Single and Seen: A Bible Study on Being Single

By Boundless Writing Team and Dr. Layne McDonald
The short answer
The Bible says being single is not a waiting room, a punishment, or a second-class way to follow Jesus. Jesus Himself lived as a single man. Paul called singleness a gift (1 Corinthians 7:7). And God promises single believers a place and a name in His family that nothing can take away (Isaiah 56:5). Married or single, your worth comes from Christ, and your life right now can be full of purpose.
Let's be honest. Being single in church can feel lonely sometimes. The event is "couples night." Somebody at the family reunion asks, again, "So, are you seeing anyone?" You smile, but inside you wonder, "Does anybody actually see me?"
Maybe you have never been married and you are tired of waiting. Maybe you are divorced and still sorting through the hurt. Maybe you are single again in a way you never expected. Wherever you are, friend, this study is for you. You are not an afterthought to God, and you are not an afterthought to us.
How to use this study
Do this study alone with a cup of coffee or with a few friends. Each part has a passage, a short reflection, and two questions. Read slowly. There are no wrong answers when you are honest with God.
Part 1: The God who sees you
Read: Genesis 16:1-13
Hagar was alone in the desert, mistreated and pushed aside. Then the angel of the LORD found her by a spring, called her by name, and spoke to her.
Here is how she responded: "She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: 'You are the God who sees me,' for she said, 'I have now seen the One who sees me'" (Genesis 16:13, NIV).
If you feel overlooked, start right here. People may not notice you, but God does. David prayed, "You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar" (Psalm 139:1-2, NIV). He knows the quiet evenings and the prayers you have prayed for years.
Reflect:
When have you felt most unseen as a single adult?
What changes if you really believe God sees you today, right where you are?
Part 2: Jesus knows this life
Read: Mark 3:31-35 and Psalm 68:6
Here is something we do not talk about enough. Jesus, the most whole person who ever lived, never married. He had close friends, a mission, and a Father who loved Him. Nobody would say His life was missing something. He has walked this road.
Jesus also redefined family. Looking at the people gathered around Him, He said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother" (Mark 3:34-35, NIV). In God's house, nobody is a plus one. You are family.
And God has a plan for the lonely: "God sets the lonely in families" (Psalm 68:6, NIV). One of the main ways He does that is through His church: real people who pray for you, check on you, and save you a seat.
Reflect:
Does it encourage you to know that Jesus lived as a single man? Why or why not?
Who is your spiritual family right now? Who could you invite closer?
Part 3: Single is not second best
Read: 1 Corinthians 7:7-8, 32-35 and Isaiah 56:3-5
Paul was single, and he was not shy about it. He wrote, "I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that" (1 Corinthians 7:7, NIV). Then he added, "It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do" (1 Corinthians 7:8, NIV).
Paul is not putting marriage down. The Bible honors marriage as a beautiful gift from God. But single believers need to know their season has real value too. He explains, "I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord" (1 Corinthians 7:35, NIV).
Your time, energy, and heart can be poured into God's work in a way unique to this season. That is not a consolation prize. That is a calling.
Isaiah 56 speaks to people who felt shut out of God's blessing. One of them said, "I am only a dry tree" (Isaiah 56:3, NIV). In that culture, having no family line could feel like having no future. But God answered with a promise: "to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will endure forever" (Isaiah 56:5, NIV).
Your legacy is not measured by your relationship status. It is held by God, and it lasts forever.
Reflect:
Have you ever felt like a "dry tree"? What does God's promise in Isaiah 56:5 say to that feeling?
What is one way you could use this season for "undivided devotion to the Lord" this month?
Part 4: Waiting with hope, not dread
Read: Psalm 27:13-14 and Lamentations 3:25-26
Many single believers hope to marry one day, and that is a good desire. You do not have to pretend you are not waiting. Bring that longing straight to God. "Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge" (Psalm 62:8, NIV).
But there is a difference between waiting with dread and waiting with hope. Scripture says, "Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD" (Psalm 27:14, NIV). And, "The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD" (Lamentations 3:25-26, NIV).
Waiting with hope means you do not put your life on pause. You serve, grow, laugh, and follow Jesus today. Think of Anna in Luke 2. She was married only seven years before she was widowed, and she spent the rest of her long life worshiping God "night and day, fasting and praying" (Luke 2:37, NIV). God used her to welcome baby Jesus. Her single years were not wasted years.
Reflect:
Is there any part of your life you have put "on hold" until you are married?
What would it look like to wait with hope this week instead of dread?
Part 5: Whole in Christ, whatever your story
Read: Colossians 2:9-10, Psalm 34:18, and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Here is the heart of it all. Paul wrote, "in Christ you have been brought to fullness" (Colossians 2:10, NIV). You are not half a person waiting to be completed by someone else. If you belong to Jesus, you are already whole in Him.
If you are divorced or single again, your story may come with grief, regret, or deep hurt. Please hear this with love: there is grace for you here. "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18, NIV). You are welcome at His table and in His church. He is not finished with you.
And because we belong to Him, we honor Him with our whole lives, including our bodies and relationships. "You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NIV). God's design for sex inside marriage is not there to hold you back. It protects your heart. And if you have stumbled, His mercy is bigger than your mistakes. Come back to Him. He is waiting with open arms.
Most of all, remember His promise: "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5, NIV). Single, married, divorced, or widowed, you are never alone.
Reflect:
What would change if you saw yourself as already whole in Christ?
Is there any hurt or regret you need to bring to Jesus today?
A prayer for this season
Lord, thank You that You see me. Thank You that I am not overlooked, forgotten, or less than in Your eyes. Help me trust You with my desires and my future. Fill this season with purpose, friendship, and joy. Heal what is hurting, and help me live in undivided devotion to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
If you have never put your trust in Jesus, you can do that today. He loves you, He died and rose again for you, and He will welcome you the moment you call on Him.
