What Does the Assemblies of God Believe About the Holy Spirit? Pentecostal 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Mastering the Basics

The Assemblies of God believes the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity who empowers believers through the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This distinct experience, evidenced by speaking in tongues, provides supernatural strength for holy living, divine healing, and witnessing to the world.

Walking through the streets of Memphis or driving down Germantown Parkway, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the weight of the world. From the pressure of daily life to the heavy chains of anxiety and addiction, many of us feel like we are fighting a battle we simply cannot win on our own. If you have ever felt like your "willpower" wasn't enough, you are not alone, and there is a reason for that.

The Good News is that God never intended for you to live this life in your own strength. In the Pentecostal tradition, and specifically within the Assemblies of God, we believe that the Holy Spirit is not just a theological concept or a "ghost" from the past. He is a living, breathing Power available to you right now in the 901. He is the Comforter for the anxious, the Deliverer for the addicted, and the Power for the powerless.

Understanding the Person of the Holy Spirit

Before we talk about power, we have to talk about Presence. In our Pentecostal 101 journey, the first thing to master is that the Holy Spirit is a Person. He has a mind, emotions, and a will. He isn’t an "it", He is God.

Definition: The Trinity The biblical truth that God exists as one Being in three eternal Persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. They are distinct in personhood but one in essence and power.

At First Assembly Memphis, we teach that when you say "yes" to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. He begins the work of "sanctification", which is just a church word for "making you more like Jesus." But there is a second experience we hold dear: the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The Pentecostal Distinctive: Baptism in the Holy Spirit

You might have heard people talking about "speaking in tongues" or "Spirit-filled" worship. In the Assemblies of God, we believe that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a special experience following salvation. Think of it like this: if salvation is like getting a glass of water, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like being thrown into the middle of the Mississippi River. It is an immersion in God’s power.

According to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, this experience is:

  1. Distinct from Salvation: You can be a Christian and not yet have experienced this specific baptism.

  2. Evidenced by Tongues: We believe the initial physical sign of this baptism is speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4).

  3. For Everyone: It wasn't just for the early church in the Book of Acts; it is for every believer in Memphis, Bartlett, Arlington, and beyond today.

Community and Power in Memphis

Sin vs. Grace: The Battle for Your Heart

Many people in our community struggle with a deep sense of "not being good enough." This is the tension between Sin and Grace. Sin is more than just "doing bad things"; it is a condition of the heart that separates us from God’s best for our lives.

Grace, however, is God’s unmerited favor. It is the bridge that brings us back. But here is the Pentecostal secret: Grace isn't just a "get out of jail free" card. It is the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit that gives you the ability to say "no" to the things that are destroying you.

Definition: Sanctification The lifelong process of being set apart from sin and dedicated to God. It begins at the moment of salvation and continues as the Holy Spirit transforms our character.

Overcoming Addiction and Anxiety: What the Data Says

We live in a world where anxiety is at an all-time high. In Memphis, we see the devastating effects of addiction every day. While professional help is vital and supported by our church, there is a supernatural component to recovery that cannot be ignored.

Research shows a profound connection between faith and mental wellness:

  • 60-80% of major studies find a positive association between religious involvement and lower rates of depression and substance abuse.

  • Weekly service attendance is linked to a 20-30% lower risk of developing depression.

  • Faith-based recovery often sees higher rates of long-term abstinence because it addresses the "spiritual hole" that many try to fill with substances.

When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, He provides a "peace that passes understanding." For the person in Cordova battling a panic attack or the neighbor in Bartlett fighting a craving, the Holy Spirit is the immediate source of strength. He reminds you that you are a child of God, not a slave to your struggle.

Overcoming Anxiety Through the Spirit

The "Memphis Miracle": A Story of Power

When we talk about "Miracles in Memphis," we aren't just talking about physical healing (though we believe in that too!). One of the greatest miracles in our city's history is actually known as the "Memphis Miracle" of 1994.

During this event, white and Black Pentecostal leaders came together to repent of racism and segregation. They washed each other's feet and formed a new, unified body. In a city with a complicated history like ours, this was a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit. It proved that the Spirit of God can break down walls that politics and culture never could.

We see "mini-miracles" every Sunday at First Assembly Memphis, marriages restored, addictions broken, and hearts healed from years of trauma. These aren't just coincidences; they are the result of the Holy Spirit moving in our midst.

How to Walk in the Spirit: A Practical Checklist

How do you move from just knowing about the Holy Spirit to living in His power? Here is a simple guide to mastering the basics:

  1. Ask for Empowerment: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13). Simply ask Him to fill you.

  2. Prioritize Prayer: Spend time every day talking to God. Don't worry about being fancy; just be honest.

  3. Study the Word: The Holy Spirit wrote the Bible through men; He will use those same words to speak to you today.

  4. Stay Connected: Don't be a "lone wolf" Christian. Join a Life Group or get involved in a ministry like The Journey.

  5. Listen to the "Still Small Voice": Pay attention to the gentle nudges to pray for a friend, help a neighbor, or change a habit.

Walking in Grace Every Day

Life Takeaway: You Are Not Alone

The most important thing to remember is that the Holy Spirit is your Helper. Whether you are navigating a difficult career path in downtown Memphis or raising a family in Collierville, you have access to the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be open.

Are you ready to stop fighting in your own strength and start walking in the power of the Holy Spirit?
