Hey friends, it's Dr. Layne McDonald here, Online and Connection Pastor at FA Memphis and Boundless Online Church.
Let's talk about something that's been on my heart lately.
Technology and faith.
For some, those two words feel like they're at war with each other. Like they can't possibly coexist.
But here's the truth: when we use tech thoughtfully and intentionally, it becomes one of the most powerful tools we have to spread the message of Jesus.
Not a replacement for human connection.
Not a shortcut around discipleship.
A tool.
And today, I want to walk you through everything you need to know about using technology to reach more hearts for Jesus, without losing your mind or your mission in the process.
You Don't Need to Be a Tech Expert
Let me start by saying this loud and clear:
You don't need to be tech-savvy to do digital ministry.
Digital ministry is simply ministry that happens online. It's using intentional tools to connect with people where they already are, on their phones, on their computers, in their living rooms.
You don't need to master every platform.
You don't need the fanciest equipment.
You just need to start simple and stay faithful to your mission.

The foundation of everything we do with technology at Boundless Online Church is this:
Does it align with Scripture? Does it help us share the Gospel?
If the answer is yes, we move forward.
If the answer is no, we let it go.
Technology should serve your mission. Not the other way around.
Essential Tools You Can Use Today
Let's get practical.
Here are the tools that can transform your ministry reach right now: tools you probably already have access to:
Communication & Connection
Text and Email
Simple. Powerful. Personal.
Use text messages and emails to encourage your congregation, follow up with guests, and remind people they're seen and loved.
A quick "thinking of you today" text can change someone's entire week.
Video Calling Apps
Zoom. FaceTime. Google Meet.
These apps have revolutionized how we connect. Virtual small groups, prayer meetings, counseling sessions: all possible from anywhere in the world.
We've seen people in different states, different countries, join together for worship because of these tools.
Church Websites
Your website is your digital front door.
It's where people find sermons, resources, connection opportunities, and community. Make it welcoming. Make it simple. Make it accessible.
At Boundless Online Church, we've built our entire online presence around being easy to access and easy to engage with.
Scripture & Learning Tools
Bible Apps
YouVersion. Logos. Blue Letter Bible.
These apps put Scripture at people's fingertips. Highlighting. Audio versions. Reading plans.
They make God's Word accessible in ways previous generations couldn't have imagined.
Podcasts
People learn while they commute, cook dinner, or go for a walk.
Podcasts meet people in those everyday moments. Check out our Connected Faith Podcast to see how we're using this medium to share biblical truth.
Online Courses
Discipleship training doesn't have to happen only in a physical classroom.
Platforms like Coursera, Thinkific, or even simple video uploads give you the ability to teach and train people at their own pace, on their own time.

How Technology Enhances Core Ministry Functions
Technology doesn't replace ministry.
It amplifies it.
Here's how:
Gospel Sharing
Technology helps pastors prepare better messages, create better teaching content, and reach people who might never walk through a church door.
We can share sermon clips, devotionals, and biblical encouragement across platforms: meeting people exactly where they are.
Engagement
Virtual connection allows us to touch lives more frequently.
A Monday morning encouragement email. A Wednesday evening prayer text. A Friday video devotional.
These touchpoints build relationship and keep people connected to the body of Christ even when life gets busy.
Discipleship
Digital platforms let us track spiritual engagement in healthy ways: not to manipulate, but to care well.
We can send personalized messages, provide targeted resources, and offer pastoral care that's timely and relevant.
If someone's struggling, we know. If someone's growing, we celebrate.
Technology helps us shepherd better.
Your Implementation Strategy
Before you adopt any new technology, ask these questions:
Does it align with Scripture?
If a tool or platform contradicts biblical truth or pulls people away from godly community, it's not worth it.
Does it build up or tear down?
Technology should strengthen your church community, not replace it. It should encourage face-to-face connection, not eliminate it.
Can we use it with integrity?
Remain committed to theological truth. Don't compromise your message to chase trends or algorithms.
Here's what this looks like practically:
Start with one tool. Master it. Then add another.
Don't try to be everywhere at once.
Be excellent in one place, then expand.
At Boundless, we started with text messages and video calls. Then we added a website. Then podcasts. Then blogs and resources.
One step at a time.
One tool at a time.
One heart reached at a time.

Special Considerations for Families
If you're a parent, listen closely.
Technology can be a powerful tool for good: but only when used wisely.
Before your kids get their first device, pray over it.
Have conversations about healthy screen time: without shame, without fear.
Create a culture in your home where technology serves your family's mission, not the other way around.
Here are some practical tips:
Set screen-free zones (dinner table, bedrooms)
Model healthy tech habits yourself
Use parental controls and accountability apps
Talk openly about what they see online
Point them to biblical content and resources

The Bottom Line
Technology has shifted from a secondary tool to a primary role in ministry.
But that doesn't mean we need to become tech gurus overnight.
It just means we need to take intentional steps toward connection: using simple tools that are available right now.
The Gospel message hasn't changed.
The methods of delivery have.
And that's okay.
Jesus met people where they were: at wells, in homes, on hillsides.
Today, people are online.
So we go there too.
Not to replace the gathered church.
Not to skip the hard work of discipleship.
But to reach more hearts for Jesus.
And that's what this is all about.
