Unlimited Access: Finding Jesus in the Gig Economy

The notification pings. Another delivery. Another ride. Another freelance project hitting your inbox.

If you are part of the gig economy, you know the rhythm. It’s the sound of the hustle. It’s the freedom of setting your own hours, mixed with the weight of wondering if there will be enough "gigs" to cover the bills next week. Whether you’re driving through the streets of Memphis or coding from a café in London, the digital age has changed how we work.

But has it changed how we worship?

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that God isn’t just found in a cathedral on a Sunday morning. He is with you in the driver’s seat. He’s with you in the warehouse. He is with you when you’re staring at a screen at 2:00 AM.

In our series, Unlimited Access, we are exploring how the presence of Jesus is available to everyone, everywhere, at any time. For the gig worker, this isn't just a nice thought: it’s a lifeline.

The Spiritual Reality of the Side Hustle

The gig economy is often sold as the ultimate freedom. "Be your own boss," the ads say. But the reality can feel a lot more like being a slave to an algorithm. There is a specific kind of stress that comes with flexible work: the isolation of having no coworkers, the lack of a safety net, and the pressure to always be "on."

This constant state of "doing" can make us feel disconnected from "being." We start to measure our worth by our rating or our hourly output.

But here is a fundamental truth: Your value is not determined by your productivity.

We believe that every person is created in the image of God. This is a core part of what we call sound doctrine. According to the 16 Fundamental Truths, man was created good and upright, but even after the fall, God’s plan for redemption was set in motion. That redemption covers your work life, too.

Finding the Sacred in the Shift

How do you find Jesus when you’re on the clock? It starts by recognizing that your work has dignity.

Whether you are delivering a hot meal to a busy family or giving someone a safe ride home, you are serving. In Colossians 3:23, the Bible tells us, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."

When you view your gig as a ministry, the atmosphere in your car or your workspace changes.

  • Your car becomes a sanctuary.

  • Your keyboard becomes a tool for God's glory.

  • Your interactions with customers become opportunities to show the love of Christ.

You don’t need a pulpit to reach people. Sometimes, the most powerful "sermon" is the kindness you show to a frustrated passenger or the integrity you bring to a project when no one is looking.

The Challenge of Isolation

One of the biggest hurdles for gig workers is the lack of community. When you don't have an office, you don't have a water cooler to stand around. You don't have a team to lean on. This isolation can lead to spiritual dryness.

This is exactly why Boundless Online Church exists. We are a global community designed for people whose lives don't fit into a 9-to-5 box. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, providing a space where you can connect no matter where your "office" is today.

If you’re feeling lonely on the road, try tuning into the Connected Faith Podcast. It’s designed to fuel your spirit while you move through your day. You can also catch up on Sunday Sermons during your breaks.

Faith wasn't meant to be practiced in a vacuum. Even if you can’t make it to a physical building, you can still be part of a vibrant, Spirit-filled body of believers.

Relying on God’s Provision

Let’s be real: the gig economy can be financially scary. One slow week can throw everything off.

This is where the rubber meets the road in our faith. Do we actually trust God to be our Provider?

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in Divine Healing and God's provision for all our needs: physical, spiritual, and emotional. When you are a freelancer, you learn to pray "Give us this day our daily bread" with a different kind of intensity.

Trusting God in the gig economy means:

  1. Practicing Stewardship: Managing what you have well, knowing it all belongs to Him.

  2. Rejecting Anxiety: Bringing your needs to Him in prayer instead of letting the "algorithm" dictate your peace.

  3. Generosity: Even when income is fluctuating, keeping a heart that is open to helping others.

If you are struggling with the financial weight of flexible work, we have resources on Faith, Family, and Finances that can help you align your wallet with your worship.

The Power of the "Digital Sabbath"

The "rise and grind" culture tells you that if you aren't working, you're losing. It tells you that every minute of your day should be monetized.

God tells us something different. He tells us to rest.

The Sabbath is a gift, not a burden. For a gig worker, a "traditional" Sunday Sabbath might be your busiest work day. That’s okay. The principle of Sabbath is about setting aside time to cease from labor and lean into God.

If you’re driving all weekend, maybe your Sabbath is Tuesday morning. Use that time to disconnect from the apps and reconnect with the Creator. Visit our Sunday Live Worship page to find a time that works for your schedule, or dive into a Bible study that refreshes your soul.

You Have Unlimited Access

The beauty of the Gospel is that Jesus doesn't wait for you to get your life "in order" before He meets you. He doesn't wait for you to get a "real job" or a steady salary.

He is the God of the road. He is the God of the midnight shift.

Through the Holy Spirit, we have Unlimited Access to the Father. This is one of the 16 Fundamental Truths: the Baptism in the Holy Spirit provides us with power for life and service. That power is available to you right now, in the middle of your shift.

Don't let the hustle hide the Hope. You are more than your gig. You are a child of the Most High God, called to be a light in a digital world.

Let’s Walk Together

Are you navigating the ups and downs of the gig economy? You don’t have to do it alone. At Boundless Online Church, we want to walk with you.

Whether you need a place to watch a service, a podcast to listen to while you drive, or a community to pray with, we are here. Explore our About page to see how we are reaching the world through technology.

If you’ve never made a decision to follow Jesus, or if you’ve been away from faith for a long time, there is no better time than right now. His "app" is always open, and He’s never too busy to take your call.

Boundless Online Church is a ministry of FA Memphis.
