Water Baptism Vs Holy Spirit Baptism: The Key to Your Family’s Spiritual Strength

What is the difference between water baptism and the baptism in the Holy Spirit for my child? The simplest way to understand it is that water baptism is a public "I do" to Jesus: an outward celebration of the change He has already made in your child’s heart: while the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a special gift of spiritual power that helps your child live out their faith with boldness and strength. Think of water baptism as putting on the team jersey to show everyone who you play for, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit as receiving the "supercharged" energy and wisdom from the Coach to win the game.

In our homes, we want our children to have every tool available to navigate the world. We teach them how to tie their shoes, how to be kind to neighbors, and how to study for tests. But as Christian parents, the most important "gear" we can help them put on is their spiritual armor. Understanding the two baptisms isn't just about checking off a religious box; it’s about establishing a foundation that helps your family stand firm when life gets a little shaky.

At Boundless Online Church and First Assembly Memphis, we follow the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These truths remind us that God wants to do a complete work in us. He doesn't just want to save us; He wants to fill us! Let’s walk through these two beautiful experiences together in a way that makes sense for you and your kids.

Water Baptism: The Public Declaration of a Private Miracle

Imagine your child has just had the most amazing day at school and they can’t wait to tell you about it. Their eyes are wide, and they are bursting with the news. Water baptism is a lot like that. When a child decides to follow Jesus, something incredible happens on the inside. Water baptism is the way they tell the whole world, "I belong to Him!"

According to the Bible and our shared faith at FA Memphis, water baptism is a command from Jesus Himself. It’s not what saves us: only faith in Jesus does that: but it is an act of obedience. We practice immersion, which means going all the way under the water. This is a powerful symbol! When your child goes under the water, it represents the "old self" being buried with Jesus. When they come up out of the water, it represents a brand-new life, just like Jesus rising from the grave.

For a child, this can feel like a big, exciting party. And it should be! It’s a milestone that says, "I’m not just a kid who goes to church; I’m a follower of the King." It’s a moment they will remember forever, marking the day they publicly identified with the family of God.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Power for the Journey

While water baptism is an outward sign, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is an inward empowering. You might hear people call it "the gift of the Father." Jesus promised His disciples in the Book of Acts that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them. This wasn't just power to perform miracles; it was power to be witnesses: to have the courage to speak the truth and the strength to live like Jesus every single day.

As parents, we know that being a Christian in today's world can be tough for kids. They face peer pressure, confusing messages, and moments where they feel alone in their faith. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is like a spiritual battery that never runs out. It provides your child with a deeper connection to God’s voice and a special "language" of prayer that builds them up from the inside out.

At FA Memphis, we believe this experience is distinct from and follows the experience of salvation. It’s something every believer should "ardently expect" and "earnestly seek." It isn't something to be afraid of; it’s a beautiful, gentle filling of God’s love that equips your child to serve others and use the spiritual gifts God has placed inside them.

Talking to Your Kids: Ages and Stages

How you explain these baptisms will change as your child grows. We want them to feel wonder, not pressure. Here is a little guide on how to handle these conversations at home:

For the Little Ones (Ages 3–6): Focus on the "Friendship" and the "Helper." You can say, "Water baptism is a big splash to show we are Jesus’ best friends! And the Holy Spirit is our Special Helper who lives in our hearts to help us be brave and kind." Keep it simple and focus on the joy of belonging to God’s family.

For the Builders (Ages 7–9): Use the "Jersey and Power" analogy. Explain that water baptism is showing everyone which team we are on. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is like having God’s own strength inside us so we can help other people find Jesus too. Ask them, "Have you ever felt like you wanted to tell a friend about Jesus but were a little nervous? The Holy Spirit helps us with that!"

For the Seekers (Ages 10–12): This is a great age to dive into the Bible together. Read Acts 2 or Acts 8. Talk about how the early church needed God’s power to change the world, and how we need that same power today. Encourage them to ask questions. Let them know that seeking the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a personal journey between them and God, and you are there to pray with them whenever they are ready.

A Family Adventure at First Assembly Memphis

We are so excited to announce that our next Water Baptism Service is coming up soon at First Assembly Memphis! There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of our church family cheering as people: both young and old: take that plunge into the water. It’s a celebration of life, grace, and new beginnings.

If your child has been asking questions about being baptized, or if you feel like they are ready to make that public stand, we would love to walk with you through that process. Our team is here to help explain the meaning to your child and ensure they feel confident and happy about their decision. You can visit our "I'm New" page or stop by the connection center this Sunday to get more details.

Hands-On Faith: A Fun Family Activity

To help these concepts stick, try this simple object lesson at home this week! You’ll need a dry sponge and a bowl of water.

The Sponge Story: Show your kids the dry sponge. Tell them the sponge is like us. When we decide to follow Jesus, we are like that sponge being dipped quickly into the water (Water Baptism). It shows where the sponge belongs! But then, hold the sponge under the water and let it soak until it’s heavy and full. That is like the baptism in the Holy Spirit. We aren't just "wet" on the outside; we are "filled" on the inside so that everywhere we go, we can "squeeze out" God’s love and power onto others.

Spiritual Connection Script: "God, thank You for making us part of Your family. We thank You for the chance to show the world we love You through water baptism. And Father, we ask that You fill our home and our children with Your Holy Spirit. Give us Your power to be brave, Your wisdom to make good choices, and Your love for everyone we meet. Amen."
