What is the 'Blessed Hope'? A Look at the Rapture and Christ's Return?

Updated: May 13

The Blessed Hope is the joyful assurance and biblical promise that Jesus Christ will return to gather His Church. It specifically refers to the Rapture, where believers, both those who have died and those currently living, will be caught up together to meet the Lord in the air.

Living with Anticipation in the 901

In the middle of the daily grind, whether you are navigating traffic on Germantown Parkway or enjoying a quiet morning in Cordova, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the weight of the world. We see headlines that cause anxiety and experience personal trials that test our resolve. Yet, for the follower of Christ, there is a distinct rhythm of life that transcends the current moment. This rhythm is fueled by what the Bible calls the Blessed Hope.

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe this hope isn't just a theological concept for the distant future; it is a practical reality that changes how we live, love, and serve our neighbors in the 901 today. It provides a foundation of peace in an unstable world, reminding us that our story does not end with the struggles we see around us.

Definition Blocks

The Rapture: Derived from the Latin rapturo, meaning "caught up." It refers to the event described in 1 Thessalonians 4 where Christ returns in the clouds to gather His followers. The Blessed Hope: The specific term used in Titus 2:13 to describe the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ. It represents the ultimate expectation of the Christian faith. Imminence: The biblical doctrine that the return of Christ could happen at any moment. There are no remaining signs that must occur before the Rapture takes place.

The Biblical Foundation: Our 16 Fundamental Truths

As part of the Assemblies of God, our understanding of the end times is rooted deeply in the authority of Scripture. The "Blessed Hope" is actually the 13th of our 16 Fundamental Truths. We believe that the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the Church.

1. The Resurrection of the Dead

The Bible teaches that for those who have died in Christ, the grave is not the end. When the "trumpet of God" sounds, the bodies of believers who have passed away will be raised in an incorruptible state. This is a promise of total restoration.

2. The Transformation of the Living

Following the resurrection of the dead, those who are still alive at the time of Christ’s appearing will be changed "in the twinkling of an eye." We will receive glorified bodies, free from the sickness, pain, and limitations we experience in this life.

3. The Meeting in the Air

Unlike the Second Coming, where Christ returns to the earth to establish His millennial kingdom, the Rapture is an event where Jesus meets His people in the clouds. We are "caught up" to be with Him forever.

Why Does the Rapture Matter Today?

It is common to hear people talk about the "end of the world" with fear. However, for the believer, the return of Christ is not a source of terror, but a source of profound comfort. Understanding the Blessed Hope provides three specific solutions to the challenges of modern life in Memphis:

  1. A Solution for Grief: When we lose loved ones who knew the Lord, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. We know that a reunion is coming. The Blessed Hope tells us that "goodbye" is only "see you later."

  2. A Solution for Urgency: Knowing that Jesus could return at any moment gives us a healthy "holy urgency." It motivates us to share the Gospel with our friends, family, and coworkers in the 901. If you've been wondering What on Earth you are here for, this is it: to lead others to the saving grace of Jesus.

  3. A Solution for Holiness: Titus 2:11-13 reminds us that the grace of God teaches us to say "no" to ungodliness and to live self-controlled, upright lives while we wait for the Blessed Hope. The expectation of His return purifies our character.

Common Misconceptions

There is often confusion surrounding these events. Let’s clarify a few common questions:

  • Is the Rapture the same as the Second Coming? While they are related, we view them in two phases. The Rapture is when Christ comes for His saints (the Church). The Second Coming is His visible return to earth with His saints to establish His reign.

  • Do I have to be perfect to be "caught up"? Salvation is by grace through faith. It is not about reaching a level of "perfection," but about having a genuine, living relationship with Jesus Christ as your Savior.

  • Is it just about escaping the world? Not at all. The Blessed Hope should make us the most engaged people in our community. Because we know the ending, we can work for the good of Memphis with more courage and less fear.
