believers for thousands of years.

It’s the concept of God’s sovereignty.

What We Mean by "The One True God"

In our community, we look to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God to keep our compass pointed in the right direction.

Truth #2 is about the "One True God."

It tells us that the Lord has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM." He is the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind.

But what does that actually mean when you’re looking at a scary news notification?

It means that there is a "Primary Cause" behind everything. While humans have free will and the world can be messy, nothing catches God by surprise. He isn't reacting to the news. He isn't biting His nails wondering how things will turn out.

He is the supreme ruler. He has complete authority.

When we say God is sovereign, we are saying He is the King. And not just a figurehead king, but a King who is actively sustaining the world moment by moment.

The Weight We Weren't Meant to Carry

Think about it this way: for most of human history, people only knew what was happening in their own village.

Maybe they heard news from the next town over a few days later.

Today, we have "global awareness" in our pockets 24/7. We see every crisis, every tragedy, and every rumor of war in real-time.

Our brains and our souls weren't necessarily designed to carry the grief of eight billion people at once.

It’s no wonder anxiety levels are through the roof.

When we lose sight of God’s sovereignty, we start to feel like the pilot has left the cockpit. We feel like we have to figure everything out, protect everyone, and solve global issues from our living rooms.

But when we lean into the truth of the One True God, we realize the cockpit isn't empty.

Finding Peace in the "I AM"

There’s a beautiful calm that comes from understanding that God is the "I AM."

He exists outside of time. He sees the beginning from the end.

In Isaiah 45:5-7, God says, "I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God... I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things."

Now, that might sound intense at first. But for a believer, it’s actually the ultimate comfort.

It means that even the "darkness" or the "disaster" is not outside of His reach. He can work through it. He can redeem it. He can use it for a purpose that we might not see yet.

If God is the One True God, then no world leader, no economic collapse, and no global shift is more powerful than Him.

He is the anchor.

Shifting Your Focus

So, how do we actually live this out? How do we stop the "doom-scrolling" and start trusting?

It starts with a shift in focus.

Instead of asking, "What if this happens?" we start asking, "Who is in control?"

  1. Limit the Noise: It’s okay to stay informed, but you don’t need a minute-by-minute update on global chaos. Give your soul some breathing room.

  2. Read the Word: If you want to see God’s track record, look at the Bible. He has a 100% success rate in looking after His people through famines, wars, and exile.

  3. Connect with Community: Isolation makes anxiety grow. Talking through these things with others who are also trying to follow Jesus can change your whole perspective.

We have a great community over at our Bible Study Club where we dive into these truths together. It’s a safe place to ask questions and find some solid ground.

If you’re a guy looking for a more specific space to talk about leadership and faith in these times, you can check out the Bible Study for Men.

The Ocean Under the Sky

Imagine a vast, clear sky over a calm ocean.

The surface of the water might have some ripples. Occasionally, a storm might blow through and create some big waves.

But if you go deep enough, down into the depths of that ocean, it is perfectly still. The chaos on the surface doesn't change the peace at the bottom.

God’s sovereignty is like those depths.

The "surface" of our world is definitely choppy right now. It’s loud and it’s moving fast. But your soul doesn't have to live on the surface.

You can anchor yourself in the character of the One True God.

A Simple Prayer for Uncertain Times

If you’re feeling the weight today, maybe take a moment to pray something like this:

"Lord, I admit that I’m worried. The world feels out of control, and it’s making me anxious. But I choose to believe that You are the One True God. I believe You are sovereign over every nation and every heart. Help me to trust You more than I trust the news. Give me Your peace that passes understanding. Amen."

We believe that peace isn't the absence of trouble; it's the presence of God.

And because He is boundless, His peace can reach you exactly where you are, whether you're on a late-night shift, at home with the kids, or just trying to get through the workday.

Let’s Walk Together

You don't have to figure out global theology or navigate world events on your own. We are all learning how to follow Jesus in this digital age together.

If you're new around here, we'd love to meet you. You can jump into our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center to say hi and ask any questions you have about our community or what we believe.

And if you’re looking for some resources to help keep your mind centered, we have a variety of books and even some apparel in our store that serve as great reminders of God's presence.

Remember: The world is in His hands. And that means you are, too.

Stay encouraged.

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.
