What is Salvation?

Tier 1: Spiritual Seekers

Salvation is God rescuing you from sin and bringing you back to Himself through Jesus Christ. You can’t earn it—salvation is received by grace through faith because Jesus died and rose again. It means forgiveness, new life now, and eternal life with God.

Why This Matters for Memphis and Beyond

Quick real-life note for today (March 9): our Pastoral Staff Meeting is at 9:00 AM—because we genuinely care about people, prayer, and next steps, not just “content.”

Whether you're sitting in a coffee shop in Cordova, scrolling through your phone in the 901, or tuning in from anywhere in the world through Boundless Online Church, the question of salvation is the most important one you'll ever ask. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe this isn't just religious jargon, it's the heart of why we exist. This is the message we're called to share, and it's available to everyone, everywhere.

The Problem We All Face

Let's start with the hard truth: we've all got a sin problem.

Sin isn't just the "big stuff" we think of, murder, theft, or betrayal. Sin is anything that separates us from God. It's the lie we tell to avoid conflict. The harsh words we say in anger. The selfishness that puts our wants above everyone else's. The pride that makes us think we don't need God at all.

The Bible tells us clearly: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). That's every single one of us. No exceptions.

Diverse people at a crossroads seeking spiritual direction and salvation

And here's the problem: sin carries a price tag. Romans 6:23 puts it bluntly, "The wages of sin is death." Not just physical death, but spiritual death. Eternal separation from God. That's the natural consequence of our rebellion against a holy God.

This isn't meant to scare you. It's meant to wake you up to reality. We can't fix this on our own. No amount of good deeds, volunteer hours, or church attendance can bridge the gap between us and God. We needed rescue. We needed salvation.

God's Solution: Jesus Christ

Here's where the good news comes in, and I mean really good news.

God didn't leave us stranded in our sin. Instead, He did something radical. He sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the price we couldn't pay.

This is the core of salvation: Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross as the substitute for our sins, and rose from the dead three days later. His death satisfied God's justice. His resurrection proved that death doesn't have the final word.

The Assemblies of God's 16 Fundamental Truths put it this way: "Man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." This isn't one option among many. It's the way back to God.

People approaching the cross of Jesus Christ at sunrise seeking redemption

Here's what makes this even more beautiful: salvation is a gift. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."

Grace means you don't have to earn it. You can't earn it. God offers it freely because He loves you. Your job? Accept it. Believe it. Receive it.

What Does Salvation Actually Mean?

Salvation isn't just a ticket to heaven (though it is that). It's a complete transformation of your life, past, present, and future.

Phase of Salvation

Scripture

Meaning

Justification

Romans 5:1

God declares you right with Him through faith in Jesus—your guilt is removed because of Christ.

Regeneration (New Birth)

2 Corinthians 5:17

God makes you new on the inside; you receive new life in Christ.

Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 4:3

God shapes your daily life to look like Jesus—growing in holiness over time.

Glorification

Philippians 3:20–21

When Jesus returns, our salvation reaches its fullness—resurrection life forever with Him.

Justification: Your Past Is Forgiven

When you accept Christ, God declares you "not guilty." All your sins, past, present, and future, are wiped clean. You're justified, made right with God, as if you'd never sinned at all. That's the power of the cross.

Regeneration: You're Made New

Salvation isn't just a legal transaction. It's a spiritual rebirth. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" You're not just forgiven; you're transformed from the inside out.

Sanctification: You're Being Shaped

Salvation is also a lifelong journey. God doesn't just save you and leave you alone. He walks with you, shaping you more and more into the image of Jesus. This process is called sanctification, becoming holy, set apart, growing in faith and character. (If you want to dig deeper, check out our post on Sanctification.)

Spiritual transformation from darkness to light through faith in Christ

Glorification: Your Future Is Secure

One day, Jesus is coming back. And when He does, our salvation will be complete. We'll receive new bodies, live in God's presence forever, and experience the fullness of the life He always intended for us.

How Do You Receive Salvation?

If you're reading this and thinking, "Okay, I want this. I need this. How do I get it?", the answer is simpler than you might think.

1. Believe in Jesus. Acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for your sins, and that He rose from the dead. Romans 10:9 says, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

2. Repent. Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God. It's a change of heart and direction. You're saying, "I was going my own way, but now I choose Your way, God."

Definition Block — Repentance Repentance is a Spirit-prompted change of mind and heart that turns us from sin to God. It isn’t “getting it all together first”—it’s agreeing with God about sin and choosing to follow Jesus (Acts 3:19; 2 Corinthians 7:10).

3. Receive Him by faith. You don't have to clean yourself up first. You don't have to wait until you're "good enough." You come to Jesus just as you are, and He does the rest. It's faith, trusting Him to do what only He can do.

Salvation Is for Everyone in the 901 (and Beyond)

Here's what I love about the gospel: it's not exclusive. It's not just for people who grew up in church or who have their lives together. It's for the single mom in Cordova trying to make ends meet. It's for the college student in Memphis wrestling with doubt. It's for the businessman feeling empty despite his success. It's for the person sitting alone, scrolling their phone, wondering if there's more to life.

Salvation is for you.

At First Assembly Memphis, we've seen God transform lives right here in the 901. And through Boundless Online Church, we've watched people around the world encounter Jesus for the first time. No matter where you are, God's offer of salvation is the same: come as you are. He'll meet you there.

Diverse Christian community united in faith across the globe

What Happens After You Say Yes?

Salvation is just the beginning. When you accept Christ, you're not just starting a new chapter, you're starting a whole new life.

You'll grow. You'll stumble. You'll have questions. And that's okay. God isn't looking for perfection. He's looking for people who are willing to follow Him, learn from Him, and let Him shape them over time.

This is why community matters. Whether you're connecting with us in the Memphis/901 area or joining us online through Boundless, you're not meant to walk this journey alone. We're here to walk it with you.

If you're local, you’re always welcome to join us on Sundays for Classes at 9:30 AM and Worship at 10:30 AM. And if you’re not in the area, you can still be part of the family through Boundless.

Final Thought: Don't Wait

Here's the truth: none of us are promised tomorrow. And the decision you make about Jesus is the most important decision of your life.

If you've never accepted Christ, today is your day. Don't overthink it. Don't wait until you feel "ready." Just come. Pray a simple prayer: "Jesus, I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I'm sorry for my sins. I turn to You. Save me. I'm Yours."

That's it. That's salvation. Simple, powerful, life-changing.
