Unlimited Access: Finding Peace in Public Transit

The doors hiss shut, the engine hums to life, and suddenly you’re squeezed into a space with dozens of strangers.

For many of us, the daily commute on a bus, train, or subway is a necessary part of life. It’s the bridge between our home sanctuary and our professional responsibilities. But let’s be honest: it’s rarely described as "peaceful." Between the delays, the crowded platforms, and the sensory overload, public transit can feel like a gauntlet you have to run before your day even truly begins.

At Boundless Online Church, we talk a lot about "Unlimited Access." Usually, we’re talking about how God’s grace and the community of believers are available to you no matter where you are. But that access doesn't stop when you step onto a subway car or board a city bus.

In fact, your commute might be the best place to practice finding the peace that passes all understanding.

The Commuter’s Challenge

There is a specific kind of stress that comes with public transportation. You aren't in control of the schedule. You aren't in control of who sits next to you. You are, in many ways, at the mercy of the system.

This lack of control can trigger anxiety. We worry about being late for a meeting, or we feel claustrophobic in the crowd. Our brains go into "survival mode," focusing on the friction of the journey rather than the destination or the present moment.

But what if we shifted our perspective? What if the commute wasn’t "lost time" or "stress time," but instead a sanctuary in motion?

Finding a Higher Connection

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in the "One True God" who has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM" (this is one of our 16 Fundamental Truths). One of the most beautiful things about the God we serve is His omnipresence. He isn't just in the church building on Sunday morning; He is in the seat next to you on the 8:05 AM train.

Unlimited access means that the Holy Spirit is available to comfort, guide, and calm you right in the middle of the morning rush. You don't need a quiet mountaintop to experience God’s presence. You just need a willing heart and perhaps a few practical tools to help you tune out the noise and tune into His frequency.

Practical Steps for a Calmer Commute

Finding peace is both a spiritual discipline and a practical one. Here are a few ways you can reclaim your transit time:

1. The Breathing Anchor

When the train stalls between stations or the bus is uncomfortably hot, your body’s stress response kicks in. You can counter this by focusing on your breath. Try taking five deep, slow breaths. Notice the air entering your lungs and leaving your body. This simple act grounds you in the present moment. It reminds you that, despite the chaos around you, you are alive, and God is providing the very air you breathe.

2. The 5-4-3-2-1 Technique

If you feel your anxiety rising, try this grounding exercise. Identify:

  • 5 things you can see (a colorful jacket, a flickering light, a book title).

  • 4 things you can touch (the cool metal of the handrail, the fabric of your bag).

  • 3 things you can hear (the rumble of the tracks, a distant muffled conversation).

  • 2 things you can smell (coffee, the faint scent of rain).

  • 1 thing you can taste (the lingering mint from your morning toothpaste).

This pulls your mind out of "what if" scenarios and back into the "right now," where God’s peace resides.

3. Strategic Solitude

If possible, look for the quiet spots. Sit near a window. There is something profoundly calming about watching the world go by. It reminds us of the scale of God’s creation. As you watch the city or the landscape move past, you can silently pray for the neighborhoods you are passing through.

Turning Technology into a Tabernacle

We often use our phones and tablets as a way to "numb out" during a commute. We scroll through news that makes us angry or social media that makes us feel inadequate. But your device can also be a tool for spiritual growth.

Instead of mindless scrolling, consider using that tablet or smartphone to engage with Scripture. Reading the Word of God during your commute is a powerful way to put on the "Armor of God" before you face the stresses of the office.

If you can’t make it to a physical service because of your travel schedule or work shifts, remember that the church is not limited by walls. You can join us for Sunday Live Worship or catch up on teachings while you’re in transit. This is the heart of Boundless Online Church: we are a digital church serving those who cannot attend in person, whether due to disability, distance, or a demanding commute.

Seeing the "Neighbor" in the Next Seat

One of the hardest parts of public transit is the "other people." We tend to see fellow commuters as obstacles or nuisances. But as followers of Christ, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Next time you’re feeling frustrated by the person talking too loudly on their phone or the crowd pressing in on you, try a simple prayer: “Lord, let me see them through Your eyes.”

Every person on that bus is someone God created and loves. They have their own struggles, their own fears, and their own need for peace. When we shift from irritation to empathy, our own stress levels begin to drop. We realize we are all in this journey together.

This is part of "Spirit-empowered living." It’s allowing the Holy Spirit to produce His fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness: even when we’re stuck in a crowded subway car.

Creating a Routine of Restoration

What if your commute became the most spiritually productive part of your day?

Imagine arriving at work not frazzled and exhausted, but centered and refreshed. It is possible. It starts with the decision to use the "Unlimited Access" you have been given through Christ.

  • Listen to Worship Music: Let the lyrics wash over you and redirect your thoughts.

  • Audio Bibles: If you’re standing and can’t hold a book, let the Word be spoken into your ears.

  • Silent Prayer: Use the time between stops to lift up your family, your coworkers, and your own needs to God.

If you find yourself struggling with loneliness or the weight of life during your travels, remember that you have a community here. You can visit our Prayer Wall to share your burdens or pray for others who are also on the journey.

A Sanctuary on Wheels

Public transit doesn’t have to be a desert experience. It can be an oasis.

When we lean into the presence of God, the bus becomes a prayer closet, and the train becomes a place of meditation. The transit system might be loud, but the "still small voice" of God is louder.

He is with you in the rush. He is with you in the delay. He is with you in the quiet moments before the doors open at your destination.

You have unlimited access to His peace. All you have to do is reach out and take it.
