What Is the Assemblies of God? A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Pentecostal Faith

The Assemblies of God is a Spirit-filled, Bible-centered Christian fellowship within the Pentecostal tradition. It emphasizes the authority of Scripture, salvation through Jesus Christ, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, divine healing, and a mission to reach all people with the Gospel.

Have you ever walked into a church and felt a sense of energy you couldn't quite name? Maybe it was the way people prayed with their whole hearts, the expectation that God was actually listening, or the belief that miracles aren't just things that happened two thousand years ago. In neighborhoods from Cordova to Bartlett and Arlington, people are looking for a faith that is both ancient and alive. That’s where the Assemblies of God (AG) comes in.

The AG isn't just a denomination; it’s a global movement of more than 70 million people who believe the Holy Spirit is just as active today as He was in the book of Acts. Whether you’re sitting at a dinner table in Shelby County or watching a service online from the other side of the world, understanding the AG is about understanding a faith that moves.

The Growth of a Movement: By the Numbers

The Pentecostal movement is currently the fastest-growing major stream of Christianity in the world.

  • Global Reach: Over 70 million adherents worldwide.

  • Local Impact: In the 901, First Assembly Memphis has been a lighthouse for decades, supporting families and strengthening the community.

  • Diversity: The AG is one of the most multi-ethnic denominations in the United States, reflecting the beautiful diversity of God's Kingdom.

The 4 Cardinal Doctrines

While the Assemblies of God holds to 16 Fundamental Truths, there are four "Cardinal Doctrines" that serve as the pillars of our faith. These are the core beliefs you’ll hear woven through every sermon and Life Group discussion at First Assembly Memphis.

  1. Salvation: The belief that every person can be restored to a relationship with God through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

  2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: An experience following salvation that empowers believers for Christian living and effective witness.

  3. Divine Healing: The conviction that physical healing is provided for in Christ’s atonement and is available today through prayer.

  4. The Second Coming: The "Blessed Hope" that Jesus Christ will return to earth to gather His followers and establish His eternal Kingdom.

Key Definitions for Your Faith Journey

Salvation: The act of being saved from the power and penalty of sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a free gift received by grace through faith. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A distinct spiritual experience where the believer is filled with the Holy Spirit, often accompanied by the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues, as seen in the New Testament. Sanctification: An ongoing process where the Holy Spirit works in a believer's life to make them more like Jesus in character and action.

Why Does the Holy Spirit Matter Today?

For families in Arlington or Bartlett trying to navigate the stresses of 2026, the Holy Spirit isn't an abstract concept. We believe the Spirit provides "power for living." This means strength to overcome addiction, wisdom for parenting, peace during anxiety, and the courage to serve our city.

At First Assembly Memphis, we focus on helping you build a "war room" for your family, a place of prayer where you can fight spiritual battles and win. We believe the Bible is the living Word of God, and it alone can help you navigate the culture we live in today.

Strengthening the Family Unit

One of our primary missions is to strengthen families. From our First Assembly Christian School (FACS) to our Wednesday night ministry services, we are committed to passing on a vibrant faith to the next generation. We refuse to pass on a version of faith that is nothing but "burnt ashes." Instead, we want our kids in Bartlett, Cordova, and beyond to know that God has a personal plan for their lives.
