What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? Evidence and Purpose

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct, vital experience for believers following salvation, providing spiritual power for Christian living and effective witnessing. According to the Bible and the Assemblies of God Fundamental Truths, this gift is available to all Christians. It is characterized by the initial physical evidence of speaking in tongues and results in a deeper passion for God and His mission.

Bible Verses to Study

Acts 1:8 (NIV) "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Acts 2:4 (NIV) "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

Acts 2:38-39 (NIV) "Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off: for all whom the Lord our God will call.'"

Joel 2:28 (NIV) "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions."

Luke 24:49 (NIV) "I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

Understanding the Gift

When we talk about the "Baptism in the Holy Spirit," we are talking about a beautiful, empowering gift from God the Father. At Boundless Online Church, we believe this isn't just a historical event that happened 2,000 years ago: it’s a living reality available to you today.

To understand what this means, it helps to look at the 16 Fundamental Truths. Specifically, Truths #7 and #8 explain that this experience is meant for all believers. It is distinct from and follows the experience of the "new birth" (salvation).

Think of it this way: salvation is like having a well of water within you for your own survival and life. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is like that well becoming an overflowing river that touches everyone around you. It is an immersion into the presence and power of God.

The Purpose: Why Do We Need It?

You might wonder, "If I’m already saved, why do I need another experience?" The answer is found in the word power.

In the book of Acts, Jesus told His followers to wait for this gift before they went out to change the world. He knew that living the Christian life and sharing the Gospel in a difficult world required more than just human effort. We need supernatural "oomph."

The primary purposes of this baptism include:

  1. Empowerment for Witnessing: The Spirit gives us a boldness to share our faith. Whether you are a shift worker talking to a colleague at 3:00 AM or a parent teaching your children, the Spirit helps your words carry weight.

  2. A Deeper Prayer Life: It opens up new dimensions in how we communicate with God.

  3. Increased Love for Others: This experience often results in a heightened "burden" or compassion for those who don’t know Jesus yet.

  4. Spiritual Gifts: It serves as the entrance into a life where the gifts of the Spirit (like healing, wisdom, and prophecy) become active.

Whether you are watching our Sunday Sermons from a hospital bed or a quiet living room, this power is what connects our digital community to the heartbeat of God’s mission.

The Evidence: Speaking in Tongues

One of the most common questions we receive is about the "evidence" of this baptism. Based on the patterns we see in the New Testament (Acts 2:4, 10:44-46, 19:6), we believe the "initial physical sign" of being baptized in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

This isn't something to be afraid of or overwhelmed by. It is a gift of a prayer language. It’s the Spirit helping us pray when we don’t have the right human words. While the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace) shows our character, the baptism in the Spirit provides the power for our calling.

How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The good news is that you don’t have to "earn" this. It is a gift. Here is how you can approach God to receive:

1. Ask in Faith Jesus said, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13). Simply ask Him.

2. Repent and Be Clean The Spirit is holy. Ensure your heart is right with God. If you’ve been struggling, you can always visit our Prayer Wall to share your heart with the community.

3. Yield and Receive Often, we try too hard. Receiving the Spirit is about yielding. As you pray, begin to praise God. When you feel the Holy Spirit moving, speak out the sounds and words He gives you, trusting that He is the one prompting your spirit.

4. Wait and Expect Sometimes it happens instantly. Sometimes it happens during a time of quiet waiting. Whether you are at home, in a Bible Study, or even just driving to work, keep your heart open.

A Global Promise for Everyone

At Boundless Online Church, we know our community is diverse. Some of you are in parts of the world where you can't attend a physical church safely. Others work late shifts and find it hard to connect during "normal" hours.

The beauty of the Holy Spirit is that He isn't limited by geography or time zones. You can be baptized in the Holy Spirit in your kitchen, in a breakroom, or in a hospital room. This promise is for all who are far off: both geographically and spiritually.

If you have questions about this or want to dive deeper into what the Bible says about a Spirit-led life, we invite you to join our Bible Study Club. It’s a great place to ask questions in a welcoming environment.
