Unlimited Access: Jesus in the Break Room

The fluorescent lights hum with a low, steady vibration that seems to get louder the longer your shift goes. Maybe you are sitting on a plastic chair in a warehouse in Memphis, or perhaps you are leaning against a counter in a nurses' station while the rest of the world sleeps. For those of us who work the odd hours: the warehouse pickers, the overnight security guards, the first responders, and the industrial crews: the break room isn't just a place to eat a lukewarm sandwich. It is often the only quiet space we get in a twelve-hour stretch. It is the place where we transition from the high-speed demands of the floor to a few minutes of forced rest.

Sometimes, in those moments, it can feel like God is somewhere else. We grow up thinking that meeting with Jesus requires a wooden pew, a choir, and a specific time on a Sunday morning. But if you are working the weekend shift or pulling a double, Sunday morning at 10:00 AM usually finds you asleep or elbow-deep in your responsibilities. The good news of the Gospel is that the presence of the Holy Spirit isn’t restricted by a time clock or a building’s GPS coordinates. At Boundless Online Church, we believe in a God of unlimited access. He doesn't need a security badge to enter your facility, and He doesn't wait for you to clock out before He starts listening to your heart.

When we talk about worship and discipleship in the workplace, we aren't talking about something that has to be loud or disruptive. In fact, some of the most powerful moments of spiritual growth happen right next to the vending machine. Discipleship is simply the process of becoming more like Jesus in the middle of our real lives. If your real life involves wearing steel-toed boots or scrubs, then that is exactly where your walk with God needs to happen. Jesus spent most of His earthly ministry in the "workplaces" of His day: on fishing boats, in tax offices, and walking dusty roads with people who were just trying to get through the week. He meets us where we are, not where we wish we were.

A warehouse worker in a safety vest pauses for a quiet moment of prayer and faith in a sunlit industrial setting.

One of the core beliefs we hold close in the Assemblies of God tradition is that the Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. This means that the instructions we find in Scripture aren't just for "religious" moments; they are for the break room, too. In the book of Colossians, we are reminded to do everything as if we are working for the Lord rather than for human masters. This shift in perspective changes everything about our shift. When you realize that your labor is an act of worship, the quality of your work becomes a testimony. You don't necessarily have to preach a sermon to your coworkers to show them who Jesus is. Often, the best way to represent Christ is by being the most reliable, most encouraging, and most diligent person on the team.

Living out your faith in a secular workplace can feel intimidating, especially when the culture around you is focused on complaining or cutting corners. We might feel like we have to hide our light just to fit in. However, we can look at the example of Daniel, who lived in a culture that was often hostile to his beliefs. Daniel didn't start a conflict, but he also didn't hide his devotion. He maintained a level of excellence that made him indispensable to his employers, yet he never compromised his daily connection with God. You can be the "Daniel" of your warehouse or hospital wing. Your peace in the middle of a chaotic shift is a witness that people will eventually notice.

Discipleship in the break room often looks like a phone propped up against a coffee mug. Technology has given us a tool that previous generations of shift workers never had: the ability to carry a community in our pockets. If you can’t make it to a physical building on Sunday, you can still engage with the Word. Many of our members use their thirty-minute lunch break to catch up on a message or join a conversation. This is why we focus so much on providing digital spaces. You can visit our Sunday Live Worship page to find recordings and live streams that fit into your schedule, no matter when your "Sunday" actually happens.

In our fellowship, we emphasize the importance of the 16 Fundamental Truths, which provide a solid foundation for everything we do. One of those truths is the Mission of the Church: to seek and save that which is lost and to build a body of believers. This mission doesn't stop at the church doors. When you are sitting in that break room, you are the church in that space. You might be the only "Bible" your coworkers ever read. By choosing not to participate in gossip, by offering a kind word to someone who is struggling, or by simply being a person of integrity, you are fulfilling the mission of the church in real-time.

Practicing discipleship in small windows of time requires intentionality. It might mean spending five minutes of your break reading a devotional rather than scrolling through stressful news headlines. We offer Daily Parent Devotionals that are designed to be consumed in short bursts throughout the day, recognizing that parents and workers often have very little "me time." These small habits of checking in with God build a spiritual resilience that helps you handle the stresses of a long shift without burning out.

Another vital part of staying strong in your faith while working tough hours is staying connected to other believers. It’s easy to feel isolated when your schedule doesn't line up with the rest of the world. This is why we encourage you to look into our Groups. These online communities are built for people who need flexibility. Having a group of people you can message when you're feeling drained at 3:00 AM can make all the difference. It reminds you that you aren't walking this path alone, even if you’re the only Christian on your particular crew.

We also have to talk about the power of prayer in the workplace. Prayer doesn't always have to be a long, formal event. It can be a "breath prayer" you say while you're washing your hands or walking to the time clock. It’s a way of inviting the Holy Spirit to give you strength, patience, and wisdom for the next few hours. If you are facing a particularly hard day, or if the weight of your responsibilities feels like too much, we want to stand with you. We have a Prayer Wall where you can post requests and see that others are praying for you. There is something powerful about knowing that while you are working your shift, someone else in the Boundless community is lifting you up before the throne of grace.

The concept of "Unlimited Access" means that the veil has been torn. There is no longer a barrier between the sacred and the secular. When Jesus died and rose again: a central tenet of our faith: He made a way for us to be in constant communion with the Father. This means that your break room table is just as much an altar as any church platform if you dedicate that time to Him. You don't need a special title or a license to minister to those around you through your character and your work ethic. You just need a heart that is open to the leading of the Spirit.

As you go back to your shift today, remember that your work matters to God. Whether you are stocking shelves, monitoring security feeds, or caring for the sick, you are doing work that serves others and honors the Creator. Don't let the grind steal your joy or your sense of purpose. You have unlimited access to the peace, strength, and wisdom of Jesus Christ, right there in the middle of the noise and the hustle. We are here to help you grow in that faith, one break at a time.

If you ever feel like you're losing your footing or you just need a reminder of what we believe as a community, you can always check out the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These truths are anchors for us, providing clarity in a world that often feels confusing. They remind us of the hope we have in Christ's return and the power we have through the Holy Spirit to live a life that is pleasing to Him.

Boundless Online Church is a ministry of FA Memphis. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.
