Why a Daily "Morning, Midday, and Evening" Faith Routine Will Change the Way You Parent

Let’s be honest: parenting is loud. Between the frantic search for matching socks, the midday snack-time negotiations, and the final bedtime "I need one more glass of water" stall, it often feels like we are just trying to keep our heads above water. We want our kids to know Jesus, but finding the time to sit down for a "serious" Bible study feels nearly impossible when the laundry is screaming for attention.
But what if discipleship wasn't about adding one more big task to your to-do list? What if it was about a rhythm: a natural heartbeat that flows through the morning, the middle of the day, and the quiet moments before sleep?
In Deuteronomy 6:7, God gave us a beautiful blueprint for this: "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."
This isn't a command to be a theologian; it’s an invitation to be a presence. By creating a morning, midday, and evening faith routine, you aren't just teaching facts about God. You are showing your children that Jesus is part of every single second of their lives.
Morning: Orientation and Wonder
The morning is about setting the compass. Before the world starts telling our kids who they should be, we have the chance to tell them who God is. It doesn't have to be long. It can happen over a bowl of cereal or in the car on the way to school.
Morning Mercy: A Family Devotional Scripture: Lamentations 3:22–23 Think about the sunrise. Every morning, the sun shows up, even if it’s behind the clouds. God’s love is exactly like that. It’s new every single day. No matter what happened yesterday: if you were grumpy or made a mistake: today is a fresh start. Prayer: Jesus, thank You for this new day. Help us to see Your love in everything we do today.
Segment A: The Sun's Big Hello (Ages 3–6) Little Leo rubbed his eyes and looked out the window. A tiny sliver of gold was peeking over the trees. "Mommy! The sun is awake!" Leo shouted. His mom sat on the edge of his bed and gave him a big squeeze. "It sure is, Leo. And do you know what else? God is awake, too. He stayed awake all night watching over you while you slept, and He is so happy to walk with you today." Leo smiled. If God was awake and the sun was awake, then Leo was ready for anything.

Midday: Integration and Strength
Midday is where the "real life" happens. This is the "walking by the way" part of Deuteronomy 6. It’s when friendships get tricky, schoolwork gets hard, or we just feel a little tired. This is the perfect time to remind our kids that the Holy Spirit is our Helper, right in the thick of it.
Midday Might: A Family Devotional Scripture: John 14:26 When things get tough at school or on the playground, remember that you aren't alone. Jesus promised us a Helper: the Holy Spirit. He is like a quiet whisper in your heart that reminds you to be kind, gives you courage to tell the truth, and helps you keep going when you want to quit. Ask: What is one thing you need help with this afternoon?
Segment B: The Sandcastle Bridge (Ages 7–9) Maya was frustrated. She had spent all recess building a perfect sandcastle, but then her brother, Sam, accidentally stepped on the front tower. Maya wanted to yell. She felt the heat rising in her face. But then she remembered the story they talked about at breakfast. God gives us grace. She took a deep breath. "It’s okay, Sam," she said, her voice a little shaky but kind. "Let’s build a bridge where the tower was." Sam’s eyes went wide. He expected a fight, but he got a friend instead. That bridge became the strongest part of the whole castle.

Evening: Reflection and Rest
Evening is the time to gather the pieces of the day and lay them at the feet of Jesus. It’s about reassurances. As the house gets quiet, we help our children process their fears and their joys, teaching them that they can rest because God never sleeps.
Evening Peace: A Family Devotional Scripture: Psalm 4:8 Close your eyes and listen to your breathing. In and out. God is the one who gives us every breath. As we get ready for sleep, we can let go of all the worries from today. We can say "thank You" for the good parts and "I’m sorry" for the bad parts. We are safe in His hands. Prayer: Lord, thank You for holding our family today. We trust You with our sleep and our tomorrow.
Segment C: The Quiet Heart (Ages 10–12) Chloe sat at her desk, staring at her journal. It had been a long day of tests and social drama. Sometimes she felt like she had to be perfect to fit in. She opened her Bible to a verse her dad had circled: "You are fearfully and wonderfully made." In the quiet of her room, away from the noise of the hallways, Chloe realized she didn't have to perform for God. She was His daughter, and that was enough. She wrote one sentence in her journal before turning off the lamp: I am loved because He is good, not because I am perfect.

The Foundation: Truths to Build a Life On
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that family discipleship is built on a solid foundation. These aren't just ideas; they are the truths that hold us together. Based on the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, here is a simplified guide you can share with your kids:
The Bible is God’s Voice: It is the map that shows us how to live and who God is.
One God, Three Persons: We have God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are all one, and they all love us.
Jesus is Our Hero: He lived a perfect life, died for our sins, and rose again so we can be friends with God.
The Holy Spirit is Our Power: He lives in us to help us grow and tell others about Jesus.
We Are a Family: The Church isn't just a building; it’s all of us following Jesus together.
Jesus is Coming Back: One day, Jesus will return to make everything right, and we will live with Him forever.

5 Simple Ways to Start Your Routine Today
You don't have to change everything overnight. Start small. Here are a few "life hacks" for busy families:
The Cereal Scripture: Stick a Bible verse on the milk carton or the cereal box. Read it aloud while they eat.
Red Light Prayers: Whenever you hit a red light in the car, say a one-sentence prayer for someone who needs it.
Lunchbox Love Notes: Put a small note in their lunchbox with a truth like, "God is with you today!"
Gratitude Rounds: At dinner, have everyone share one thing they are thankful for from their day.
Blessing at the Door: As your kids head up to bed, place a hand on their shoulder and say, "May the Lord bless you and keep you tonight."
The Long Game of Faith
Parenting with a daily faith rhythm isn't about being a perfect parent; it’s about pointing to a perfect Savior. When we make morning, midday, and evening moments a priority, we are building a legacy. We are telling our children that faith isn't a Sunday-only activity: it’s the air we breathe.
At First Assembly Memphis, we see families every week who are taking these small steps, and we want to walk with you, too. You don't have to do this alone. Whether you are in Memphis or joining us from across the world through Boundless Online Church, there is a place for your family here.
Discipleship happens in the laundry, in the car, and at the kitchen table. It’s messy, it’s beautiful, and it’s exactly where Jesus wants to meet you.
