Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience after salvation where Jesus empowers believers for witness and service. In the New Testament pattern, it is accompanied by the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4).
WHY this matters: At FA Memphis, we believe the baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't just ancient history, it's a present-day reality that equips everyday people in Memphis and the 901 to live bold, Jesus-centered lives.
Today (March 9): Pastoral Staff Meeting at 9:00 AM.
If you've been around First Assembly Memphis, you've probably heard us talk about the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Maybe you've wondered what exactly that means, or why we make such a big deal about it. Let me walk you through this beautiful, powerful truth that sits at the heart of who we are as Pentecostal believers.

The Promise That Changed Everything
Let's rewind to the early days of the church. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave His followers a command that probably seemed impossible: go into all the world and be His witnesses. But He didn't leave them hanging. He promised them power, supernatural, Holy Spirit power, to accomplish what looked completely impossible.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." That promise wasn't just for the first disciples. It's for every believer, including you and me, right here in Memphis.

Promise of the Spirit (Quick Table)
Promise of the Spirit | Scripture | Result |
Power to be Christ’s witnesses | Acts 1:8 | Boldness and effectiveness to share Jesus |
The Spirit poured out for all believers | Acts 2:17–18 | Spirit-empowered life for men and women, young and old |
The promise is for you (and “all who are far off”) | Acts 2:39 | Access to God’s gift across generations and geography |
The Holy Spirit is a gift from the Father when we ask | Luke 11:13 | Confidence to seek God without fear or striving |
What Exactly Is Spirit Baptism?
Here's where we get into the theology, but I promise to keep it practical. According to the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, the doctrinal foundation we stand on, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience that follows salvation.
Let me break that down. When you accept Jesus as your Savior, you're born again. The Holy Spirit comes to live inside you at that moment. You're saved, forgiven, and part of God's family. That's wonderful and complete in terms of salvation.
But the baptism in the Holy Spirit is something different, it's an empowering experience that equips you for witness and service. Think of it like this: salvation is God doing something in you; Spirit baptism is God doing something through you.
The Biblical Pattern
The book of Acts gives us the clearest picture of this experience. On the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), 120 believers who already knew Jesus were gathered in Jerusalem, waiting for the promise. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit fell on them like a rushing wind, and they all began speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
This wasn't a one-time event. Throughout Acts, we see the same pattern repeated:
The Samaritans received the Spirit after Philip preached to them (Acts 8)
Paul received the Holy Spirit after his conversion on the Damascus road (Acts 9)
The Gentiles at Cornelius's house spoke in tongues when the Spirit fell (Acts 10)
The disciples at Ephesus spoke in tongues when Paul laid hands on them (Acts 19)
The consistent thread? When people were baptized in the Holy Spirit, there was an initial physical evidence: they spoke in other tongues.
Definition Block: Initial Physical Evidence
Initial Physical Evidence: In Assemblies of God teaching, this means the first outward sign that a believer has been baptized in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4). It’s evidence of the Spirit’s empowering work, not a measure of someone’s value or salvation.
Why Speaking in Tongues?
I know this can seem strange if you're new to it. Speaking in tongues, praying in a language you've never learned, given by the Holy Spirit, is the initial evidence that you've been baptized in the Spirit. It's not the only evidence, but it's the first one.
Why tongues? Because God chose it. It's a sign that something supernatural has happened, you're now connected to heaven's power source in a new way. It's personal prayer language, direct communication with God that bypasses your limited understanding.

The Purpose: Power to Witness
But here's what matters most: the baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't about having a mystical experience for its own sake. It's about empowerment. Jesus said you'd receive power to be His witnesses.
That power looks like:
Boldness to share your faith when you used to be timid
Supernatural gifts of the Spirit flowing through you to help others
Wisdom beyond your natural understanding
Strength to stand firm in spiritual battles
Compassion that drives you to reach the lost
When Peter, who denied Jesus three times out of fear, was baptized in the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, he stood up and preached with such anointing that 3,000 people got saved in one day. That's the kind of transformation we're talking about.
The 901 Connection
Right here in Memphis and Cordova, we've seen the baptism in the Holy Spirit transform lives for decades. At First Assembly Memphis, we've watched shy people become bold soul-winners. We've seen ordinary believers step into extraordinary ministry. We've witnessed the gifts of the Spirit operating to heal, encourage, and build up the body of Christ.
This isn't just historical doctrine we preserve in a museum. It's living, breathing reality in the 901. Every time someone receives the baptism in the Holy Spirit at our altars at 8650 Walnut Grove Road, we're seeing Acts chapter 2 replayed in real time.

How Do You Receive It?
If you're hungry for this experience, here's the good news: it's a gift, not something you earn. Jesus is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit (John 1:33), and He wants to give you this gift more than you want to receive it.
Here's what you do:
Ask. Jesus said, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13)
Believe. Trust that God wants to fill you and that He will.
Yield. Open your mouth and let the Spirit give you the words. Don't try to manufacture it or work it up, just surrender and let Him flow.
Receive. When you start to feel words bubbling up that aren't English, speak them out by faith.
Many people receive at the altar during worship or prayer. Others receive while praying alone at home. There's no formula, just a promise and a willing heart.
Living Spirit-Filled
Once you're baptized in the Holy Spirit, that's not the end, it's the beginning. Paul tells us to "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18), using a verb tense that means "keep on being filled." It's an ongoing lifestyle, not a one-time event.
Stay sensitive to the Spirit's leading. Pray in tongues regularly, it builds you up spiritually (1 Corinthians 14:4). Use the gifts He gives you to serve others. Stay in the Word, stay in prayer, stay connected to a Spirit-filled community like FA Memphis.

Our Pentecostal Heritage
We hold this doctrine precious because it's biblical, and because we've seen its fruit for over a century. The Assemblies of God was born out of a movement of believers who experienced this apostolic power and couldn't keep quiet about it. We're not content with just knowing about God, we want to know Him in power.
That doesn't make us better than other believers. It makes us responsible. Responsible to steward this gift well, to use it for witness and service, to point others to Jesus.
A Personal Invitation
If you've never experienced the baptism in the Holy Spirit, you're missing out on something Jesus specifically provided for you. Not because you're incomplete without it, your salvation is secure in Christ. But because there's a dimension of power, intimacy, and effectiveness in ministry that God wants you to walk in.
Don't let fear, misunderstanding, or skepticism rob you of this gift. Come expectant. Come hungry. Whether you're visiting us in person in Cordova, we'd love to pray with you and see you receive this promise.
The same Spirit that fell on the 120 in Jerusalem wants to fall on you right here, right now, in the 901 and beyond. That's the beauty of Pentecost, it's not limited by geography or time. The promise is for you, your children, and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God will call (Acts 2:39).
Are you ready to step into the fullness of what God has for you?
