The Sunday Prep Ritual: Your Home as a Sanctuary

I'll be honest with you, when I first started streaming worship services online, I treated it like background noise. I'd have my laptop open on the kitchen counter while doing dishes, or I'd tune in from bed with my phone propped up on a pillow. And you know what? It felt like I was just… watching a video. Nothing more.
But something shifted when I realized I wasn't honoring the moment. I wasn't preparing my heart or my space for worship. I was just consuming content, and worship is so much more than that.
That's when I started developing what I now call The Sunday Prep Ritual, a simple but intentional way to turn my living room (or wherever I am) into a sanctuary. And I want to share it with you today, because whether you're joining us at Boundless Online Church or searching for "church near me" or "assembly of god memphis," this practice will transform how you experience worship from home.

Why Your Environment Matters
Here's what I've learned: the space around you shapes the worship within you.
When your phone is buzzing, the TV is on in the background, and you're half-dressed in pajamas with a bowl of cereal in your lap, it's really hard to shift into a posture of reverence. There's nothing wrong with any of those things on their own, but they don't exactly scream "sacred moment."
God doesn't need a fancy cathedral to meet with you. He's happy to show up in your living room, your kitchen, even your car. But you need a little help getting into the right headspace. And that's what this ritual is all about, creating an atmosphere that says, "I'm ready. I'm here. Let's do this."
Biblical Affirmation:"Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Before you can worship fully, you have to pause, breathe, and prepare your heart to receive.
The 5-Step Sunday Prep Ritual
Let me walk you through the five simple steps I use every Sunday morning. You can adapt them to fit your life, your space, and your schedule. The goal isn't perfection, it's intention.
Step 1: Silence the Noise
This is the most important step, and it's also the hardest. About 10 minutes before the service starts, I silence my phone. Not vibrate, silence. I flip it face-down or tuck it in a drawer. I turn off the TV. I close the laptop if I'm not streaming from it.
I know, I know. What if someone needs you? What if there's an emergency? Friend, for 60-90 minutes, the world can wait. And if it truly can't, they'll find a way to reach you. But most of the time, those notifications can wait. Your time with God cannot.
This one step alone will change everything. When you remove the distractions, you make room for the Holy Spirit to move.

Step 2: Set the Scene
Now it's time to create your physical sanctuary. This doesn't have to be elaborate. I'm not asking you to light a hundred candles or redecorate your entire living room. But a few small touches can make a huge difference.
Here's what I do:
Light a candle. Something about a flickering flame just feels sacred. It reminds me that I'm stepping into something different, something holy.
Grab my journal. I keep a worship journal where I jot down notes during the message, prayers, and anything God lays on my heart. Having it ready signals to my brain, "We're doing this."
Clear the clutter. I don't need the coffee table to be spotless, but I do take a quick 60 seconds to move dirty dishes, random mail, and yesterday's laundry out of my line of sight. A clear space helps create a clear mind.
Get comfortable. I sit somewhere I can focus, not sprawled out on the couch where I might fall asleep, but not rigid in a hard chair either. Comfortable but alert.
These little actions might seem trivial, but they're signaling to your heart: This matters. This is important. I'm preparing to meet with God.
Step 3: Pray Before You Play
Before I hit "play" on the livestream, I take a minute to pray. Nothing fancy. Just a simple invitation:
"God, I'm here. Speak to me today. Open my heart, quiet my mind, and help me worship You in spirit and in truth. Amen."
That's it. But that one prayer shifts everything. It reminds me that I'm not just tuning in to watch a performance, I'm entering into a conversation with the Creator of the universe.
If you're joining us at Boundless, you can hop into our live chat or video feature before the service starts and connect with our team or other worshipers. Praying together, even digitally, is powerful. We're a global family, and when you pray, you're not alone.

Step 4: Engage Fully
Okay, the service has started. Now what?
Here's where a lot of people miss the mark: they watch passively. They sit there like they're binge-watching Netflix. But worship isn't a spectator sport.
So here's what I do:
Stand during worship. Yes, even at home. There's something about standing that engages your body and your spirit. If you can't stand for physical reasons, that's totally fine, just find a way to be physically present. Lift your hands. Close your eyes. Sing along.
Take notes during the message. Don't just listen, interact. Write down verses, questions, things that resonate. When you engage your mind and your hands, the message sticks.
Respond in real-time. If the pastor asks a question, answer it (out loud if you're comfortable). If there's a moment for prayer, pray. If there's a call to action, take it. Don't wait until "later." Later rarely comes.
At Boundless, we offer 24/7 live chat and video so you can connect with pastors and prayer teams in real-time. If something hits you during the service: a question, a struggle, a breakthrough: reach out. That's what we're here for.
Step 5: Linger in the Moment
Here's the step most people skip: the cool-down.
When the service ends, don't immediately jump up and check your phone. Don't rush off to start Sunday errands. Take five minutes to sit in the silence. Reflect. Journal. Pray. Let the message marinate.
I like to ask myself three questions:
What did God say to me today?
What am I going to do about it?
Who can I share this with?
Then I take that forward into my week. Sunday worship isn't just a one-hour event: it's the launchpad for the next six days.

What If I Don't Have a Home Church?
If you're reading this and thinking, I don't have a home church. I've been searching for "church near me" or "assembly of god memphis," but I haven't found the right fit: I want you to know that Boundless Online Church was created for you.
We're a global community, and membership is always free. We offer:
Live worship services with real-time chat and video connection
24/7 ministry and pastoral support
Small groups for every stage of life
Bible studies, podcasts, and training resources
A prayer and praise board where you can share your needs and celebrate your wins
A searchable directory to help you find a physical church near you (with a VIP handoff if you want to visit in person)
You don't have to do this faith thing alone. Whether you're homebound, unchurched, or just exploring, you're welcome here. No judgment. No pressure. Just love.
You're Never Alone
One more thing before I wrap this up: I know that for some of you, Sunday mornings are hard. Maybe you're dealing with chronic illness and can't make it to a physical building. Maybe you're a night-shift worker and Sunday mornings are when you sleep. Maybe you're feeling disconnected, forgotten, or like you don't fit anywhere.
I want you to hear this: You are never forgotten. You are never alone. You are deeply loved by God.
And that's not just a nice sentiment: it's the foundation of everything we do at Boundless. We're here for the ones who've been overlooked, the ones who don't fit the mold, the ones who are searching for a place to belong.
Your living room can be a sanctuary. Your kitchen table can be an altar. Your car can be a chapel. And when you prepare your space and your heart with intention, worship becomes more than something you watch: it becomes something you live.
Let's Do This Together
So here's my challenge for you: try the Sunday Prep Ritual this week. All five steps. See what happens. And then let me know how it goes. Drop a comment, send a message, or hop into our live chat at Boundless. I'd love to hear your story.
And if you found this helpful, I'd love for you to like, share, and subscribe. Let's build a community of worshipers who are committed to showing up: not just physically, but spiritually: every single week.
You've got this. And more importantly, you've got God. Let's make your home a sanctuary.
