Tier 2 → First-Time Guests & Seekers
This post equips Memphis-area seekers and new guests with a clear, biblical foundation of salvation, helping First Assembly Memphis fulfill our mission to welcome every person into transforming relationship with Jesus Christ.
The Assemblies of God believes salvation is a free gift from God, received through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone. It's not earned by good works but granted by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), making every believer a new creation in Christ.
If you've been attending First Assembly Memphis here in Cordova or you're just exploring what we believe, you've probably heard us talk a lot about salvation. Maybe you're wondering: What exactly do we mean by that? How do Assemblies of God churches understand this whole "getting saved" thing?
Let me walk you through it in a way that's clear, biblical, and rooted in what the AG has believed for over a century, because this isn't just theology on paper. This is the heartbeat of why our church exists in the 901.
Salvation Is God's Gift, Not Our Achievement
Here's the foundation: salvation is 100% a gift from God. You can't earn it, buy it, or work your way into it. The Apostle Paul makes this crystal clear in Ephesians 2:8-9:
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."
That means no amount of church attendance, volunteer hours, or good behavior can save you. Those things are beautiful expressions of a transformed life, but they're not the ticket to heaven. Salvation comes through repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ's substitutionary death for your sin.
Romans 10:9 gives us the simple, powerful pathway: "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
That's it. That's the gospel. And it's available to everyone, whether you grew up in church around the 901 or you just walked in for the first time last Sunday.

What Happens When Someone Gets Saved?
The AG calls this experience being "born again." It's not just a decision or a prayer you repeat, it's a supernatural transformation. Here's what happens:
You Become a New Creation
The moment you place your faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit does something miraculous. You're regenerated, spiritually reborn. The Bible says you become a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). Your old identity, guilt, and separation from God are washed away.
You're Justified by Grace
Justification is a big theological word, but it's simple: God declares you righteous. Not because you are perfect, but because Jesus' righteousness is credited to your account. You stand before God not in your own merit, but in Christ's finished work on the cross.
You Receive the Witness of the Spirit
There's both an inward evidence and an outward evidence of salvation. Inwardly, the Holy Spirit gives you a direct witness, a deep assurance that you belong to God. Outwardly, your life begins to change. You start living differently. That's not you trying harder; that's the Spirit at work in you, producing what the Bible calls the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, and the rest.
Water Baptism: A Public Declaration
After someone gets saved, we practice water baptism by immersion. This isn't what saves you, it's a powerful, obedient response to being saved.
When you go under the water, you're declaring to everyone watching, your family, your friends, the whole First Assembly Memphis community, that you've died with Christ. When you come up out of the water, you're saying, "I've been raised to walk in a new life."
It's a beautiful, public celebration of what God has already done in your heart.

Salvation Is For Everyone
Here's something we're passionate about at First Assembly Memphis: God's offer of salvation is universal. It's not just for a select few. The Bible says God "wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:4).
God gives what theologians call prevenient grace, grace that goes before. That means before you ever thought about God, He was already drawing you, pursuing you, wooing you toward Himself. He's not sitting in heaven waiting for you to mess up. He's reaching out, inviting you home.
Whether you're in Cordova, Bartlett, or anywhere in the Memphis area, God's grace is available to you right now.
Can You Lose Your Salvation?
This is a question a lot of people ask, and the AG takes a clear position rooted in Scripture: yes, it is possible to fall from grace through persistent, unrepentant sin.
This isn't about losing your salvation every time you mess up. We all stumble. We all need God's grace daily. But the Bible warns against willfully turning away from Christ and rejecting His grace after you've received it.
The good news? God is faithful. He doesn't give up on you easily. His grace is abundant, and His desire is always to restore and redeem. If you're struggling, if you've drifted, He's calling you back.
Sanctification: Growing in Holiness
Salvation isn't just a one-time event, it launches you into a lifelong journey called sanctification. This is the ongoing process where the Holy Spirit works in you to make you more like Jesus.
You separate from sin. You grow in holiness. You become the person God created you to be. It's not about perfection; it's about progression. And it happens one day, one decision, one act of obedience at a time.
At First Assembly Memphis, we're committed to walking that journey with you. Through worship, small groups, Bible study, and community, we help each other grow.

Why This Matters in Memphis
We live in a city with deep spiritual roots and a hunger for authentic faith. Memphis is a place where people are searching for hope, healing, and a fresh start. And that's exactly what salvation in Jesus Christ offers.
When someone gets saved, it doesn't just change their eternity, it changes their now. It changes families. It changes neighborhoods. It changes the 901.
That's why we exist. That's why First Assembly Memphis opens its doors every week. Because we believe the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, and we want to see that power transform our city.
What Now?
If you've never made a decision to follow Jesus, today can be your day. You don't have to clean up your life first. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to come to Him with an open heart and say, "Jesus, I need You. I believe You died for me and rose again. I want to follow You."
If you've already made that decision but you've been drifting, it's not too late. God is calling you back. Come home.
And if you're ready to take the next step, whether that's salvation, baptism, or just learning more, we'd love to walk with you. Visit us at famemphis.net, check out our beliefs page, or connect with us this week.
