What does it mean that God is the One True God—and how does that steady a family?

It means you don’t have to anchor your home to your mood, your schedule, or your ability to hold it all together—you can anchor your family to God’s unchanging nature: He is one, He is present, and He is faithful.

A Message from FA Memphis

Hey there, family! We are so glad you’ve paused for a moment to lean into the heart of God with us. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that the strongest homes aren't built on perfect schedules or the latest parenting hacks, but on the solid, unchanging nature of the One True God. Today, we’re diving into a truth that is both deeply theological and incredibly practical for your Tuesday morning (or Friday night!) chaos. Let's find some peace together in the presence of the "I AM."

Scripture

Deuteronomy 6:4 (NIV)

> "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."

Reflection: The God Who Is

If you’ve ever tried to assemble a piece of furniture with a "helper" who is four years old, you know that things can get a little... wobbly. Life often feels that way, doesn't it? One minute you have everything under control, and the next, someone has colored on the sofa, the Wi-Fi is down, and you’re wondering if you’re actually qualified for this "adulting" thing.

In the middle of the wobble, we have an anchor.

When we talk about the One True God, we aren't just talking about a historical figure or a distant force. We are talking about the "I AM." This is the second Fundamental Truth of the Assemblies of God, and it’s the bedrock of everything we believe. God is the eternally self-existent One.

What does "self-existent" even mean for a parent who is currently surviving on caffeine and grace? It means that God doesn't need anything to keep going. He doesn't need a nap. He doesn't need a pep talk. He doesn't even need us: and yet, He wants us. He is the source of all life, all love, and all light.

The Mystery of the Three-in-One

We serve one God who has revealed Himself as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “How do I explain the Trinity to my seven-year-old when I barely understand it myself?”

Think of it this way: God is a community of perfect love within Himself. The Father loves the Son, the Son obeys the Father, and the Spirit carries that love out into the world. When we invite God into our homes, we aren't just inviting a rule-maker; we are inviting a Relationship.

Our God is a steady anchor because He never changes. In a world where trends shift faster than a toddler’s mood, the "I AM" remains the same. He is the Father who protects, the Son (Jesus) who walks beside us as a brother and Savior, and the Holy Spirit who comforts us when the house is finally quiet and the weight of the world feels heavy.

Knowing that God is the "One True God" provides a unique security for our families. It means there aren't "other gods" we have to please. We don't have to bow to the god of "Perfect Parenting" or the god of "Career Success." We answer to the One who made the stars and still knows how many hairs are on your child’s head (even the ones currently covered in peanut butter).

If you’re feeling a bit adrift today, remember that your anchor isn't your ability to keep things together. Your anchor is the Fact of God. He is. He was. He always will be.

Parent Integration: Bringing Truth Home

We want to help you make this truth stick! Here are some resources to help you and your kids explore the nature of the One True God together.

Scripture Memory Cards (Printable Style)

To create these at home, simply cut cardstock into four squares and write the following:

  1. Verse: Deuteronomy 6:4 - "The Lord our God, the Lord is one."

  2. Verse: Exodus 3:14 - "I AM WHO I AM."

  3. Verse: Matthew 28:19 - "...in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

  4. Verse: Psalm 102:27 - "But you remain the same, and your years will never end."

Parent Discussion Guide

The Heart of the Story: God is the self-existent "I AM." He is one God in three persons, and He is the only source of true security for our family.

  • Ages 3–6: "God is the biggest and best! There is only one God, and He loves us so much. Did you know He made the sun and the moon, but He also likes to listen to your prayers?"

  • Ages 7–9: "Sometimes we feel scared when things change, like moving schools or trying something new. But God says His name is 'I AM.' That means He is always there, never changing. How does that make you feel when you’re nervous?"

  • Ages 10–12: "The Bible says God is Father, Son, and Spirit. They work together in perfect unity. How can our family practice 'unity' this week? How does knowing God is in control help you when life feels chaotic?"

Hands-On Faith: The Unity Jar

Items needed: A clear jar, water, blue food coloring, and some glitter.

1. Fill the jar with water (representing God the Father).

2. Add a drop of blue coloring (representing Jesus, the Son, who showed us God’s love).

3. Add the glitter (representing the Holy Spirit, who moves and shines in our hearts).

4. The Script: "Look how they all mix together. You can’t really take the blue out of the water, and the glitter is everywhere! They are different, but they are all one jar of beautiful water. This reminds us that God is three-in-one, working together to love us and keep us safe."

Action: The Grounding Moment

Take sixty seconds right now. If you can, grab your kids' hands or just sit quietly by yourself.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Exercise:

* Acknowledge 5 things you can see around you (The messy shoes, the sunlight, the dog).

* Acknowledge 4 things you can touch (The fabric of your chair, your child’s hand).

* Acknowledge 3 things you hear (The hum of the fridge, birds outside).

* Acknowledge 2 things you can smell.

* Acknowledge 1 thing you can taste.

Now, realize that the One True God is present in all of it. He is the "I AM" in this very room. Take a deep breath. You are anchored.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the One True God. You are not a god of confusion or fear, but of peace and steady love. Thank You for being our 'I AM' when we feel like we 'are not' enough. Guard our home, protect our children’s hearts, and help us to rest in the security of who You are. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, lead us today. Amen.

Family Question

"If you could describe God using only one word, what would it be? Why did you pick that word?"
