Marriage is a sacred, lifelong covenant established by God between one man and one woman. It isn’t just a social contract; it’s a foundational relationship designed at creation to reflect the sacrificial love between Jesus Christ and His Church. By following God's blueprint, couples can build a lasting union rooted in grace, mutual respect, and spiritual purpose, serving as a powerful witness of the Gospel to the world.
Relevant Bible Verses
Genesis 2:24: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
Matthew 19:6: "So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."
Ephesians 5:25: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."
Hebrews 13:4: "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous."
Colossians 3:14: "And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."
God’s Original Intent for Marriage
When we ask what the Bible says about marriage, we have to go back to the very beginning. Marriage wasn't a human invention or a cultural evolution. It was God’s idea. In the book of Genesis, we see that God created a world that was "very good," yet He noted one thing that was "not good": for man to be alone.
God designed marriage as the first and most fundamental human institution. It predates the church and the state. It is the bedrock of society and the primary way God intended for humans to find companionship, experience intimacy, and raise the next generation in a stable, loving environment.
In this design, marriage is a covenant, a solemn, binding promise made before God. Unlike a contract, which is often based on "if you do your part, I'll do mine," a biblical covenant is a commitment to remain faithful even when things get difficult. It is a "holding fast" to one another, as Genesis describes, creating a "one flesh" union that is physical, emotional, and spiritual.

Marriage as a Gospel Signpost
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that marriage serves a purpose much larger than the happiness of the two people involved. The Apostle Paul reveals a "profound mystery" in Ephesians 5: he explains that human marriage is actually a living, breathing illustration of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His Church.
This means that every marriage has the potential to tell the story of the Gospel. When a husband loves his wife sacrificially, putting her needs above his own and serving her with humility, he shows the world how Christ loved the Church and gave His life for her. When a wife supports and respects her husband, she mirrors the way the Church responds to the leadership and love of Jesus.
This perspective changes how we view conflict and daily life. It’s no longer just about "winning" an argument; it’s about representing Jesus well to your spouse and to the world watching you. Whether you are a shift worker coming home late at night or a caregiver managing a difficult household, your commitment to your spouse is a testimony of God’s unchanging love.
Roles, Responsibilities, and Grace
The Bible provides clear guidance on how to navigate the roles within a marriage. These roles are not about power or superiority; they are about functional harmony and mutual flourishing.
Husbands are called to be the spiritual leaders of the home. This doesn't mean being a dictator; it means being the "first to serve" and the "first to sacrifice." A husband’s leadership should look like Jesus’ leadership, washing feet, protecting the vulnerable, and providing for the family’s spiritual and physical needs.
Wives are called to a posture of godly support and submission, which is an act of trust and partnership. In a healthy, biblical marriage, both spouses are "submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Ephesians 5:21). It is a dance of mutual respect where both parties use their God-given strengths to build a home that honors the Lord.
However, we all know that marriage can be hard. We are two imperfect people living in a broken world. This is where grace becomes essential. The Bible tells us to be kind, compassionate, and to forgive one another just as God in Christ forgave us. Forgiveness isn’t just a one-time event; in marriage, it’s a daily practice. It’s about choosing not to hold a grudge and choosing to extend the same mercy to our spouse that we receive from God every morning.

Faithfulness and the 16 Fundamental Truths
Our commitment to biblical marriage is rooted in the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. We believe in the authority of Scripture as our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. This includes God's definition of marriage as a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman.
Maintaining purity and faithfulness within the marriage bond is not just a moral suggestion; it is a spiritual necessity. The Bible is very clear that marriage should be held in honor and the "marriage bed kept pure." In a world that often treats relationships as disposable, the Christian call to permanence and fidelity is a radical act of faith. It says to the world that God is faithful, and because He is faithful to us, we can be faithful to one another.
