What is God's Grace? (The Unmerited Favor of the Lord)

God’s grace is His unmerited favor, a generous, life-changing gift we could never earn on our own. It is the expression of His radical love and total forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ. While we often struggle to feel "good enough," grace reminds us that God chooses to bless us, empower us, and call us His own, not because of what we do, but because of who He is.
What the Bible Says About Grace
Before we dive into the "how" and "why," let’s look at what Scripture tells us about this incredible gift:
Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV): "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."
Romans 3:24 (NIV): "...and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV): "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'"
Titus 2:11 (NIV): "For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people."
Understanding the "Unmerited" Part
In our world, almost everything is transactional. If you work forty hours, you get a paycheck. If you study hard, you get the grade. If you treat people well, you expect to be treated well in return. We are conditioned to believe that we get what we deserve.
But God’s grace flips that script entirely.
The word "unmerited" simply means you didn't earn it, and you don't deserve it. In the original Greek, the word for grace is charis, which refers to a benevolent gift from a superior to an inferior. It’s a favor done for someone who has no claim to it.
When we talk about the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, specifically the salvation of man, we recognize that our only hope is through the shed blood of Jesus. We can't "do" enough good things to bridge the gap between our mistakes and a perfect God. Grace is the bridge God built from His side to ours.

Grace vs. Mercy: What’s the Difference?
People often use these two words interchangeably, but they are like two sides of the same coin.
Think of it this way:
Mercy is God not giving us what we deserve. We’ve all made mistakes; we’ve all fallen short. If we got exactly what we deserved for every wrong thought or action, we’d be in trouble. Mercy is God withholding that punishment.
Grace is God giving us what we don’t deserve. It’s not just the absence of a penalty; it’s the presence of a blessing. It’s being invited to the King’s table when we were once His enemies. It’s being called "son" or "daughter" when we felt like outcasts.
Mercy saves us from the pit; grace seats us on a throne.
The Gift That Cost Everything
While grace is free for us, it was incredibly expensive for God.
To offer us unmerited favor, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to live the perfect life we couldn't live and die the death we should have died. Because Jesus took the weight of our sin on the cross, God can now extend grace to us without compromising His justice.
This is why we say grace is a gift. You don’t pay for a birthday gift, if you did, it would be a purchase. You just open your hands and receive it. Faith is simply the act of opening your hands.

Grace for the "Now" (Not Just the "Then")
A common mistake is thinking that grace is only for the moment you first believe in Jesus, like a ticket to heaven that you put in your pocket and forget about.
But grace is much bigger than that.
At Boundless Online Church, we meet people from all walks of life, late-shift workers, family caregivers, and people searching for hope in the middle of a messy week. For them, and for you, grace is a daily fuel.
Grace is what gives you the strength to get back up when you fail. It’s what gives you the patience to care for a sick loved one when you’re exhausted. It’s the "sufficient" power Paul talked about in 2 Corinthians. God doesn't just save you by grace and then leave you to "figure it out" on your own. He sustains you by grace every single morning.
Breaking the Cycle of Performance
Are you tired?
Many of us spend our lives trying to prove we are worthy. We try to be the perfect parent, the most productive employee, or the "best" Christian. We carry a heavy backpack of guilt every time we mess up, assuming God is tapping His foot in disappointment.
Grace says: Stop.
You don't have to perform for a God who already loves you. When God looks at a believer, He doesn't see your list of failures; He sees the righteousness of His Son. This realization changes everything. It turns "I have to" into "I get to."
We don't follow God's word to get His love; we follow it because we already have His love. That is the freedom of the Gospel.

Is Grace a License to Sin?
Sometimes people ask, "If God is going to forgive me anyway because of grace, why should I bother trying to be good?"
The Apostle Paul actually answered this in the Bible. He basically said, "Absolutely not!" When you truly experience the radical, unmerited favor of someone who died for you, your heart changes. You don't want to keep doing the things that hurt Him or yourself.
Grace doesn't just forgive our past; it transforms our future. It trains us to say "no" to things that drain our life and "yes" to things that bring peace.
A Message for the Seekers and the Hurting
Maybe you’re reading this and you feel like you’ve gone too far. Maybe you think your past is too messy or your heart is too hard for God to care.
If that’s you, please hear this: Grace is specifically designed for people who don't deserve it. If you were perfect, you wouldn't need grace.
Whether you are watching our Sunday Sermons from a hospital bed or reading this on a break during a double shift, God’s favor is reaching out to you right where you are. There is no distance His grace cannot travel.

Encouragement for Your Journey
If you've been living under the weight of "not being enough," today is the day to set that burden down.
God’s grace is a fountain that never runs dry. It’s new every morning. You don't have to have all the answers. You don't have to have your life together. You just have to come to Him.
We invite you to join us in exploring these truths deeper. Whether it’s through our Clarion Call Bible Study or simply by reaching out for prayer, you don't have to walk this path alone.
Grace is calling your name. Will you receive it?
A Short Prayer for You
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your grace. Thank You that I don’t have to earn Your love or strive for Your approval. I admit that I need You. I receive Your forgiveness and Your favor today. Help me to walk in the freedom that grace provides and to show that same grace to the people around me. Fill me with Your Spirit and give me the strength for today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
