The Word as a Lamp: Trusting the Bible

Have you ever tried to walk through a dark room?

Even in a familiar place, things change when the lights go out.

The furniture seems to move.

The corners feel deeper.

You find yourself reaching out, hoping to touch something solid.

Life often feels like that dark room.

One day, you have a clear plan.

The next day, a global event or a personal crisis turns off the lights.

You feel stuck.

You aren't sure where to put your feet next.

This is why we talk about the Bible.

It isn't just an old book of history.

It is a lamp.

The Light for Your Feet

In the book of Psalms, there is a famous line.

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105).

In our world today, we have massive stadium lights.

We have high-powered flashlights that can cut through a forest for miles.

But when this Psalm was written, a "lamp" was something different.

It was a small clay lantern called a ner.

It held a single wick and a little bit of oil.

It didn't light up the whole horizon.

It only lit up the space right in front of the person carrying it.

A man holding a clay lamp at dawn, illustrating how the Bible guides our next steps.

This is how God often guides us.

He doesn't always show us the ending of the story.

He doesn't always explain what will happen ten years from now.

He gives us enough light for the next step.

He gives us enough truth for today.

Why We Trust the Bible

At Boundless Online Church, we hold to a core belief.

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God.

It is our final authority.

This is the first of the 16 Fundamental Truths we follow.

But what does "inspired" actually mean?

It means God breathed His truth into human authors.

It means that while men wrote the words, the message came from the heart of God.

Because it comes from God, it is reliable.

People change their minds.

Trends come and go.

The news cycle shifts every hour.

But the Word of God stays the same.

It is a solid place to stand when the rest of the world feels like shifting sand.

An open Bible resting on a rock by the sea, symbolizing the unchanging Word of God as a foundation.

Living in a Dark World

We live in a world that can feel heavy.

Maybe you are a late-shift worker, sitting in a quiet break room.

Maybe you are a caregiver, exhausted by the demands of the day.

Maybe you are in a part of the world where following Jesus is dangerous.

The darkness isn't just physical.

It is the confusion of not knowing who to trust.

It is the fear of "what comes next?"

Without a guide, we stumble.

We make choices based on emotion or pressure.

We lose our way.

The Bible acts as a spiritual compass.

It reveals the character of God.

It shows us how to treat our neighbors.

It teaches us how to find peace in the midst of global conflict.

When we read the Word, the "room" starts to clear.

We see the obstacles before we trip over them.

More Than Just Information

A lamp is useless if it stays on the shelf.

It has to be lit.

It has to be carried.

Trusting the Bible is an active choice.

It isn't about just owning a Bible or having a Bible app on your phone.

It is about engaging with it.

Jesus said that we don’t live by bread alone.

We live by every word that comes from God.

Think about that.

The Word is spiritual food.

It sustains you.

It gives you the strength to keep going when you are tired.

How do you start?

You don't have to be a scholar.

You don't need a degree in theology.

You just need a willing heart.

Start with a few verses.

Read them slowly.

Ask God, "What are you showing me today?"

A Lamp for the Family

Trusting the Bible isn't just for individuals.

It is for our homes.

If you are a parent, you know the world is loud.

There are so many voices telling your children how to think and act.

The Bible provides a foundation for the family.

It gives you a shared language of hope.

For example, looking at Psalm 23 can help a child understand that they are never alone.

It helps a family navigate grief or change.

When the Bible is the lamp for your home, the path forward becomes clearer for everyone.

The Living Word

The Bible is described as "living and active."

This means it does something to us when we read it.

It isn't like reading a manual for a dishwasher.

It is a conversation.

The Holy Spirit uses the Word to speak to our specific situations.

You might read a verse you’ve seen a hundred times.

But today, it hits differently.

It provides exactly the comfort you needed for a hard conversation.

It gives you the courage to make a difficult decision.

This is the power of God’s guidance.

He knows where you are.

He knows the path you are walking.

He is not trying to keep you in the dark.

Finding Your Way

If you feel lost today, take heart.

The light is available.

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

You don't need to see the next five miles of the road.

You just need enough light for the next step.

Trust the Word.

Open it.

Let it shine into the corners of your life.

You will find that the darkness isn't as scary when you have a lamp.

We are here to walk this path with you.

If you have questions about where to start, we invite you to reach out.

Whether you are new to faith or have been walking with God for years, we all need the light.

Let’s trust the lamp together.
