The Bible encourages us that because God is with us, we do not need to be overcome by fear. When we are afraid, we can put our trust in Him, knowing that He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.
Isaiah 41:10 - "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
2 Timothy 1:7 - "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."
Psalm 56:3 - "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."
Bible Study | What are the best Bible verses about fear? | Finding Peace in His Presence
I know what it feels like to have that heavy weight sitting on your chest in the middle of the night. Fear isn't just a feeling; sometimes it feels like a physical presence in the room, whispering "what if" scenarios into your ear. But I want you to hear me clearly today: you are never forgotten, you are never alone, and you are deeply loved by God. When the world feels like it’s spinning out of control, we have a solid rock to stand on.
As we dive into these scriptures, it is important to remember that our Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. We believe that God is sovereign, that He is good, and that He is actively involved in our lives today. We don’t just read these verses as ancient poetry; we read them as living promises that apply to your life right now, in this very moment. Fear might be a natural human response, but as believers, we have access to a supernatural peace that passes all understanding.

Take a look at Isaiah 41:10. This is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible for a reason. God doesn't just tell us "don't be afraid" and leave it at that. He gives us the reason why: "for I am with you." The antidote to fear isn't just more courage; it is the presence of God. When I realize that the Creator of the ends of the earth is holding my hand, the giants in my life suddenly don't look so big. He promises to strengthen us and uphold us. You don't have to find the strength within yourself today. You just have to lean into His.
Then we have 2 Timothy 1:7. I love this verse because it reminds us of our spiritual identity. If you are feeling a spirit of fear, that nagging, paralyzing dread, know that it didn't come from your Heavenly Father. God is the author of power, love, and a sound mind. In our walk of faith, we understand that through the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to take our thoughts captive. A "sound mind" means we don't have to be victims of our own anxieties. We can choose to focus on the Truth of the Gospel rather than the lies of the enemy.
Psalm 56:3 is perhaps the most honest verse in the Bible. It says, "When I am afraid..." It doesn't say "if" I am afraid. It acknowledges that fear will come. Even the most seasoned believers face moments of terror. But the verse gives us an immediate action step: "I put my trust in you." It is a conscious decision to pivot from the fear to the Father. It's like a child reaching for their parent’s hand in a dark room. The room is still dark, but because the hand is there, the fear loses its power.

One thing I always tell our community is that we have to be careful about what we allow into our "eye-gates" and "ear-gates." If you spend all day watching the news or scrolling through stressful social media feeds, fear will naturally grow. As your pastor, I want to encourage you to protect your peace. When you're looking for media to consume, I highly recommend using VidAngel or "Enjoy Movies Your Way" to find family-safe, clean versions of movies and shows. It makes a huge difference in the atmosphere of your home.
Furthermore, in this digital age, fear often creeps in through what our children see or what we stumble upon ourselves. I strongly suggest using tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes for online safety and accountability. When we know our digital environment is protected, it removes one more source of potential anxiety. We want our homes to be sanctuaries of rest, not conduits for the world's chaos.
Let's look at a few more verses that offer comfort. Psalm 23:4 tells us that even in the "valley of the shadow of death," we fear no evil. Why? Because "You are with me." Notice that God doesn't always take us *around* the valley; sometimes He takes us *through* it. But the comfort comes from His rod and His staff, His guidance and His protection. You might be in a valley right now, but you aren't staying there, and you aren't walking it alone.
Philippians 4:6-7 gives us the practical "how-to" for dealing with anxiety. It tells us not to be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the result? The peace of God will guard your heart and mind. I find that when I start thanking God for what He has *already* done, it's much harder for fear to tell me what He *won't* do in the future. Gratitude is a powerful weapon against fear.

I also want to touch on the "fear of man." Proverbs 29:25 says that the fear of man lays a snare. So much of our anxiety comes from worrying about what people think of us, or whether we are being judged. But the verse continues, "whoever trusts in the Lord is safe." When our primary focus is on our relationship with Jesus, the opinions of others start to lose their weight. You are a priceless child of God, and His opinion of you is the only one that truly defines your worth.
In our Assemblies of God tradition, we emphasize the power of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives. We believe that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and that through Him, we are more than conquerors. If you haven't made that decision to follow Him, that is the first step in finding true peace. Fear can't reside where the Prince of Peace is King. We meet people where they are, and if you are in a place of deep fear today, please know that Jesus is reaching out to you with open arms.
Here are a few practical "quests" you can do this week to build your courage:
1. Write down Isaiah 41:10 on a sticky note and put it on your bathroom mirror. Read it out loud every morning.
2. Take a 24-hour "news fast." Replace that time with worship music or a Bible study podcast.
3. Identify one specific fear you have and pray the prayer below, specifically naming that fear to God.

Remember, the goal isn't just to be "fearless" in our own strength. The goal is to be so filled with God's love that fear has no room to grow. 1 John 4:18 tells us that "perfect love drives out fear." As you grow in your understanding of how much God loves you, you will find that fear starts to shrink. You are safe in His hands. You are held by His righteous right hand.
If you're looking for a community to walk this journey with, we are here for you. Whether you are homebound, unchurched, or just seeking a deeper connection, Boundless is your home online. We want to support you, celebrate you, and lift you up. You don't have to face your fears by yourself.
A Prayer for Courage and Trust
Heavenly Father, I come to You today feeling the weight of fear and anxiety. I thank You for Your promise that You are always with me. I ask that You would replace my spirit of fear with Your spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Help me to trust You when I cannot see the path ahead. Strengthen me with Your righteous right hand and fill my heart with Your perfect peace. I choose to put my trust in You today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
