What Is Sin in the Bible?

Sin is any thought, word, or action that falls short of God's perfect holiness. It's described in Scripture as missing the mark (hamartia), rebellion against God (pasha), and inner crookedness (awon). Sin separates us from God, but Jesus Christ provides the complete solution through His grace, forgiveness, and sacrifice on the cross.

This article explains what sin is, why it matters, how Scripture describes it, and why Jesus is the only true answer for our guilt, separation, and need for righteousness before God.

Scripture and Insight

Hamartia: Missing the Mark

Hamartia is the main Greek word for sin in the New Testament. It carries the idea of missing the mark, like an arrow that does not hit its target. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Sin is not only breaking rules. It is falling short of the life, holiness, and glory we were created to reflect.

This matters because sin is universal. No one stands before God on personal goodness. Every person needs mercy. Every person needs a Savior. The ground is level at the foot of the cross.

Pasha: Rebellion Against God

Pasha is a Hebrew word often connected to transgression or rebellion. It shows sin as more than weakness. It is resistance to God's authority. It is the human heart saying, "I want my way over Yours."

Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Sin earns a real consequence. Left alone, it leads to spiritual death and separation from God. But the same verse gives hope. God offers eternal life as a gift through Jesus Christ.

Awon: Inner Crookedness

Awon is a Hebrew word that points to iniquity, bentness, or inner crookedness. It describes the twisted condition inside us that produces sinful actions on the outside. We do not simply commit sin. Apart from Christ, sin has affected the human heart deeply.

1 John 1:8-10 says, "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." Scripture calls us to honesty. We are not healed by denial. We are healed by confession and grace.

Jesus Is the Divine Exchange

The good news of the gospel is not that we fix ourselves and then come to God. The good news is that Jesus came for sinners. He took our sin so we could receive His righteousness. On the cross, Christ bore the penalty we deserved. In His resurrection, He opened the way for forgiveness, new life, and restored relationship with God.

This is the divine exchange. Jesus took our guilt, shame, rebellion, and crookedness on Himself. In return, those who trust Him receive pardon, cleansing, and right standing before God. We do not save ourselves by effort. We are rescued by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Father, please search my heart and show me what is true. Reveal my sin honestly, not to crush me, but to bring me into Your healing light. I confess that I have fallen short and gone my own way. Thank You that Jesus took my sin on the cross so I could be forgiven and made new. Help me receive Your mercy fully and walk in the freedom of Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

FAQ

What is the unpardonable sin?

The unpardonable sin is commonly understood as a hardened, ongoing rejection of the Holy Spirit's witness to Jesus. It is not a one-time failure by a tender-hearted believer. If you are grieved over sin and want God's mercy, that is a strong sign your heart is still responding to Him.

Is there a difference between sin and sins?

Yes. "Sin" can refer to the inner fallen condition of humanity, while "sins" usually refers to the specific wrong actions we commit. The gospel addresses both. Jesus forgives our sins and also breaks the power of sin over our lives.

How can I forgive myself if God has forgiven me?

Start by agreeing with God more than your shame. If God has forgiven you through Christ, holding yourself hostage does not honor Him. Healing often takes time, but peace grows as you receive God's verdict over your own feelings and keep bringing your heart back to His grace.

Are some sins worse than others?

All sin is serious because all sin opposes a holy God. At the same time, Scripture shows that some sins bring greater earthly damage, deeper consequences, and heavier accountability. We should never minimize any sin, but we should also recognize that not every sin carries the same impact in human life.

Can I still go to heaven if I keep sinning after becoming a Christian?

Christians still struggle with sin, but ongoing sin should never be treated casually. Salvation is rooted in Jesus, not in flawless performance. At the same time, genuine faith leads to repentance, growth, and a real desire to obey God. Believers stumble, but they do not make peace with sin as their master.
